  • so can any chemE people answer a question for me?

so i watched like all of these videos and the chemistry used was all stuff from intro to chem (densities, combustion, stoichiometry) and most of the math only went as high as physics 1 and maybe a little bit of calculus. I noticed the main thing about this course was conceptualizing and critical thinking- does it stay like this more or less for the rest of the major?

And what exactly is the hardest part about this major?

  • HOLY SHIT THE DONT BliNK EPISODE OF DOCTOR WHO IS ON!

  • Can't wait for college

  • @AlanOwnsYou94 cant waith for the money to start raining....

  • great lecture

  • this reminds me of my ap chem teacher, and my us history teacher

  • Damn only white and asian people in that class. Just like my class at school.

  • I'm 28 and just starting this program, I heard it was the hardest major. Good.

  • @cowpacino i heard biomed is the hardest :/

  • @72dew no actually he's right, its ChemE

  • Why won't you laugh at his jokes! They're funny. People.. smh

  • great lecture!

  • Theo's going to fail this class

  • He said 69 at 41:16 and nobody laughed.

    What a different time.

  • @aceofspadez328 No, he didn't retire a long time ago. People just aren't so childish that they would laugh at such low-brow humour. And before you tell me there is, I'm not including people such as yourself.

  • My dad got his master degree from oregon state univ .....wish I was that smart.

  • Already bored...

    lol

    Just kidding.

  • I'm a Chemical Engineer at Cal State Long Beach. This professor knows his stuff and I appreciate his knowledge in all the disciplines of chemical engineering. Cool guy!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Did he say Chemical engineers made $59k average?

  • So what is chemical engineering exactly?

  • I wish my intro to chemical engineering class was as interesting as this one!! lol ... :(

  • Very nice! :)

  • He's a good professor for this. Most of my professors are dead serious or foreign

  • anyone know if this was recorded in '08?

    it seems a little dated

  • IM IN MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY

  • STUPID MACHINERY THROUGH CHEMICAL SEGREGATIONS, A+ OR A?

  • AMERICA IS RUN BY THE AVERAGE F-

  • that is sooo basic

  • is there any mass balance/energy/mechanical on this lectures?

  • Does anyone know where i can get that first chart of the "Interests"

  • Lecture starts at 20:35

  • @japs209 thanks

  • Does anyone know where to get a copy of that flowchart at the beginning?

  • I won't be going to Standford U, but I wish my future instructors in CE, calc, physics, etc. will be like this at whatever university I transfer to! He seems like a very engaging instructor!

  • oh god... this is where I'm going. I'm excited but... reasonably scared

  • Haha I'm in petroleum engineering.

  • very good

  • @PatzAkinZ lmaoo...do ya still higher???

  • woah... is this actually legit?

  • yeah not published, he will probably get more money out of this like this :D

  • chemical is the best!

  • im only 13 and i want to be a chemical or civil engeneer

  • you have to pay to get a professor's notes in the usa? thank god i leave in a european country

  • @hak525 It's spelled live.

  • @TheSjpatrik yeah, stupid mistake...

  • @hak525 O-o But now you guys pay for college. Its no different than buying a text book. Plus it is Stanford xD.

  • @JoesEpicAdventures I'm Scottish and our goverment pays for all university tuition fees.

  • Comment removed

  • @i2aymond I just looked that up and you didn't read the article correctly.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx I'm a mile below the border and i can't help but wish you'd kept hold of just a little more land >.<

  • @wedgeh05 Lol, well I think playing pass the parcel with Berick upon Tweed wasn't exactly good for it's citizens, I think they got massacred a few times.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx The government doesn't pay for it, the money was stolen through taxation from other people.

  • @jimmyt3411 What sort of mad conspiracy theory is that?

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx Thats what a tax is, it is stealing resources out of the economy and redistributing it to programs.

  • @jimmyt3411 Yes, that's how countries work, taxes pay for services. No tax = no services, no roads, no schools, no police, no law, no military defense, no libraries, no national parks... It's not stealing, and I fail to see the point you're trying to make.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx No, that's how organized crime works. Of course services, roads, schools, libraries, private parks and individual protection can exist without government. You are making the assumption that people cannot privately and collectively organize these things on their own. Taxation is stealing, it is taking your money by force and redistributing it. If I stole your money and told you that I'll be funding schools and libraries I would go to jail for that, why not government?

  • @jimmyt3411 So what are you proposing then? Anarchy? Some sort of warped and extreme capitalism? Yes, I assume without any sort of organisation, society as a whole could not exist. There's a quote that reads thus, "Why has government been instituted at all? Because the passions of men will not conform to the dictates of reason and justice, without constraint." I think that's true. Without government you don't even have any centralised currency, so the concept of money doesn't even exist.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx This conversation seems to boil down to the nature of man. Is he good or evil in a state of nature? I believe he is good, that he seeks good and truth in every belief he holds. What sets him back is his ignorance and mental capacity. Your parents, friends, teachers, and even enemies always commit to actions they think are good out of all the options they were given. Every opposing debater aims for truth and every opposing activist aims for justice.

  • @jimmyt3411 I sort of agree with you with this but I think that people are "good" based on nature and nurture, some has to be genetic but most children are essentially naive and must develop a concience, however people can be jaded in childhood to become "bad". Also even good people can act rashly due to emotions or having to make a split second decision.

  • @jimmyt3411 So if money doesn't exist you'd only be able to barter and trade goods with other people. "People cannot ... collectively organise these things on their own" - immvt3411 Government IS collectively organising things. In your anarchy system, lets say a criminal stole your tv, you have video evidence of his crime. What are you going to do? There is no police or court to sentence him and no prison for him to go to. He hasn't even broken any laws because there are none.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx Again, your assuming that the people cannot establish a monetary currency by themselves. Bartering limits the variety of goods that could be exchanged, this hurts everyone, therefore it is a common issue that will incentivize the people to get together and establish a common medium of exchange like gold, w/out government. I mean how else did government come about? It was the public that collectively organized and established a social contract.

  • @jimmyt3411 Yes, the public collectively organised and established a social contract. What's wrong with the goverment currency/way it is now? The States, UK(Scotland), our goverments aren't TOO different. I think dictatorship is stealing, and I think pure communism is stealing. However I also think that it's only decent that "weaker" members of society need a safety net, I don't think as sentient beings we should resort to social Darwinism, and finding that balance is why we need government.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx The problem with our paper currency here in the U.S. is that it is susceptible to being counterfeited, which it drastically has by the Federal Reserve. I am not advocating Social Darwinism, I too personally think that we should help one another, but not in a way that is stealing (tax). Giving should be out of your heart, not from force, and I think if we had a lot less taxes, people would be more willing to give to those who really need it

  • @jimmyt3411 Very well then, but I'm sure if there was a country wide vote of taxpayers, I bet they would vote to keep paying tax and supporting dis-abled people. I know that the Royal Banks in Britain are at a constant arms race with counterfeiters, and it's probobly the same in the US, but I'm not sure going back to gold crowns or doubloons is very practical idea, even if it would be pretty difficult to conterfeit solid gold. :P

  • @jimmyt3411 I'd just like to add that I do find healthy people who sponge off systems like paracites to be very frustrating.

  • @xWHITExEAGLEx Hey thanks for adding me. I would love to have debates with you as well, I have some many opinions that need to be checked by someone else. =)

  • @jimmyt3411 No problem :)

  • @hak525 lol do they h ave english 101 in europe?!

  • @rcmxfuk probably not..

  • Comment removed

  • @hak525 It's called capitalism... You're paying for your professors notes with taxes... sadly, we're heading in the socialist direction, too.

  • @rmeyerson2

So? what is wrong with a slightly socialist direction? good health care, good school system. People that want to a university can go to a university, instead of only having a rich dad that can afford it a university.

  • @Aaymaann First, even if it didn't work, we can't afford it. 2nd, It doesn't work. Capitalism has done the more to eliminate poverty than any other system. Having decentralized power for the school system is the best. Ever since Carter changed that, scores have plummeted.

  • @Aaymaann In a Capitalist society, people are always incentivized to produce, save and innovate, uplifting poverty levels. Education is bad in America because government has a monopoly control over it, if education was private, educators w/ a profit motive would be rewarded for their performance and bad educators would be penalized by going out of business. It is exactly the opposite here in the U.S., bad educators are being kept in the systems by rotten teachers' unions.

  • @hak525 Capitalism, our good friend Capitalism.

  • @hak525 lol, the poor guy probably doesn't even get any profit, 20$ is probably how much it costs to make a copy.

  • Quick Question im planning to go into Chemical Engineer Technology, now is the technology refers to the different types of technology i use in the field (ie factory)? And is there a high employment?

  • Is Chemical Engineering still a good field to go in?

  • @MetaIhead89 I'm not sure... it's depend on what you interest and what you like to study

    not for it's profit

  • he looks like a great teacher. using this video to see if chem e is something i'd like to pursue. (hopefully at stanford).

  • I believe that you can actually major in any engineering, watching these lecture, MIT, Stanford, Yale (yey for youtube major)

  • the first 2 mintues were already funny hahaha

  • His introduction made me laugh! If you're interested in nothing: IE!

  • @LAnumber27 You know what he means??

    he mean Industrial Engineering LOL

  • I selected in Chemical engineering. So plz tell me that is it good and important engineering ? If it is not then i try next year. Please tell me plz plz

  • wow this guy is awesome

  • Im excited to turn 19 and go to University of Toronto and start chemical engineering and go into nuclear work for the military.

  • @buddy767

Nah, you're just another kid who thinks he's bad ass because he wants to work with nuclear shit. 99.9% of Nuclear engineering deals with the stuff you see in a Nuclear power plant. Tactical Nukes are already engineered, as are megaton nukes.

  • @SecularTechnology your correct, when i found this out a few days ago i already started looking for a new career. can you tell me what most chemical engineering is in the career field?

  • @SecularTechnology Don't be angry.

  • @buddy767 good for u brotha

  • @buddy767 bright future!

  • maybe if this guy did a handstand about every ten minutes I could pay attention. So hard to follow with the subject being as it is. Though I hope my osmosis kicks in with all that he is saying.

  • hey i like that block dia. of selection of engineering branch can any one tell me where i can find it to download????

  • This seems like an interesting class... :)

  • @zenithsage What makes me laugh is people who are afraid of a little investigation.

  • if they had more of these videos i would never had to pay for school lol

  • Very enjoyable lecture, sir.

  • Comment removed

  • This is an interesting session. He is such a good professor with a lovely sense of humor.

  • @zenithsage Check out the appleman chart and learn something. -38C is required for any contrails. Compare with atmospheric sounding in your area.

  • @zenithsage You're an idiot. You can use contrail formation science from NASA / USAF and simple triangulation to definitively prove chemtrails.

  • @zenithsage You don't know me at all so stop pretending that you do. I discovered chemtrails using legitimate contrail science. Do you even KNOW about it?

  • @zenithsage Hahahaha what do you live in a hole? Look the fuck up... OMg ... lol

  • those people in the class are probably still studying because it takes atleast 4 years for chemical engineering! Thumps Up!!

  • This sounds like a great class, wish I could have gone to stanford LOL.

  • Damn, I wish i had lecturers like this when I was studying Chem Eng.

  • @momarjones Hey dude can you tell me a bit about chem engineering and how is it?

itll be a great help for choosing my major im kinda choosing between Nuclear and Chemical so yea Thanks in Advance!

  • @shackso Hey mate, chem eng is an awesome subject to major in. I'll admit that the 2nd year kinda sucked (thermodynamics is a biiiitch), but when you get into the final years, it gets hell interesting and challenging as well. The best thing about chem eng is that when you graduate, you can go into a bunch of different industries: Food, Oil & Gas , Mining & Processing, Pharmaceuticals (the list goes on). I did my internship in a major oil company. I highly recommend it! goodluck!

  • i want to go to Stanford University

  • Where can I access the syllabus that is described in this video?

  • In which semester is this course taught? Or if you are in Uni, in which Semester were you taught Material and Energy balance? Thanks in advance.

  • @youngnewtonian MB in first and EB and Simultaneous MB and EB in Fourth at NUST, Pakistan.

  • Please search for "chem trails" (no space) ASAP! I've filmed it lots myself... :(

  • There are more chemical engineers at Intel than there are structural engineers or desginers. Didn't know that.

  • Who the hell wnats to be a chemical engineer making 50 k/yr? you can make 3 to 4 times more income on easier stupid jobs, like sales or finance.

  • @einbischen You do realize that is the starting salary for brand new engineers. Once an engineer gets experience, his or her salary skyrockets to $90,000+

  • @einbischen Because chemical engineering and any other engineering is just about the only degree where you can find a job after just four years of schooling and they have the highest starting salaries out of any other profession. Just about every other degree, you need graduate school to find a job.

  • @TheVeryBestOfRap Nice. Good reason.

  • I'm a junior Chemistry major but I wanna get into chemical engineering. Is getting a non-thesis master's a good way?

  • sounds like nicholas cage!!

  • Can anybody here give me all the costs of different needs at Stanford? housing fee meal fee Parking fee lab fees athletic center fee library access fee international education fee student center complex fee records processing fee medical/student health fee i really need all this info! Thnx!
  • can i get a copy of that book?

  • The camera man is stupid.

  • can someone tell me whats the difference between a chemical and nuclear engineer?

  • it's gift to all chemi students.

    i'm enjoing engineering.

  • Wow. Really wished they had an Elec. Eng. channel seeing that that is what im actually more interested in. Personally i think Elect Eng's are far more valuable than chem eng's. . . .Let the debate begin

  • @Ayplus HA

  • What is that supposed to mean

  • what do u think its supposed to mean? haha ChEn>EE by a long shot.

  • Hundreds of millions of people died from disease. I'm pretty sure more people have saved from chemical discoveries and formulations than were saved by electricity. Value is a very subjective concept.

  • @Ayplus As knowledge expands there will be a field where knowledge of both is critical.

  • what about mech. eng.?

  • you don't get a book for your main coyrse in Stanford..unbelievable..so all this about this famous universities is just a myth..i really can't believe it..we get TWO books FOR FREE..

  • Comment removed

  • generally there are not a book for this class, the class is a recopilation of all career

  • Well that's not true..are you a student in Chem Eng in Stanford? Because generally there are many indroductory books in chemical engineering..i am telling you that we have been given TWO of them..

  • i have a Bachelor degree in Chem. Engineering but not in StandFord, this is not the best in Engineering... i did not know about those book sorry..

  • where did you get the degree?

  • i am studingg in greece by the way..where are you guys from?

  • no big deal..you must have also been given a introductory book but it may slipped your mind..

  • Stanford isn't known for its engineering.

  • yeaaah blud its all about UCL university college of LONDON , brush u man dem fool, we are fourth best in the world lol

  • Hi, am conducting a survey on how people use youtube to learn and I would love your feedback. It won't take more than 2 mins. You can find the link to the survey under the website section of my youtube profile page. Thanks so much for your help!

  • im down

  • why are you down? Is there any way I can pick you up? please let me know

  • don't feel down 88 think this guy is not a genius, he thinks he is, All he did was study to be what he is, and that's the difference between a homeless and a successful person.

  • im down meaning, I am willing to take part in the survey longkri suggested.

  • I am willing to participate, msg me

  • Anyone know where I can get that flow chart with the majors? Haha

  • excellent work!

  • diverse class

  • thaks 4 this intro. im watching u from saudi arabia

  • does anyone know where I can find the lecture notes and problem sets from this class if they are posted online by any chance?

  • I wish I could afford to go to Stanford

  • this is great! our classes are boring.. :( i like this guy! cool way to explain chem.eng. :)

  • This class is full of smart students...they laugh at teacher's lectures...hmmm, genius! =)

  • ps; that was a great personal story. Doing that no-adays and having a fee spirit means you get crushed.

  • G'day from Australia. I would just like to point out an error in the lecture: Mr Edwin Drake the oil pioneer is actually the man with the substantial beard on the right of the photograph, not Peter Wilson as you stated in the class.

    Cheers for the free class.
