  • @KittyKranker the small ring on most road bikes isn't that small, it's usually 34 or 39 teeth. It's also harder to change the front gears on a hill. It does depend on how gradual sloping the base is though. It also doesn't matter a few seconds at 125rpm spinning under load you can make quite good power, often equivalent or more than standing. I don't get on well with standing at any reasonable cadence though, it tires my legs quickly. 70rpm is okay on flat but you will bog down on a hill race

  • Another title for this video could've been 'Stating the bleeding obvious'.

If you're gonna make me sit through an ad to see your crap, make your crap worth watching please mate.

  • oh my you have trek madone :)

  • Lets face it - if you need to be told this stuff you shouldn't be allowed to chew gum un-supervised.

  • @ginganz13 Bit me. Not everyone knows this stuff. If you did, why did you watch this video.

  • @dead4fun - why does anyone stare at car accidents? When I saw the title I was intrigued, could there really be something I had missed - or are people really that dumb. Mostly its the latter - but it holds a morbid fascination.

  • something's wrong when the green guy rides off saddle

  • It helps alot up hill when you inject testosterone in the morning.

  • Gears?

  • @akimlaszek Cogs

  • livestrong rulz

  • The best way to get up a hill on two wheels is....buy a Hayabusa.

  • kevin livingston IS an actual former rider, just check his hairless legs....

  • Hi. I. Am. Kevin. Livingston. I. Am. A. Robot.

  • Wow. A lot of common sense. Change your gears folks!

  • Why do I have to watch an ad to see a two minute long video? They should only advertise on videos five minutes long or longer.

  • @SOPRANO1972 his upper body goes up and down, it's not still and that is not efficient

  • the thing I dont like about cycling, especially when climbing, is having to breathe exhaust fumes.

  • good grief, cycling today is full of techy nerds, just get out on the bike ride it lots get to know whats right and natural for you, give up drinking and smoking and look after your lungs! the more you do the better you'll be... end of.

  • @heantonstudios good words. im tryin to quit smoking and im trying to start cycling.

  • @OFFENSIVEWORDS I hope your able to overcome your smoking habbit! Most of the time people start it because of stress....I wish you could of found biking because you started cause its a great release for stress. Its a dirty habbit for your body too so thats good you'll give it up.

  • @IROCK80551 thanks

  • 1:17 In which situations are you going to brake going uphill in a race?

  • @baroh2413 I imagine if your in a crowded race and another rider swerves in front of you

  • I have a weird way of climbing: hands on the drops, out of the saddle and moving left and right by about 2 feet and in a big gear lol. A little unconventional but it wins me races :)

  • what if u have a one speed?

  • @NatureGnome Buy a new groupset...

  • @NatureGnome manage effort and not speed. excellently put.. that's a good question though, gn. walk or jog maybe, ha ha.

  • whats the name of this bike ? I want to by this bike

  • Indeed, that's what you recognize immediately. Besides, they're both too big to be good climbers. And big guys tend to climb in the sadle.

  • I can only do standing up well at cadences below 70 rpm. My bike practically never runs out of gears so I can sit down on even the steepest hills (1/3)

  • you will die going up hill with a fixed gear!

  • i wish i could afford a bike like this one. i have an old shwinn but i still love my bike. :)

  • dude in green too stiff, and his climbing motion is too forward/back instead of left/right he also does not follow the advice of keeping the foot at at the same angle, he uses too much calves, and his arms are not bent enough. I have short arms and my arms bend more than his.

  • at the end of the day, it isn't the guy who was the most efficient who wins the race, its the guy who did what he had to do, trashed legs or not.

  • Comment removed

  • since when is efficiency>speed?

  • @MHMarks Since always. If I'm riding 23mph on the flats I don't want to try and maintain 23mph on the hills, it's not efficient and will quickly destroy the legs. Keeping your power output steady throughout a race will always give the fastest time.

  • @MHMarks when you run out of puff....

  • i thought it was a joke when i saw the name....

  • he needs some tips to be a better presenter! BAM!!!

  • @simonddavies I actually laughed out loud there.

  • lol how you cycle uphill is you get a bike and cycle uphill and when it hurts you keep on going...

  • Good tips but those hills are pretty weak compared to the ones i encounter out here.

  • @flatvidz Same here mate, I cycle in Wales and the hills are really steep.

  • Shouldn't you keep your same gear while going up? Why not just power climb up, using your momentum gained from the downhill?

  • @DMB206 What happens if you are coming off the flats? Trying to maintain to power up the climb is fine but your cadence will drop if you don't shift.

  • @DMB206 That's great if the hill isn't very long, but after a little bit your going to loose your momentum.

  • dont you want to keep your chain strait? i would switch the rear derailer cogs first THEN change the chain wheel gears. i under stand it would be little time that the chain would be slanted, but theres a way to have it strait the whole time..

  • Most of these tips are instincts.

They come to riders like *snaps my fingers* that.

  • I have the exact same running shoes as you lol

  • That bike is so nice.

  • @Flabberjab it's not about the bike!

  • @Flabberjab frame only

  • @MrIrishlogic lol. Not too far from the truth as it happens.

  • At 1:07 what kind of bike is that in the front?

    Carvelo?

  • @bongborin im thinking that it looks like a cervelo p1

  • @ajxcman

    yes it is. =D

    I just check on google.

    Thank you.

Anyone selling a Trek road bike around $200?

  • @bongborin You couldn't find a road bike from Trek that cheap.

  • nice video. but shouldnt all this be intuitive. and those guys look like they are climbing fairly fast.

  • Easier with low gears, light bike and not being fat - signed Captain Obvious

  • im 5'7 and weigh 150 what kind of cycling bike would be good for me??

  • @DV8hc size small 17"

  • not using that onj the hills i go on lol

  • He still shave his legs

  • Wow, now Contador doesn´t have a change against me:)

  • Many obvious points, but fixing the feet/lower leg angle was new to me.

Didn't pay attention to it, that's for sure.

  • @ave2timeslip I guess that there is a mistake there. In order to achieve a more circular pedalling, you need to change that angle...

  • @abejorromostachon absolutly

  • I found that the best way to improve my climbing is to ride up longer hills more often.

  • raod bikes could go up hill right??

  • who the hell doesnt know to shift gears before the hill?

the only thing i got out of this video was : keep smooth pedal strokes.. which i already knew.

and what are those reflectors doing on that bike?

  • @zach00attack Maybe so he isn't killed while riding?

  • @unsczombie pffft nobody uses reflectors. just ride visible. and if you're riding at night THEN u can use lights.

  • that guy in the green is just keeping his bike straight so he puts all his power into going forwards.

  • Loving that reflector on the wheel...

  • great video

  • hmm, my way of riding uphill, as fast as I can :)

  • I feel for you :( Did you get it back?

  • These tips all sound pretty obvious to me... maybe because bikes are more popular in Europe, maybe because I live in the mountains

  • guy in the green has some really weird climbing technique, check his upper body and arms when hes out of the saddle. thats not very efficient

  • @Change438 you really think you can do better?

  • @13tarmac pretty sure, I'm a fairly good climber. at least I know I have better technique than him, but I cant really know obviously you cant really judge the grade of the hill... but you can see quite clearly, just compare the arm movement of the two riders, white vs green. its way too stiff, and a very inefficient technique

  • @Change438 I disagree. The guy in the white is more inefficient as he's losing power in the side sway/wobble. The green guy is more controlled and all his power is going into the cranks. I think his arms/body are fine, they look stiff because he isnt swaying when infact they're prolly quite limber.

  • @downfader2 nope, it takes more energy and power to do that, just try it yourself, it feels completely unnatural. Check out guys from the tour, and other pro cyclists, you wont find any of them not rocking their bikes when they are out of the saddle. efficiency up hill is all about staying relaxed, and I feel, especially when I'm just grinding up the climbs yanking up with my thighs especially, that its good to almost throw yourself up the hill, and maintain that momentum

  • @Change438 At the same time though, you don't see track cyclists doing "the wobble"

  • @destructicon500 look, I'm tired of replying. track cycling is totally different from climbing, just please look up videos on climbing technique, dont take my word for it... if you raced bikes you would understand

  • @Change438 No you're right I wasn't really paying attention to the context of the video. Climbing is different, I thought we were just talking about "the wobble" in general like on flat sprints

  • @Change438 Yeah, he's very rigid. Must burn a lot of energy trying to keep the bike from rocking. However, at the end of the day, it comes down to comfort. Everyone is different and it seems to be working fine for him, which is really all that matters.

  • @Change438 Yeah you're right. He's really stiff

  • @Change438 Really not efficient at all. I think he's not comfortable out of the saddle. Some riders have a very difficult time riding out of the saddle.

  • @Change438 Precisely, stay relaxed.

  • @Change438 I 've noticed too! Its like he is not using any of his arm power or leverage!

  • @Change438

It looks weird only because he's in great shape ie he doesnt use his upper body to move the bike back and forth because he doesn't need to.

You're trying to move the bike forward not side to side.

The green dude is barely even trying. If the hill were much steeper he'd probably do that but not here...he;s flying up the hill with minimal effort.

  • @Change438 He doesn't move it nearly enough

  • @Change438 Each person has their own style, if that works for him then he should use it

  • @samliffe that "style" would work for anyone, it would also make them a terrible climber

  • That noise could be your bottom bracket !

  • i hate product placement by trek :-)

  • First loose your Chain wheel Remove it from ue bike. Clean and remove mud particle. Again lubricate it and install and tighten it throughly.

I have a Shimano Tigra Hollowtech2 had the same proble i just tighten the Ceank arm screw and the problem was solved.

  • my bike crank area makes a noise every revolution, when i am going up hills - (putting strain on the bike).. does anyone know how i could stop the noise?? :(

    tighten / loosen anything?

  • Does it squeak when you turn over the crank? I had the same problem on my bike and it ended up being a dry seal (no lubrication).

  • Could be your BB. If it's FSA they have a tendency to loosen (on the lower end models), in which case it needs to be tightened again. Worst case - a bearing is cracked. Also, make sure your chainrings are in good shape and even lubricate your seatpost, which is surprisingly the cause of a number of squeaks.

  • could be something simple like needing more lube.

Or something more complicated like bent chainrings, chain, bb or pedal bearings, etc...

  • I had this and it turned out that my pedal was too tight on one side.

  • Get a different bike for steep hills. that bike is light but has a crappy first gear.

  • i think it's because if you flex your foot on the down / up strok you are using tibialis anterior / soleus / grastrocnemeus which are weaker muscle groups than the more proximal groups such as the quads and the hamstrings, as well as a littleof the ileo-psoas.

  • Why the foot has to be in the same position ?

I ask, because I don't think I do that and I have never had any problems, I guess !! But you sounded pretty confident on what you said, so I am very curious !!!

  • I think it's for clipless pedals (although I'm no expert in this area)

  • Actually that bike has normal pedals. I have normal pedals. My personal preference is to pull the pedals back up by pointing my feet to the ground and using the muscles in the back of my legs (leg bending muscles whatever they're called)

  • I rode many bikes, and I rode a couple that didn't fit properly. As a result, my foot changed position every stroke. Every time i rode like that, my ankles were numb for the rest of the day, inflamed achillies tendon.
