I was up for france in the final but the story behind it is amazing : this nation where people live and breathe rugby is hosting rwc, 24 years after their previous victory, just after the christchurch earthquake occurs. Massive favourites, but france, the underdogs perform the game of their lives. 3 flyhalfs are injured, and then the 4th choice fly half comes on to kick the winning score. Almost choke but hang on for a deserved triumph. What a story

I watched this as a 11 year old kid on a black and white TV at Waihi Beach! Man werent the scrums great before the touch pause engage rubbish!! Also what a diference that there isnt stupid music blaring throughout the game.

The players were so small - the ABs No. 6 (Alan Whetton?) was less bulky than a lock would be nowadays. And can anyone remember Terry Wright?!

Also, look at how messy the lineouts were back then without lifting? It really was a lottery and probably encouraged a lot more kicking to touch. As a tall, heavy fellow I no longer jump and miss it but having watched this mess I feel no nostalgia for it.
