I dont know about this camera. The "bokeh" is digitally or what? What I do know is that each of my lens delivers different quality of bokeh. If this tech can re-focus on a images taken with a dslr and still able to bring out the bokeh of the lens when changing focus, it would be great. If not, its just a consumer camera.
"it's very comparable to an iphone." what the fuck? no it's not. the only thing similar about the lytro and iphone camera is the fact that they're cameras. that's it. you have a 3D "living" picture versus a 2D "flat" picture amongst many other differences. these guys suck.
@sqjam I am sorry you feel that way. The whole point of Photography is to be creative. Not just "Snapping" pictures. Plus: this camera is being marketed heavily to professional photographer's who understand photography. This Tech is cool for people who just want to "Snap" pictures yes. But for the people that it is being marketed to; it is junk and after looking at the raw pictures produced from this Camera, I am almost in tears. My iPhone can produce better pictures in my opinion.
@entouchgraphics Obviously, if you were a true "professional photographer", you wouldn't sound so full of yourself, you'd be using Hasselblad as opposed to shitty Nikon's and you WOULDN'T be using an iPhone as a photographic comparison...you moron! You'd also know that it doesn't shoot in RAW, if you actually did see real photos out of the camera. You're just talking out of your ass. Go play on the freeway.
@DarkPhalanx You have no clue what you are talking about, Hasselblad cameras are great, but for Portrait work. I am mostly an event photographer and need the speed of Nikon... and true "Professional Photographer" would have the view that, you choose the best tool for the Job. When I said "Raw" I did not mean as in the Raw format, I meant "Un-Edited" as in "Raw from the Camera", These pictures are readily available to anyone, go to the Lytro website.
This is a beta version prototype .. Im sure there will be a zillion other features added to this product once it becomes popular and customers start demanding.
I'd wait and see what happens instead of swinging right away.
This is the future tech we might see in the iOS devises very soon, I'm pretty sure apple has already put them in the radar to implement these tech in their devises. That'd be something else
@danielsun55 Even with one eye, we still have the ability to determine parallax, and that's all that the Lytro camera is doing (test this by closing one eye and looking at different objects; your eye still focuses on each one)
@5random1 I'd say video in 2013. I don't understand what you are talking about when you say re-focusing DOF, you can't do that with regular video data.
Sad to see a promising technology in the hands of people who don't even understand what they have. Either the 2 guys were nervous, or just completely in over their heads. The inventor (Ng) needs to surround himself with savvy business people. Unfortunately for every genius like Ng, there's a million business leeches looking to hang onto the coattails of others. BTW the interviewer is rude, obnoxious, and doesn't deserve answers to his stupid questions. Ng was disrespected by this crap video.
the CEO doesn't know how close it can focus? thats an epic fail, they couldn't answer the biggest image resolution. the product seems cool, but it looks like the company will fail
So cool! The fun part (demo of changing focus) starts around 17:00. Because of reflection on the screen, it is a bit hard to see refocus changing, but it does!
@jmez927 Since it doesn't have a focus point it doesn't matter what the shutter speed is. After you take the picture you can focus on whatever part of the action shot you want and it will be crystal clear. So it's actually probably perfect for action shots.
Ok, let´s forget that 1 Megapixel gap... How about making ONE sharp image??? To "refocus" a blurred image to another blurred image is something I never wanted, even with 1 Megapixel quality...

is $399 camera only or software included?
does included software is enough?
or do we have to splash more money for better software?

Cool Tech but in the end, it's still just a point and shoot camera that's being sold for $500. Seriously? That's an iPad 2 right there.

@DarkPhalanx And the web compression may make them look worse than they are, but as of now, this is not something that I would want.

3D pictures are just a gimmick. However, it looks like great technology that could be brought to a point where they become the next standard.

Cool stuff.
Agree with other poster that the first two needs to learn a lot more about the camera.
"Comparable to the iphone"? Recommend he comes up with a better response next time.
Will likely wait for v2. :-) Interviewer knows his stuff. How hard would it have been to add a screw hole for a tripod?

This is freaking brilliant.
- new file format
- new measurement
- 2 buttons
- plays in modern browsers
- images uploaded to Facebook are interactive (tested last night)
I really think people need to see the full effects to appreciate the results.
