In the old Real live action version (the short movies not the TV series), there was a short segment in which they showed The cryptkeeper as an old delivery guy, he just looked like a creepy old man.

(but of course in the TV series he was born from a mummy and a mutant and therefore looks like a zombie- there was an episode of how he became an that was the explanation =P)
