The only "workable" synthesis is to be found in the form of state capitalism that is extant within much of Europe and much of the America's, etc. And this reflect a workable model? "And from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" supposes what?
- As Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett have demonstrated in their peer reviewed book, The Spirit Level, Why Equality is Better for Everyone, countries with a greater degree of equality spend considerably less on prisons and police, have lower levels of mental illness and drug abuse, and much higher levels of innovation, measured by the number of patents registered per million people.

In reply to 4500jas, water in your milkshake is not desirable, but try adding a banana, a strawberry, some yoghurt, and some honey, and you'll find it not only very tasty, but also nutritous.
I would like to draw your attention to what I believe is a fine example of a third way economy - Norway seems to have the balance right between the market place and the government, and proves that the third way is not only achievable, but also very successfull.
Many European socialist parties have reverted to this ideology. Spain uses this and believe me it does not work. Capitalists still do their thing while good welfare systems pick up the pieces. My uncles (he's spainish) sister is poor and unemployed. She has a college degree for computer engineering and has tried hard, but now works for the capitalists at a department store. Her apartment is collectively paid for between her and the family. Believe me third way does not work!
Third way:Socialism:.water:milkshake. Ewww you want a watery milkshake, that's what you get with social democracy and third way. It's easy let workers control capital. Let us be in control of the capitalists. It's easy real democratic socialism (commonly confused with third way and social democracy) works because it is socialism controlled by the people. In third way you let the capitalists exploit everyone and the government picks up the pieces. Watered down socialism is gross.
Outstanding. I've been saying this for years. I did however find a place in America where this third way exist. I had to join it to get the best of both worlds. It is called the government. Why do you think politicians push government programs and service. Don't be scared America. Hop onboard and pitch in. Vote for anyone supporting a flat tax.
As far as guns are concerned, its a pretty simple equation, less access to guns less shootings, how many high school massacres do you need before you get the picture. FDR's new deal was a long way off the Third Way i was talking about, the closest model would have to be the Norwegian one, the Norwegians have a very egalitarian society, and are in a better position than most, when it comes to the global economic crisis. The richest person is the one who wants the least.
Capitalism is in a bar, he's drunk, he looks over and sees socialism, and she is lookin' mighty fine tonight. Long story short they sleep together. Capitalism wakes and looks what next to him and says "Oh shit, fuck me." They both promise never to speak of that night again. Then one day socialism calls capitalism and says "I'm pregnant with social democracy". "OH SHIT, WE ME GOD?" The baby is born and it is an abomanation of Christ. It has warts that say "Welfare" on them and eats it's own shit.
Obviously you have issues with welfare, yes passive welfare can have its problems, but its certainly more humane than neglecting the disadvantaged.
Its very curious to me, that most people who dont believe in welfare and social justice, are the first ones to jump up and down when the crime rate is out of control.
Is it just a coincidence that the majority of prisoners come from disadvantaged back grounds, and that crime rates go up during tough economic times ?
Crime rates usually go out of control when gun control goes up.
And besides, we have had a Third Way Social democracy since FDR practically, where is my free shit? Where is that utopia with unicorns and pro-welfare pixie fairies going around making everybody rich?
Free markets had failed before the economic crash (Poverty and Climate change), the current economic turmoil has just driven more nails into the coffin, planned and well regulated markets yes, but they must recognise that growth has limits (finite resources), and we must as a humane society garauntee the basics for all people, clean air, clean water, adequate food, sanitation, health and education.
Mussolini had the perfect third way.

Third Way is a failed compromise.
It's either free-markets or planned markets from now on.
