@Inferno350 Sure, the public might be able to swallow MARIJUANA as of now.. and maybe on a strategic level your'e correct..
But how about ectasy? How about shrooms? DMT etc..
Things that can be enjoyed in MODERATION
Also, there have been instances where people have been addicted to heroine/cocaine and have been functioning. Just they needed a high paying job in order to do it..
So newt denies there are things called FUNCTIONING addicts.
@thefakeyeti Yeah, Newt's position is wrong in all sorts of places. I'm on SSDP's side on this issue. Functioning or not, we shouldn't criminalize people who are taking health risks. Prohibition just makes things worse for them and for others. I was merely commenting on the fact that if you're approaching a politician who has maybe 1 min to answer your question, you should narrow your focus and be very careful how and what you ask.
Who really cares with a monumental sociopathic asshole like Gingrich thinks? Thankfully he's been dragging far behind in the last few weeks, and hopefully that trend will continue... but even if he made a major comeback and won the election, his entire political career is clear evidence that his loyalty lies with whomever pays him the most.
The gentleman asked the question nicely, yet spent too much time prefacing it (versus getting to the meat and potatoes of drug policy that is marijuana prohibition). 20 million marijuana arrests, nearly a trillion dollars spent on the War on Drugs, and continued high rates of incarceration in American prisons of non-violent drug offenders. I know, it's easy to play armchair QB, but SSDP needs to get its message out more...Obama Admin. has sold out & ignored a sensible policy approach.
@hwkstr1 Partly true, I just replied to another video regarding the same issue these guys are having. These politicians are wordsmiths and the structure of your questions and the wording is of the UTMOST importance if you want to truly catch them in a lie or dodge. You let Newt control your question and he answered it how he wanted to. You allowed him to do it. Be prepared or be owned, you guys got pwnd. Sorry but it's true. GL
i wouldn't say he dodged the question, he just gave a really dumb answer. imagine that psa: if you use drugs you will lose your independence.

we need to prohibit cheeseburgers since there are so many useless fat people in this country

Are alcoholics capable of independent judgement? Maybe we should prohibit that too since it causes citizens to not participate in society.

The SSDPer should have worded it as "liberty to use cannabis" not drugs because that opens the scope of the issue drastically.

@Inferno350 I agree that would have been a much better way to phrase the question
