Thanks for the feedback. We would agree, a spey like cast can come in handy for nymphing situations, however this situation didn’t require nearly as much line and so this shorter cast was executed.
I recall fishing the Green River in Utah at high water trying to reach a stacked riffle in the middle…a double roll cast AKA spey cast was a must!
I'm a big fan of using a double spey cast variation in these situations actually. Works on longer drifts pretty well too as well as cutting through wind well and has good accuracy. Lastly I NEVER get windknots with a double spey.
i find that the roll cast actually is more precise and kinda "forces" the fly down into the water. I use this cast quite often but find it a little more exausting. The roll cast is more of a flick of the wrist, and is quite easy to do all day long. That river he is fishing and that angle, I would prolly use this "geltle whip" kinda cast. Just my 2 cents. Roll cast is more for pocket waters.

@michaelsw0rd probaby yarn or clip on indicators....yarn is the best for nymphing in my opinion
