  • THANK YOU! I've been playing for years, but am self taught, and as you mentioned somewhere along the way this has definitely led to sloppy playing.

  • These videos are great! I didn't think I'd enjoy the tin whistle as much as I am.

  • is one roll equal to one note as in if there are 2 notes in a row do i perform 2 rolls or 1

  • Thanks so much Father for these clear and concise lessons. You have a way of getting right to the nitty-gritty and it is much appreciated.

  • wow thank you!

  • I want a slow motion video to see how your fingers move lol. I think i'm not moving fast enough. I'll keep practicing.

  • this is wonderful. I'm a clarinetist (45 years), recorder (46, but seriously for 27 years) and picked up the tin whistle several years ago and use it in my music classes with easy jigs in a little book I found. Now, I have to play for it with the orchestra and choir special in church tomorrow on a slow song, so I'm going through your videos to get the ornamentation as it sounded like it was lacking "stuff". Tomorrow I will be playing to get by, but will continue to work now I've found you.

  • god bless you ryan duns! your lessons are great.

for those who think this is difficult: just keep practicing - its not that hard if you work, work, work.

  • This is something that actually comes naturally when learning the whistle (we notice the lilts and follow suit). The hardest part is not OVER USING such.

  • wow, more difficult than 't looks like, but 'm sure we can do't

  • I hold the whistle funny (it is normally supposed to be held left over right but i hold it right over left) this makes it easy to to the lop three roll (B, A, and G) but harder to do the lower notes (F,E,D)

  • this slowed me down but i think im gonna love the challenge of getting this down. when i got the hit and cut down i danced around my house so once i get this down, im gonna have another celebration. thanks so much, i could have never got this on my own!

  • I'm stuck on the middle finger of my left hand... argh... I WILL get this... eventually.

Up until week 5 and 6 though, I was breezing through. I think that's because of my past experiences with the clarinet, though.

  • ahhh... so that is how you do it!

Thank you so much for these lessons father!

I need to work especially hard on my left hand, the fingers just dont synchronize as well as the right hand.

  • These lessons are great!....The penny (no pun intended) has suddenly dropped...I would never have made this sort of progress without them!

  • That scale is going to take a lot of practice! It's really fun, though.

  • Woahh, this is definitly a new step.

I will love to master it, but I think I will need lot of practice to get it on every notes.

Thank again and again for your lessons, this give us a way to progress (it would be very chaotic without your help, learning alone)

  • Oof!

    That one slowed me down!

Oh, if only I were co-ordinated rather than handsome...

    Excellent, clear, encouraging lessons.

Alas, I cannot find your little roll-practice tune on your page.

    Shas

  • Ah.

I see it was posted by Tenebrus0.

May I just bring that forward?

"I'm pretty sure the tune goes like this (rolled notes are in caps and I put a / between phrases )

    E f G a B a g / d e F g A g f / E f G a B a g / d e F g A g f"

  • thanks so much for these lessons, they are so helpful! I have been teaching myself to play the tin whistle for a while, but kind of missed proper tuition for the techniques. Im finding the 'hit' movement a little difficult to do really quick, esp with the ring finger. I guess i have to practice that :) i'm so thrilled, it's an amazing instrument. Thanks a ton for posting these lessons!

  • Nice clear teaching, I'm learning alot as I work through these excellent videos. Thank you Ryan for putting it over so well. God bless you.

  • Very many tks. The roll is hard to do but you're very helpful. Take care

  • These lessons are indeed a gracious gift - thank you, Ryan

  • Thank you, and congratulations for your work, Ryan.

  • After just a couple days of practice I have the basic roll, now I just need to get it in to the muscle memory so that I can use it in a song. Thank you Tenebrus0 for posting the notes, that is a big help. And thank you Ryan, you have single handedly made the penny whistle an instrument that is accessible for anyone with an internet connection.

  • you're amazing!!! it sounds fluid and smooth... (this is difficult... but im gonna keep trying)

  • Come ON you people, of course it's difficult! Do you expect to pick the thing up and sound like a songbird right off the bat? Ryan's been playing for over 20 years. Bunch of wussies. Get to work!

  • Comment removed

  • I love how he says...there's something to be said for that....LOL...yeah talent! I'm lacking...LOL

  • Okay...I'm defeated...This is terribly hard. I actually thought I was doing well and looking forward to doing my videos each day...I think I'm going back to playing the flute...

  • It is hard, and it takes time and practice. These lessons can't be done quickly - often, one lesson will take several weeks to master. This is, truth to tell, a big jump BUT if you keep at it, it will come.

  • I have been keeping up my practice, and I find by adding some additional music has kept up my spirits. I think a trip to Ireland may renew my interest. My daughter is excited to go...she wants to see the country "named after her"

Thanks for the input Ryan...I enjoy the videos and my girls love to dance while you play.

  • the country named after her?.............. don't you mean the country she's named after.

  • that's why I put it in quotes...she's only 7. She thinks it's named after her. LOL

  • awesome. hard. awesome.

  • this is hard :(

  • That's very good tutorial about rolls. Thanks.

  • I find it really hard to hit the roll on A and B.

    Any tips?

  • :s this is gonna be kind of hard

  • ugh... this is going to be hard....

  • When Ryan says to tongue the rolls, does anyone know if he means you should tongue once (as in at the beginning of the roll) or quickly three times (for the opening, the cut, and then the hit)? Thanks!

  • @Tenebrus0 just once

  • Yeah iam finally at week 7 of your lessons and i cant seem to find the notes for the tune you made for everyone to practice rolls with. Is there any chance of getting the notes posted soon? i looked on your website and i couldnt find them there :)

Thanks so much for the online lessons. Its wonderful.

  • Hey vm, I'm pretty sure the tune goes like this (rolled notes are in caps and I put a / between phrases )

    E f G a B a g / d e F g A g f / E f G a B a g / d e F g A g f

    Hope this helps!

  • Are there any different fingerings in cutting, hitting and rolling in the second octave?

  • im finding this really difficult is it a cut then hit or hit then cut?

  • The B and the A is a little tricky for me, but I'll keep practicing.

  • Gesuits are the best teacher ever! I'm proud to be Catholic!

  • Another thank you for this wonderful resource. I've been having a great time these last few days practicing the ornamentation. You suggested tonguing the rolls-may I ask you to elaborate on this a little more? Also, I have realised that I shouldn't be aiming to cover the hole entirely to achieve the ornaments, this is what results in the classical sounding half-step turns!

  • Thank you again! I've been playing the tin whistle for about 5 days now and if I say so myself I do pretty good E,F,G rolls now (my wife on the other hand was not very pleased when I practised rolls for an hour earlier today!). My A and B rolls still sound horrible though.

  • It's a pity you haven't started posting earlier. It took me ages to figure out on my own the cuts, rolls and other ornamentations. I was playing Irish music for five years without sounding really Irish, only sort of. And it's still hard to get rid of my earlier bad habits.

    Anyway, thanks for posting, Father.

PS: The melody you made up here is not nonsensical at all:) I think the Pride of Pentravore (or the song Eiline Og) begins almost like that.
