  • Malik Jubal-There is an episode of All In The Family in which the actor Ron Glass plays a Black Power character confronting Archie Bunker. Glass said that he based his charecterization of the Black Power Mow Mow, as Archie called him, on Gil Scott Heron. Malik Jubal

  • Have y'all ever took an independent thought....like freed your mind from from your own perspective???

Gil Scott-Heron was GREAT period! He was not lost to drugs or was he a victim of addiction.

He was politically transcendent, a sublime vocal resonance that hit all over your body. He made Peace with his demons and was still incredibly talented and gifted, accomplishing more than his Jury ever will. Thanks for all the songs. Oh and F that godfather of Rap crap, Gil Could sing his Ass oFF!

  • Gil was one of the best political, jazz and spiritual musician during the 70's, 80's and part of the 90's. I'm glad I got a chance to meet and hang out with him in London. Every opportunity I had I would go see him preform. I feel sad that no one close enough to him could help him with his addictions. What a brilliant man, another great artist lost to drugs. God bless his soul and his love ones... peace

  • RIP - a great man

  • RIP-I remember the mid 70s & Johannesberg

  • RIP my brother.

  • RIP GSH

This is the best version of Johassesburg that I've seen on you tube...looks like GIl was feeling good....I'm dating myself but I saw him back in 1980 while in college, glad I got to see him again last yeart at Central Park. Gil kept fighting the fight. and came back. So sorry to hear about this...He will be missed by those who truly have an appreciation for the best music and poetry of our era, which was not necessarily the most popular; in fact often it was not the most popular...

  • RIP Forever Gil.... All time class act and sounds.

  • Remember when they were on

    Saturday Night Live?

  • I do. Saw it on the original air date - Wow - long time ago....

  • I saw him at a gig in London, something to do with the GLC it was the eighties and the whole of the nation wre politically divided.

  • Yeah I remember it, too. I remember that one guy tossing that shaker thing in the air.

    This gentleman is something special.

  • My favorite episode! Pryor shined, too.

I actually hunted down From South Africa to South Carolina just because of the SNL performance and am now a GSH addict.

  • @klarmer I thought I was the only one. I went out and bought a compilation LP that week.

  • Gil Scott Heron is a fucking hero!

  • That is true. Good Health

  • I'm 32, it was not my era, but I'm a musician, and I definitely think Gill Scott, gave a little more than motivation from his lyrics, I believe he is the first who trascended from blues, to everything that we hear now, reffering to rap, soul, r & b, break beat, etc..hope he gets out of the can soon..

  • All right you said it. The man was before his time and I wonder what he is thinking in these times when very few people are out there expressing poetry the way he did back then. Love this song and love Gil Scot Heron.

  • Wow is that Barnett Williams on the shakerai?

  • great stuff

  • This man would put on a show and you would leave educated.

GIL YOU ARE STILL THE MAN!!!!

  • I live this...

  • OGWT, mmmmm classic
