The hp is a lot bulkier, and I think it's more geared towards entertainment than work. I have a normal X61, and I love it. I have to say though, the one weak point is that the express card slot area (on the left side) is very weak, and the little gate broke off on me. However, I would still go with the Thinkpad over almost any other computer, Macs included.
@smellytoilet1996 Lenovo is owned by IBM. they now produce their laptops under the lenovo name and just sell severs and other working stations under the IBM flag.
you can instal it from a flash drive, but if you want to instal windows vista or windows 7(which is mostly recomanded because will have better touch screen support and better aplication) you will need a 4Gb one ore 8gb.
ok can someone please help me!! I just dropped my t41 like 5 minutes ago and it wont boot and the battery and sleep lights on the front are flashing. I removed the harddrive and when the harddrive was totally out of the computer the lights were still flashing. Im scared it might be the motherboard or something like that..please help
I'm an incoming college freshman in the fall and I am interested to buy a tablet PC. I wish to use for note-taking and for outdoor activities. I'm in a crossroads of either choosing a HP tx2500 or a Lenovo X61. They both sound good. But what would you guys recommend? Thanks
Go with the X61s. IBM is known for their reliability (although they are somewhat more expensive). Buy the base line model and upgrade the RAM and hard drive yourself to save money.
This thing is tiny, seriously my dad brought it home and his old one (thinkpad T42) is about twice the size and thickness. Too bad it doesnt have an optical CD drive though then it would have been kick ass :D
I believe you can order it with XP, even if you can't, you can uninstall Vista a put a fresh copy of XP on there. The beauty of ThinkPad's is that all your vital recovery data is hardwired into the computer itself via ThinkVantage. It's just one of the many reasons I love my ThinkPad!
I'm planning to purchase the X61 model in the 1st quarter of 2008. I can't wait. Currently, the laptop I use is 5 years old and it's showing its age. Not only is it old and bulky, but deteriorating performance is becoming apparent.
optical media is becoming outdated. If you need a drive, you can get external dvd burners for 66-70 dollars which you can keep at and connect at home. You can even boot from these drives off of the x61 if you ever need to do a clean OS install. @2.8lbs.. be sure that this laptop will rise in price.
It isn't an "extra" battery, it is an extended life battery, and yes it is removeable. You can replace it with the smaller, shorter life battery, if you so choose.
one question, is it a big inconvenience NOT having a CD/DVD drive?? or maybe flash drives are a better replacement.. (for students or to share data among friends)
i rarely use the cd drive. all i ever use is the usb flash drive. my x61 is awesome! when other people are lugging around a bulky dell or mac, i have this ultraportable!
Well, I ended up getting a T61 (with the optical drive) for some other reasons (screen resolution..etc, price). I think it's actually quite alright to have a laptop without the optical drive! The Windows and all the backup data is stored already on the hard drive partition, and if there's any software to install or some data disks to access, you could always do that at home conveniently. USB powered drives would not be a good idea since you have the docking station!
trackpoint is the really best, because:
1. can use it with gloves
2. greasy fingers
3. and it wont fail if it´s dirty^^

How can you install XP, there is no optical driver!
JuneSiyu 2 years ago
Connect an external optical drive or install from a usb drive.
