Wow, what a drawing, you have become my source of inspiration, thanks for sharing ur work & skills with us, wish if u cud upload high quality video. Thanks!
It's funny reading the comments claiming they are "better" when they have no proof. Also, Lon is capturing a face in a small amount of time and teaching techniques with pastels (I didn't think about the band aids until I watched this).
i appreciate this work of art regarding the short time and acceptable resemblance. but in my opinion art is a laborious and long lasting work with a result which is always admired regardless the how it is done!
This was very informative. I've only just started drawing, and have discovered that after 49 years of life I actually can do it. I would have liked to have seen how you detailed the eyes, nose, and mouth....it was cut in this video. Thanks for your instruction!
So glad you enjoy them, and hope that you will gain a little here and there. You can't get this kind of stuff very often, as there just aren't that many people talking about sketching techniques. Everyone is into photo realism. Not I.
I am particularly disgusted by the negative commentary on this page.
Wooooga2c, despite your claims to be a better artist (which stand unproven) - one thing that is obvious is that you are FAR less professional as an artist.
There is nothing worth questioning in any of these videos. This man has a ton of experience, and his skills are amazing.
Having said that, very few portraits are 100% accurate anyway. In fact, some artists may soften certain details (such as a big nose).
I can't believe I found this great videos on here where an old man teach out for free online on youtube his art skills and techniques. And then I look at the comments and see whiney bitch after whiney bitch. There is a reason why your not famous and he is. And the word is humility, and you complaining in here have none.
I would like to thank the author for all these nice videos, youtube is the best thing that happend on this planet in a long time and I learn something new everyday here.

what i meant was, this guy Lon Haverly loves himself, and thinks he's the next best thing since sliced bread, he can't even draw the correct proportions of the human face, i am much better no offense Lon jst thwe truth
So he has confidence in what he does, is that a bad thing?
He has over 33 years of experience, and what do you have? If you think youre better, that's great, but no one cares. Show yourself doing something better in the time that he can, then maybe I'll respect you a little more.
Lon's idea to use the bandaide for blending is genious... I am an art student and I have the same problem he did this idea is great and works great for using both charcoal and pastels. it also helps with changing colors and multiple pieces.
that is a good point. i understood y u might want to do that in the first place, but i just felt like stating the obvious. and by the way, that comment wus in no way to insult, u are a very very good artist and i would wish to be that good anyday
haha the gurl throught the whole thing is just looking around like, wat the fuck is he talking about xD anywayz, nice portrait lon, it wuz rlly good. one thing that i notice and like about almost all of ur portraits is that there is always one thing thats different from the person and the drawing. like, just one small thing like the size of the face or the eye. thats not a bad thing, it gives it a kind of unique style. anyways, good job
Yeah, I am not a stickler for form, as much as for line style and freshness of expression. So, you compromise the form a little for the sponteneity. It is worth it. And, it is even a better likeness, with more jazz. There is alot more to getting a likeness than photo realism.
hi lon im so happy i can talk 2 u directly like dis, i draw well..still life tho, im scared of drawing livin things. u hav rly encouraged me,im gna strt drawin again, still life dat is..^-^
Past excellant, you have captured the object with all sences tuned in.Sight, depth, perception, feelings and excellant lines and angle issues, Very impressed.I am learning your techniques. They are not easy as long as I keepfocus! Thanks: Brad Robinson
You're a great artist, and it's very nice of you to post this. I am a self taught portrait artist and I can use all the tips I can get. The band aids are genious I can't wait to try it out right now!!!
What I don't understand is when I draw people on YouTube, (like an example person) and I draw them quite well... But when I draw like one of my friends or something , I always get the proportions wrong... Any tips that you could give me??
so swwet of you

Je suis déçu de cette vidéo. Le talent est indéniable mais, il y a un mais.
J'attendais le passage des détails du visage. Et la vidéo ne montre pas comment il dessine les yeux, la bouche etc...

It is good practice to copy until you learn. DOmn't be in a hurry to draw from life. Give it time. You will learn.

over 100,000 portraits? wow impressive! how many is that in one day?
jensenj08 4 years ago
I have drawn 40 or so drawings a day during the busy season. Usually 10-20 drawings a day. For 33 years, 300 days a year.
lonhaverly 4 years ago
Decembers alone probably close to 25,000 drawings easliy.
lonhaverly 4 years ago
no wonder you are so good! thats a ton of experience!
jensenj08 4 years ago
Soneone said, there are 3000 bad drawings in your hand, and you have to get rid of them all!
