  • Steve's voice is just so unique and wonderful. I don't care if he is wearing make-up, he's SOOOOO cute.

  • got to say your comment had me laughing. you sound so sad, a 70s hippy no doubt. was it you being fucked by connolly and his mates in the park ha ha. sad, demented faggots, its a fact, they were always getting done for fucking men on hampstead heath. got a great life you thick cunt

  • @rus524 Hmmmmm you seem a jolly chap, the Sweet weren't everyones cup of tea old chap, but then wouldnt life be boring if everyone liked the same eh? Now if you would kindly fuck off sir and continue with your boyish views elsewhere I would be very grateful, oh by the way, you seem to know a lot about public toilets you sad cunt, I would feel pity for you but to be fair I cant be arsed, ooh look at me I said arse , maybe I'm gay. • brian connolly one gorgeous sexy guy r i p you are not forgotten x

  • Did they nick that off Bowie?

  • @Seanreddify I remember back at that time that the music press investigated it. The Jean Genie by Bowie was released first, so Sweet was getting it in the neck for plagiarism. Examination of the recording dates by journalists at "Melody Maker", however, showed that Blockbuster had been recorded before the Jean Genie.

  • Seeing this again after more than 30 years... it was amazing then and it is still today

The Sweet were the most unique band of the seventies and it is clear they were a heavy influence on Punk Rock

This is nothing like those awfull glamrock-act like Mud

  • Steve Priest is the best! I have to TOTALLY agree with Spooky69, "What I wouldn't give to go back in time and do it with Steve Priest!" LOVE him!!!!!!!!!

  • This song sounds eerily similar to "Day Man" from It's Always Sunny.......

  • great musik

  • Excellent stuff and long may the glorious 70's continue.

  • Takes you back, for sure!

  • I took a flight on Delta to Atlanta a couple of years ago and one of the air crew was the spitting image of Steve. She did wonder why i kept smiling to her each time she came along.

  • All parties maintained that the similarity was, in Nicky Chinn's words, "absolute coincidence". Chinn described a meeting with Bowie at which the latter "looked at me completely deadpan and said 'Cunt!' And then he got up and gave me a hug and said, 'Congratulations..

  • Jean Genie.

  • wow! How camp was Steve!!!! Great music and I defy anyone to compare modern rap to this unassuming yet quality sound!!!!

  • correction: on further observation, that's NOT a Nazi helmet. it's a Kaiser helmet from WWI. still German though.

  • "We just haven't got a clue what to do!" is what Steve says, looking like a chinese cover girl in a Nazi helmet! there's another one were he's got a Hitler mustache and a Swastika band! (Heard he got in trouble for that!) Do you think they got fan mail after this from guys who wanted to fuck that "chick" on bass? O.K. Steve tone it down! Seems later, he did.

  • Back in the 70s Boys and Girls wanted to look like The Sweet , and other Glam Rockers, people nowadays would find it hard to believe , happy days indeed ,Steve was the Man loved the Picklehaube!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Reebes100 u got that right , i think the word cunt must excite it

  • dont know what you mean. is it because i tell the truth, and i wont be bullied by cowards

  • @carlton754 what telling people to top themselves, and that they are talking shite, pot kettle and black spring to mind

  • @carlton754 omg, you sound like a real piece of work

  • @carlton754 You're a pathetic racist, homophobic and biggotted little man hiding behind a keyboard to make the most hostile and uneducated points. Is there anyone on YouTube you haven't told to kill themselves or accuse them of being boring faggots. Your nothing but a pathetic bully and I bet your balls would shrink if ever you met any of the people you have started on here. I'm amazed you pay taxes I am amazed anyone employs such a filth mongerer as you.

  • @Shackleton1976 well said mate x

  • carlton754 = sounds like your the gay dude who can't face his own reality. So you project your own self loathing on others, your a sick bastard. But your ranting is self evident by people here who know your an asshole!

Maybe you just need to step out of your closet! And your other pals like rus524.

  • thats right carlton go on the alvin stardust sites, its all there. stardust, humperdink, connolly and scott of the sweet and others. they were all into each other. go on the sites and you will find out about it. read what glitters drummer said. but the daft mong fans of these sad twats wont believe it, but there you go. the sweet were perverted in a big way. rumour has it they were fucking at least 2 of the bay city rollers. fucking sad peado cunts.

  • One of the best glam bands from the 70s Brilliant x

  • No wonder Steve didn't get any van insurance back then, dressed like that!!!

  • the singer and andy scott both had realtionships with gary glitter. no wonder they are off their heads. very poor band, useless really. bit pervey arent they. mind you with gary glitter as your boy friend no wonder ha ha ha .

  • @carlton754

you are the biggest asshole I have heard from, they were not gay and had more puntang than you will ever hope to get in your lifetime. Their so called relationship was a musical exchange and professional relationship. Granted Gary Glitter was messed up and a jackass but it does not mean "guilt by association"

  • my younger brother loved the sweet and could actually reach the high background note.sadly he died at age 45 so his ones for you Tony.

  • sweet,May super Group of Glam rock, thanks,to Wiggy

  • Steve is good looking.

  • I miss glam, so much fun unlike today's music.

  • @RTT8001

I miss it as well, and decent new-wave music as well.

  • What I wouldn't give to go back in time and do it with Steve Priest!! (Especially in this video)

  • @MySpooky69: I must TOTALLY agree with you there, Steve Priest is the absolute best and I would love to go back in time and do it with him too! lol

  • @MySpooky69: I must TOTALLY agree with you there, Steve Priest is the absolute best and I would love to go back in time and do it with him too! lol

  • Surely this version is far better.....youtube.com/watch?v=NTfZCg6zj9M

  • Great song (from my era). And an amazingly clear video from 1973. Thanks.

  • the one with the hat is Steve Priest right? :)

  • @muppet582 no, steve preist is the one on the left, that looks like a woman

  • @CenaTv2 a gorgeous woman -mind you i took a look at whats he's like now and thats it, fantasy ruined lol

  • STEVE PRIEST FREAK OF THE CENTURY 10/10 HITLER RAOFLMFAO

  • The Sweet were massive in the seventies....this was a classic, and it still sounds great....superb post WiggyStHelensUK.

  • It seems TOTP2 redubbed the record onto this showing of the clip, because a re-showing of the complete 1973 TOTP Christmas Special in 1991 revealed a guitar feedback sound behind heard partway through (which is what they were reacting to when they all started grinning at each other).

  • FUCKING GENIUS 10/10 BASTARDS

  • Just turn it up LOUD!

  • First single I ever bought and played it to death!

  • On Wikipedia it says that Block Buster!'s riff, was considers markedly similar to fellow RCA artist Bowie's "The Jean Genie", which was released shortly before. but all parties maintain that this was pure coincidence.

  • @WoodRatGirl If there is influence either way is impossible to determine now, but they have both made their own version around the riff. I like the Sweet s interpretation better, becoz Bowie s 'Jean Genie' has no 'climax' and is kind of static compared to this. Thanks for the info coz I did not know about this 'coincidence'.

  • @carlphone

Well yes this is more exciting compared to "Jean Genie", I have to admit with you.

But I'm a big Bowie fan, so I'm faithful to him lol. You're welcome also ;)

  • Oh my god....didnt Steve love himself. He looked like he was enjoying all that glam stuff a little bit too much. They were good though. I got to see them in the late 80's at Sherdley show in St helens (well some form of them anyway). As much as I enjoyed that, I'd loved to have been able to see them in the early 70's at their peak. I was on around 8 y o though :)

  • I still have no idea what this song is about.

  • Check out Steve with the "toking" signal...check out how he wipes his nose at the end pure drug references although what they were snorting back in '73 was anybody's guess. This was before they discovered cocaine pretty sure. Maybe the odd snort of heroin? Or crushed pills?

  • I go through phases watching this....first, it was love at first Steve, then, I rounded out and started fancying Mick. Now it's kind of looking like Andy is so charming in this video too. Oh, so many choices!

  • When I was 11 years old this came out I was watching this with my dad now 94 YO

Just before the 7 pm news. I will never forget that day ever. BEST BAND EVER

STEVE PRIEST is such a LEGEND.

  • Back in the day if ya got on Top Of The Pop you was 'Johnny big bollocks' and had hit the bigtime :P

    TOTP2 owns!

  • Steve you're so delicious in this video I just want to suck on your teeth. BTW Is that the Universal Sign Language for Toke??

  • <3 amazing song <3 ;D

  • Weird thing is that not only does it sound like Jean Genie, I think it actually kept Jean Genie off the top of the chart. Odd coincidence.

  • @justanopinionyeah

That drumming does remind you indeed of Bowie's "Jean Genie."

  • @CrazyWebGuy kinda does hehe only noticed it when i read this XD

  • great music from my child hood days These guys could play

  • Keep you eyes on the road your hands upon the wheel...sounds exactly like Roadhouse Blues by the Doors

  • Always and forever the Number one Glam Rock Band of the world...!

  • this song is very good,brian conolly,remember

  • the guitarist far left, is it a man or woman?

  • Isn't Mick the drummer? Are they taking the piss for their mime act?

  • Steve's the man! (I think!)

  • @ecnalubma696969 U got that right...guess he liked getting blockbusted!!!

  • Yeah Jean Genie, blah blah blah. We know the drill.

  • Aquarius '73 rocks!

  • That was a hit the day I was born... they look like a J-Rock band! Quite daring for the time.Nice video.

  • @NikiforosJoannis... LOL You must have just done the same search as me.. that was number one on the day I was born also!!! Go Aquarius '73! :D

  • @Carlosthecactus Sure! Facebook's engines LOL... A friend in a masters program (I do doc) had Take my breath away (Berlim) Top Gun theme!!! I actually saw that movie. Creepy!

  • @NikiforosJoannis, I LOVED top gun :D. "I feel the need.. the need for speed!" Great line!

And the coincidences continue, I am also doing my PhD, I am in fact working some final changes into my background so I can submit next week!

  • Creepy! If you're doin Docs in healthcare management or business I will start praying to expelling demons... or throw a BLOCKBUSTER! Sucess in your thesis defense pal! I am still going to qualify (hope I do)

  • LOL.. No we're safe there, I work in computing science. Good luck with your qualification and thesis!

  • u better watch out if u got long black hair

  • thanks for posting this fantastic video of one of my favorite groups !!!

  • wot a classic 70's song from the best group from the 70's.

  • Saw this track on a film... heavy.

The art is to be a chameleon.

Bowie (overated primarily due to the lack of competition), Madonna, (overated) etc

  • Madonna definately, but I think Bowie deserves what he's gotten in his career. And personally, I hate mainstream music.

  • Much of today's mainstream is crap compared to previous decades - it's too watered down.

  • I think the British music industry is to blame for Sweet being classified as a Glam Rock band...they were highly rated in Germany as a ROCK BAND...why didn't the British music industry give them the credit they deserve? Roxy music were awful!

  • i may be a old boy but the sweet were brilllll in there day.but members of the band were foolish at there own staiuts at there time.........

  • what are 'staiuts'?

  • You're right about that - I have sent comments many times making the same point...when I tell people I like Sweet, they either think I'm joking or they snigger. They don't even know about the great tracks from Sweet albums...they think Sweet only sang CoCo, Little Willy, Blockbuster etc...it's v hard to change their minds. RIP darling BC.

  • Was it just a coincidence that the riff is the same? If it's true that Sweet delayed the release of Blockbuster, then it is just another example of just great THE GREAT SWEET were! Love you Brian, RIP. And RIP Mick too.

  • Huh... Andy has an extra leg...

  • sounds a bit like david bowie jean jeanie

  • Have you heard the other Sweet

  • Could be an advert for the video chain called....

  • damn Steve rules in this one!

  • 1:03

Haha, awesome. If a band decides to cover this song, they HAVE to do that little bit there for it to be a true tribute

  • recently saw steves version in concert he look alot diferrent , still was very fun concert.

I would love to see the other version anyone know why the two hate each other and wich i better

  • I gotta agree with you, Mav. Fuck all the "P.C" stuff, and rock. Let the People decide!

  • who cares what they are wearing...it's a bit of fun....lighten up....great song....classic

  • Sorry, old friend. It's just the Black SS-Style Jacket and the Red Swazi Armband took my mind off the helm, which is def Second Reich.

  • So?

  • What's with the Nazi drag the bass player is sportin'? Still, the song ROCKS!

  • er small but somewhat vital point Ultrabrut old son..the helmet he is waring is a German world war one helmet..(dropped from the Imperial German army uniform dress code after 1915) nothing to do with the Nazi's at all!

  • well back in those days the PC brigade didn't exist and people could have fun.....you know, take the piss a bit..take the mick out of things without being slated for it.. or worrying if they were upsetting all the people who just free loaded their way into the UK

  • A Very True statement!! The Good Old days Indeed!

  • FAB

  • The Jean Genie

  • no. nashville teens - tobacco road.

  • jean genie was david bowie

  • Not my fave b ut one of my top ten preferences in the 70's. The guy with the blond hair looks different from the other rock bands then, so I bought the LP (acronym for record) . But I liked then unique sound. But Led Zep and Osborne were tops.

  • the guy in the nazi helmet is funny as

  • He is the bassist, Steve Priest (very funny, indeed!)

  • Hes a Woman True Story

  • ww1 protection actually

  • Steve Priest should be declared a national treasure. What a character! That little jump at the end is priceless.

  • Gotta love Steve.

  • my ma spat me out into this time . . nay feckin wonder im mad

  • hmmm, the gene genie by bowie -- cool :P

  • love this song brings back memories of me and my mum

  • Incase you weren't aware....this track is from 1973, not the 80's :-)

  • @MUSICLOVER72 oops ment to up it

  • What year were you born, feller?

  • Numer 1 Glam Rocku.

  • Thurr's been a muuuuuuuuuuuurder.

  • Wow, I quite like Sweet but they really seemed to be taking the piss out of it on this "performance". Priest especially seemed to be just horsing around. Oh well, what can one expect with lip synching, right?

  • 1. they are not lip syncing

    2. thats wot they do they arnt serious people!!

  • Okay then, don't get your drawers in a twist. What makes you think they wern't lip syncing? Sure looked like it. Most old TV shows this was the case. As for what they do? How would you know, the band was established and falling apart before you were even born...Cheers!

  • my dad loved them and told me everything i need to know about them so dont bad mouth them please =D x x

  • 1. I'm sorry but they are. You always had to lip synch during a TOTP performance. That's just how it was. But this is not to put this womderful and indeed very talented band down. They could do it live alright, but here they are lip synching, as everybody did on TOTP.

  • why?

  • Why did they lip-synch? I suppose it was easier for the producers, they only had to film them instead of sorting out all the live sound stuff

  • Yeah, something like that, 99.9% of TOTP performances were mimed. I guess it was Top of the Pops after all, and not Top of the Live Shows.

  • i could imagine dance this at my wedding with Black tuxedo and my bride annika anne as white gown
