@bmpman no, jailbreaking does not erase data if you do it correctly, if you fail to get it into DFU mode, and instead get it in recovery mode, you will lose all data.

Ok, I followed the exact instructions and this what happened to my iPhone 4. I ended up with a you are on tethered mode and the phone stayed on the black screen with all the coding coming down. @johnrjordan12 Go into itunes right click the name of your device then click sync (if you auto sync you can skip that step) after you are all synced right click the name of your device again in itunes and click backup.
