This puts me right back in the 70's. I saw him around '78 at The Choo Choo Train on 4th Av in Tucson, Az. I got to meet him that night. During the concert Shawn sometimes had to use a cheat sheet for the lirics. He said it was because he had written so many songs that he would forget some of the words or maybe he was just high, I don't think so because he rocked that night Is there anybody out there today that can equal this?
brings back such great memories....and thanks to my mom, who introduced me to him when i was abt 10...have loved his music since first time...mom and i got to see him in houston,tx, 1996, was the last concert she and i saw together....
Minneapolis, Minnesota in about 1974. Live concert and he was fantastic. He would sit on the edge of the stage during a band break and actually talk with the audience.
The beautiful vibration in his voice, a wonderful memory from the eighties, now reminds me of Tim Buckley, who has a similar kind of haunting tremble...
Bravo! Shawn your such an amazing Musician! Inspired me through my teens. Born 1963.... Glad to hear you in Africa...... What a land. Gods speed and direction.
@atfatw Sorry, but Shawn is still playing after more than 50 years. You should be happy about it. Age is just a number. All my respect goes to Shawn Phillips, I love him so much.
@EricMarsan many times kid,. these people lose their abilities I mean you can't stay young forever and shawn couldn't stay talented forever. he used to walk around when he was a kid and now he can still do that as an old old man
i thought id never hear this album again. i was with some 1 then, and i loved her deeply she had it and i allways loved hearing this album ,. and yes i got over are love . it took soom time , but i will never get over the songs
Shawn told me the story the night in Chicago. He and is lady were in a boat on the Mediterranean Sea. He went down to clean the bilge, where water accumulates and the drive shaft of the boat runs through. While cleaning the bilge his hair got caught in the drive shaft ripping open a portion of his head. They pulled into the closest port which by incredible luck, one of the best plastic surgeons in the country was in attendance. I could still see the pain in his eyes as he told the story.
Absolutely brilliant, thanks a lot for this "Best of the Best"! used to listen to this when I was "a bit younger", lost the album but his musik never left my head and heart through all those years.
Saw him in Chicago for two shows the same night. Got to meet him between sets. He'd lost his hair. I made the mistake of asking what happened...Total silence. Then we talked. He played, by my request, this song for the woman I loved and another for my lost brother...
@jackl3 I'm sure his hair is a sore subject with him. He had a terrible accident on a lake in Italy involving his beautiful hair and an outboard motor.
@jackl3 his famous ponytale was cut off by a motoboat propellerwhile swimming I guess the baldness fairy visited him. when a child the tooth fairy one by one got his teeth and the baldness fairy on by one got his hair!
@jackl3 I also met him in Rochester,NY. He said he had caught his hair in the propeller shaft on his boat and had to torn from his scalp. The doctor's questioned if it may cause nerve damage to his hands/hand. Thankfully,,this was not the case. That must have been in the early to mid 70's.
This is the way to do it!!!!!! Saw him in Santonio Tex in Mar '72--a mind blower!!!!An 'ol Texas Boy....---"If you got something to tell on me it better be good."
@SuperHardshell saw him in chicago about the same time and knew every word of his songs and thought he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen or heard -- knew every word and was so grateful that there was a radio station in Chicago who had a dj who loved him ---ne
Thanks for posting this , it's a great album . Got the cd I still like to listen to the lp of this .

I heard he had a messy but survivable accident with his hair and a speedboat motor in Italy. That was the word in Austin, in the 70s.

Great. Thanks for posting this. I LOVED this album back in the day. Actually I only listened to this "side" of the album usually.
Always liked, "It's hard to fall out of love completely. It's harder to come back discretely," and "a woman of the land..."
The whole side of the album flowed so well. Always wondered why this didn't get wider recognition. Good to see it's still alive 30 years later.
