The irony of this film is that everyone who ever protested or took offense to this film-- Ralph Bakshi was entirely in agreeance with them. That was the entire point of the film: it took an outrageously racist name and visual style, and used it to completely condemn racism and stereotyping itself. For a similar comparison, the manga Cyborg 009 did the same in 1964 with a multi-ethnic cast that, while stereotypical in every way, actually gave the middle finger to racism in its characterization.
"Coonskin" !!! ??? What the hell is that all about? Please explain in what way a person with what we refer to as "black" skin is in anyway like a raccoon. Who was the ignorant person that thought that one up? Idiot, can't tell the difference between a person with black skin and that of a small four legged rodent with fur.
What would the lyrics to this song look like in 2011? "I shot my neighbor, I stabbed my brother, I smoked a blunt, I robbed my mother...watch me dance..."
I rented a video about 15(18?)yrs ago called "street fighter". the one we wanted was based on the video game. Anyone know why this was re-released under that title?
@1148up Cuz people thought Coonskin had distasteful racist overtones, and when all of the protests killed its release, people tried to make money off of it by sneaking it in under a new name.
@mrmojorsn111 I completely agree. Personally, I haven't see Coonskin, but being a Scatman Crothers fan, I stumbled across this on YouTube, and was fascinated by it. You're right; it took a lot of intestinal fortitude to open a film with that song. It's a mainstay on my Playlist, and I hope more viewers check this out...
Both Ralph Bakshi and Scatman Crothers had enormous balls to OPEN a film with a song like this! I remember renting this on VHS and watching the opening credit about 30 times. I'd only know Crothers as an actor; I didn't know the man could sing and perform with such visceral power. Also, the song is about all the menial and disenfranchised personae that WHITE America has forced onto blacks in our society. The rest of the film as a disappointment after the brilliant credits!
A beautiful man, and a beautiful song. The meaning is evident to anyone with any sense. If you don't understand this song, you just may be part of the problem.
This song only seems to be powerful to the people who really understand what he's saying. Sad that there's a lot of people who can appreciate a genius like Scatman Crothers.
The Man you see here is a Genius. Im letting you all know that i am a White Guy. And to me, it doesnt matter the color of anybodies skin. This man is a Genius. And by Genius i mean, Scatman Crothers is amazingly Talented and i wish he was still here. God Bless my Brothers from another mother out there and God Bless your Families.
I don't even know what to say about this. That's what real music does to a person - it just shuts your know-nothing mouth and puts you in your place. Scatman. THE SHIT.
I first saw this movie with a friend. I "got" this song, but he didn't... he just found offensive and didn't see the meaning behind the lyrics. I was so disappointed in him.
That said, I enjoyed this song more then the actual movie.
This is profound on so many levels. Protest marches, stereotypes, the inability to obtain the American dream, predjudice--powerful stuff!!!! WALK ON EVERYONE!
@PatriotsCall69 Exactly in what way do you mean. What kind of vague statement is this? And people have agreed with you!!! The word " nigger" comes from Negro that was used to describe people with black skin. Also means black-hearted. I'm neither. What the hell are you talking about? If you want to make a statement about the condition of today's society, be clear so your meaning is understood. Stop with this vague, meaning dribble you're just repeating.
@nit2winit11 It is apparent that this song was an inditement of that term done very cleverly, like all were good for is cleaning and dancing and we must have the devil in us.
I really, really like this song. It really deserves a place in music/cultural history, but I guess because of the lyrics people assume it's some old minstrel show song, while it was actually written by Ralph Bakshi and Scatman Crothers.
No, he said "Minstrel Man". Minstrel shows were the old vaudeville-type shows performed by performers in black face, portraying exaggerated and stereotypical images of black people.
In history class we had to pick one song to use to describe each decade from 1910 till now and for the 60s I chose this one and I debated with my teach over its appropriatness and I convinced her that it's positive and the movie is Pro-black and I'm aloud to use it : )
scatman crothers was a pioneer in music,i myself appreciate scatman, cab calloway etc, they paved the way for the black artist many enjoy today although i dont like much of it now myself
I saw this as a child (it was renamed STREET FIGHT then) and have been a follower of Ralph Bakshi since. An EXTREMELY interesting man. The Jewish & African American communities have more in common than 1 is led to believe. Of course this has nothing to do with the above movie, just had to comment. Read about Bakshi and you'll draw your own conclusion.
You are so right- the African American and Jewish communities have so much in common, and really share quite a lot of history; most whites involved in the civil rights movement were Jews. For a fascinating personality, you should read up on Paul Robeson- an African American socialist. There is a recording of him singing a Jewish partisan song in Yiddish during a concert in Soviet Russia, very moving as you can basically feel two cultures coming together in one song.
I could see Jazz from Transformers singing this in the show!
