  • This absolutely scared the sh*t out of me when I saw it as a kid.

  • A teacher showed this to us in high school. It was very influential on me, cinematically and politically. I hadn't watched it in at least 20 years, but it still holds up beautifully.

  • @jj1035 Im gonna take a guess and say it was a story with a lesson. Onto more pressing questions - Whats W/You Capitalizing Every Word?

  • just gotta love the 50's....

  • this short was kinda disturbing at the part where the guys killed each other's families

  • This is a good example of why solving anything in general through violence is stupid. This is also a good example of why I'm a pacifist.

  • the newspaper headlines read "Peace certain if no war" and "War certain if no peace"

  • Did anyone else interpret this as an analogy for the Korean War or the Cold War in general?

  • wow,, thanks a billion for posting this rare and magical art.

  • ...What did I just watch?

  • the sounds in this are some of the first uses of "8-bit" scoring. predating even the synthesizer

  • @Infragreen294 McLaren created the soundtrack of the film by scratching the edge of the film, creating various blobs, lines, and triangles which the projector read as sound - wikipedia

  • I remember seeing this film in school when I was a young child, and boy, it SCARED me!!! The ending haunted me for the most of my life, lol. I could never understand why my teacher thought it was such a good film to show to small kids!! X_X (BTW, I did not remember the part with mothers and babies being killed....I guess I saw the version with that part cut out.)

  • @Duskypuss I too saw this film in school in 1968 as a six year old and had the same reaction. It was indeed memorable, and the part where the families were killed was left out as well.

  • Did i just watch a baby being body slammed and drop kicked??? hahaha

  • This film is registered at UNESCO's Memory of the World as one of 193 documents representing our common human heritage.

  • I haven't seen this since my Cinema Studies class!

  • My teacher showed us this in class as an example of pixleation animation...omg we we loved it so many different reactions to this video XD I love so much

  • in reality this summed down human nature how they fight & start wars over the stupidest shit, why dont we all come together as one & start a one world launguage & government! oh wait that will happen but not invented by man but lucifer with his fallen angels from the real world which they exist & not the super advanced computer program that we all exist in.........)=

  • Es una critica a la guerra.

  • Ama a tu prójimo!

  • they shoulda just got high instead

  • We watched this in film class about a week ago. Norman McLaren was pretty musically inclined and it's true that he didn't use any type of musical instrumentation when making the sound affects, he really did 'etch' the sound right onto the film, pretty brilliant!

  • this short also teaches you not to go to war over silly things

  • @SpyMaster356 also? thats kinda the main point

  • We watched this in film class :) <3 It was the only one that all the narrow-minded people liked. Thank you very much Mr. McLaren ^_^

  • This teaches a very interesting lesson to everyone ,to love your neighbor

  • How did they make such electronic noises back then?

  • @H057IL3

The synthesizer was actually invented back then, also its possible he may have used devices like the Theramin or electronic radio signals

  • @Dragonstorm787

Makes sense, but as far as I know (I Wikipedia'ed "Neighbours" after watching this), he literally scratched the film in certain areas to create the effects.

  • @H057IL3 he had a machine that converted scratches and little paint spots in the film to little electronic noises...

  • @Toyovision

That's what I thought, but without the machine.

  • I only watched this vid because an Extreme music video was based on it.

  • The scene where they beat each others wife and child was originally disallowed to be shown to American audiences, so it was destroyed. Later in the 60's, however, it was requested to be shown again with that scene in it, so they had to dig up an older, lower quality copy. Hence the lowered quality of that scene in this film.

  • this is a perfect representation of many situations in life. fenomenal.

  • I don't think there's tobacco in those pipes.

  • WOW ...a great lesson that unfortunately many haven't acknowledged nor applied it yet.

  • why won't people

    listen?

  • Awesome. Haven't seen this film for over 10 years! The sound is truly remarkable.. it was done by drawing on the optical soundtrack as I remember.

  • Awesome. Haven't seen this film for over 10 years! The soundtrack is truly remarkable..

  • @m1up You also the proud owner of the dumbest mind ever... dont insult this space with your presence.

  • I remember me and my brother laughing our asses off to this as kids when we saw this on CBC. kind of disturbing how they beat the wife and kids.

  • After this came "The Gods Must Be Crazy" (1980) with the Coca Cola bottle.

  • I saw this in Intro to Film Studies and not only were we all impressed by the cinematography (for its time) but the striking morbid humor near the end.

  • it's been 20+ years since I don't see this. saw it as a child and was fascinated by it. thank you for uploading !

  • They should show this film at the israeli + palestine conference someday.

  • so true

    and so funny

to find true things that are funny

    takes intelligence

    !

  • genius!

  • I have the biggest cock ever.

  • This 1952 short won the Academy award for best short.

  • This is not "Cine Experimental"... This is animation...

    A technique called Pixalation...

  • so wait.. this is from 1952?

I like the Computer sounds. does any one know how you did someting like this back then?

  • @Emu1gmx If I;m not mistaken he literally hit the magnetic sound strip to create the sounds... I think this is considered the first 100% digital soundtrack ever...

But I may be mixing stories...

  • @timleicand Wrong, there ain't nothing digital about it, it's analog. Digital means it had been done with a computer

  • cool film

  • i dont know how but i gotta make a remix of this it would be so funny

  • dude, this videos so great, my teacher showed it in class and we did a paper on it. Yea, including the deleted scene :) haha

  • molt bo aket home

  • UNA VERDADERA OBRA MAESTRA

  • I get e-mail notifications.

  • I don't mind following my friends, that's what they're are there for. And I lead when I have to.

  • I go to a Catholic school, religion course is mandated. I don't believe in any form of religion of faith will you. I just go because my friends do.

  • "Use da force, luke!" ROFLMAO @ 4:11 xD And then just after that a lightsabe duel at 4:40!

  • truly incredible and inspirational!

  • Genius!!!!

  • was I the only one who heard the night rider theme at 1:25?

  • So, on wikipedia it says that McLaren manipulated (scratched) the sound strip directly to get the sound effects.

Does anyone know if there is a set way, or method to do this? Like certain length shapes/scratches for certain sounds.

Also, does anyone know how to make their own sound stripped film, since they don't make it anymore?

I'm just getting into film, and was just curious about the process.

  • I think there was a line only for sounds right next to a normal film so you can synchronize them. and I think, not sure though, that was not really scratch, more like dots.

  • @knowgostick It was/is a fairly common method for sound effects, since the sound track is right there on the film. I'd hope that there is some information still out there on the technique.

  • One of the best animated videos ever!!! if not the best. Great story, great director. A master of animation. A must have film!!!

  • OMG ive been looking for this ^^

  • They got their flowers in the end.

  • 1952 let's see current events?

    cold war

Hell this film was banned alot at the time or so my animation teacher says

  • It was. When it was shown for the Academy Awards (in which is won one) the part where they murder one another's wives and children was edited out of the piece.

  • This was the creepiest movie I ever watched in elementary school! The teacher had it on a reel to reel too, making it even stranger.

  • Love your neighbor!

  • Epic flower fail D:

  • It's about drugs xD

  • how?

  • I saw this in religion class today when I was stoned. It fucked me up so bad.

  • Did they hit the wives and throw and hit the kids? Whoa

  • Watched this shit in school today.

  • Love it

  • I read the argument about the technique..listen, it is stop motion. I know, I've done it myself and I was priveleged to have sat through a number of lectures and workshops wioth McLaren.

  • It is actually a technique called Pixilation, (not pixelation).

  • Okay, dumb question here. If McLaren did the stop-motion animation in sunlight, why didn't the shadows appear to move?

  • I guess he just filmed it really quickly or something. The shadows DO jump around from shot to shot though.

  • ke adelantado

  • Epic.

  • LOL at the guys beating up their kids. So friggin absurd. Stop motion can do amazing things when mixed with live action though. Way ahead of its time.

  • omygosh

    how does he do it?

  • dude that is insanely awsome how in the world did this guy do it

  • Bellissimo!!!

  • Reminds me of Jan S.'s "Punch and Judy"

  • amazing.. simply amazing

  • Amazing.

    Wish I could levitate.

  • this one's crazy...i love it!!

  • omg last time I saw this was 20 years ago. Thank you!

  • Oscar winner, if i am not mistaken....

  • Awesome! I love it, thanks a lot for uploading it

  • Stop reading the comments and get your essay done 110!!

  • man try watching this when high... its fucking awesome

  • 6:45-6:51 best part

  • lol. cute as well as history making work

  • I just watched this and many other "avant-garde" shorts for my Film Analysis class, and this was by far the best one.
