Love this song! I remember the SNL epi--someone needs to post it here. I have seen JT many times--so great live. He will be touring with his son Ben this winter/spring. Some tickets went on on pre-sale today (mostly mid-west markets) Hopefully, there will be some east coast dates before JT plays Carnegie Hall in April/May
On the original version of "Sweet Potato Pie", James sang the song all by himself. Arnold McCuller and Rosemary Butler (the backups here) didn't back him up.
Great performance... This one wasn't included on the VHS release in 1991 along with Angry Blues, The Twist & Song For You Far Away. In this concert Dan Dugmore & Bob Mann switch off on lead guitar. Dugmore also plays steel guitar.
I believe the female singer is Rosemary Butler who sang in Jackson Browne's band for a song time. If I'm not mistaken, Rosemary sang the female vocal in JB's version of "Stay."
Ok I'm 23 years old, I know of james taylor but I don't really know his music, I just so happned to be watching one of those old reruns of saturday nght lives from the 80s on comedy central and i saw james taylor performing this song with these two individuals and have been looking for it scince then, im glad i found this
I've been looking everywhere for a clip of JT's performance of this song on SNL. I saw it in rerun and have been unable to find it since. It was definitely his best performance of the song.
I LOVE that version of the song. I actually heard the duet first, and then discovered James Taylor some months later. I would also like to see a video of that, but there's a pretty good chance it wasn't ever performed live.. sadly :(
I saw this show in Indianpolis when I was about 12 Years old. James pointed at me at one point, leaving the stadium. I don't hink my parents realize how important this was to my little heart.
Thank you very much for honoring my request as well as for acknowledging me in the description! I actually used to have this special taped from WGBH Channel 2 in Boston when it aired back in '88 & I have been dying to see it ever since. Could you also post "Only One"? That's another one of my favorites as well as one of my father's favorites. Between you & me, though, after being the world's youngest JT fan(I have loved his stuff since age 3), it is tough to pick a favorite song of his!
Thanks for sharing this video! This tune has a really nice groove, and JT works it, as usual.

@TheBradBakerSet That's Leyland Sklar and he is probably the best bass player today.

I guess this isn't one of James' favorite songs seeing as how he doesn't perform it live anymore.

I recorded the show when it was on BBCtv in 1989. Just flicking channels and fell on it.
Wonderful!
The basist is Leland Sklar, two guitarists are Dan Dugmore and ???? HELP!

"I'm the fella that she loves the most/Main reason why she left the coast" That's Arnold McCuller doing that solo.

Great video, love it. Thank you for posting it. I am surprised this hasn't been released to DVD.
The man makes me melt.
Not that it matters, but I don't think he looks awkward or uncomfortable, but that's just MHO.

THis was an Adult COntemporary hit in 1988 around the time this concert was done, and the Never Die Young album came out.
