The dwarf was known as 'Cheatum' (the 'one-eyed midget' as he was dubbed due to the eyepatch). Both Cheatum and Hornswoggle are two separate people. Besides, Hornswoggle would have to have been a mere 6 years old when this footage was shot, so it's definitely not him :)
goddamn...I remember this shit....It was pretty cool back then because I didn't know it was that ridiculous let alone predictable, but now...what the fuck am I watching? and why is there a midget involved?
The problem wasn't that it landed on Coal Miner's Glove. The problem is that it was even on the wheel. Surely something better could have been put on there in it's place.
jake said on hes own dvd that the wheel was not fixed and it legitimately fell on coal miners glove and they had no choice but to do that crappy match-talk about crap luck!!!!
@Pulpedtoafiction31 Watts was the worst promoter NWA/WCW had. He blamed Dusty for some of their problems and didnt listen to those who knew best. He may have been a good wrestler but as a promoter he sucked.
@eltornado1978 See living in Buffalo, NY I never had accessto seeing anyother promotions except WWF when I was a kid. So Ihave no idea how good or bad or what a SOB he may have been. I think it maybe a general problem with those Old School wrestlers turned promoters, who really didnt know how to really work well in the in the 1980s the way McMahon and Crockett did. Plus they couldnt work well together. I mean look at Superclash 3. They had something good there, but couldn't play well together.
do they have it planned when it comes to the match or actually let the results come from the wheel. they could have had a better match type then the one they did. I think some of the matches were there just because they sounded good but wcw never planned on having them.
OK, from the first two minutes, I'm going to go out on a limb and say there's a wheel of some sort involved and that said wheel might be spinning. Of course, they only took TWO MINUTES to try to establish that, so I can't be sure.
The thing is jake roberts is younger than the undertaker,if not for the drugs and boose he could have been one of the greatest heels in the biz to this day.
Roberts is ten years older than taker, but roberts is a crack head. I was into the wwf when I was a kid and loathed wcw, but I remember almost getting exited about this when I saw it on tv, sounds cool, but this is terrible, the guy at 3:40 blows me away!
Apart from the "eh?" moment with the lightning bolts between the eyes, and a disappointingly stiff and characterless performance from Sting, I actually think this was well put together. The set design and the extras managed a decent homage to Mad Max 3, and there was some skilful use of shadow in there.
Then you have Jake...sober (thank god), smouldering with charisma, and delivering his lines better than most actors, let alone wrestlers. And when Jake's on form, it's ALWAYS worth watching.
@666rocko : He still could. I'm sure it has been suggested. However Hollywood is looking for anyone with real acting talent anymore. Only phonies who will do whatever they are told.
Thoughts: "Spin the wheel, make the deal" tha's too many syllables nobody would chant that, it just sounds stupid, since when was jake roberts a biker? this is the predecessor to raw roulette, Jake roberts could have been much bigger if he wasn't so self destructive, the guys who make it make it through that burnout phase to get to the next level while guys like Mr perfect, jake, rvd,Scott Hall, etc. shit out before they realize their full potential, and of course really? laser beams?
This was taken directly from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome "Two men enter, one man leaves". The movie even included a wheel spun to determine the consequence after Max broke a contract.
What the hell is with WCW and all their mini movies promoting big matches during this time period. Spin the Wheel Make the Deal mini movie. Does anyone remember the mini movie they did when Sting and Bulldog wrestled Sid and Vader? How about the Sting/Vader strap match at Superbrawl 3?
To quote from the book "Wrestlecrap": You can talk seedy all you want but unless you have a one-eyed midget named Cheatum, you're just talking out of your ass.
you just have to love Jack Roberts he was the best in the business. He still could be a valuble Asset to the business if he could get his personal life straightened out. not in the ring of course but teaching the young stars the Psychology of the business and how to work the crowd. His promos were great.
Jim Ross is the best announcer ever today, his history and knowledge of the wrestling business is second to none. he is the most respected Announcer not just in WWF or WCW but entire business. No one one but The Late Gordon Solie (who Ross was a fan of) could call a match better then Jim Ross all the wrestlers and non wrestlers in the business reaspect him. both Gordon Solie and Jim Ross are considered the best in the bussiness.
The cable company I was on at the time accidentally aired this BEFORE the match that set up the Sting - Roberts battle at Havoc. I kid you not. Boy, that spoiled the surprise.
No, Hornswoggle was born in 1986 so he would have only been 6 when this happened. This was in 1992. Jake went to WCW after his WWF contract ended after WrestleMania VIII. He had a one shot feud in WCW with Sting and then he was gone again, probably due to his "personal demons". Then in 1996, he returned to the WWF. Within a year, he was gone again.
Jake left WCW because he was never able to sign his original contract. He had a 90 day no-compete clause after leaving Vince and before it was up, Bill Watts took over WCW and changed the contract making it worth a lot less. Watts and Jake hated each other so Jake did the Sting angle then quit.
I'd love to know what the Death Match and Mystery Match would have been. Isn't the whole point of the Spin The Wheel, Make The Deal malarky that it's a mystery match?
Or is this a DDP vs. David Flair-style "Mystery on a Pole" type affair? First one to find the cryptic clue has an advantage in solving the puzzle?
.... I could have SO been a booker in WCW in 1993.
The possibility of that may well still exist. Both WWE and small promotions are looking for talented help to put them on "Must see TV" again, like the NWO, for example.
Jake made this video good. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Ireally get a kick out of all the old legends from way back being there though. It's like wait weren't you all bitching McMahon made wrestling all entertainment? Then you see them all in WCW watching this "beautiful" piece of work.
I remember watching the PPV as a kid and hated the wheel the coal miners glove match. Should have landed on something more exciting like a barbed wire match or something else.
Damn, and I thought the promo's Jake had with Warrior back in WWF were lame 'cause the Warrior's shit acting. . . This beats it. The laser eyes really killed it. . .
Though, I did like that one bit Jake said:
"We both go in the ring- one man comes out, the other, well. . .no"
Again, poor Jake has to carry a shitty promo to make it semi-believable. . .
WCW had some of the worst concept matches.Spin The Wheel,White Castle of Fear,Thundercade,Chamber of Horrors,Wargames,Battle Bowl,Tower of Doom,Bunkhouse Stampede.I liked WCW,but these matches were kinda lame.I did like World War 3 Though.
I gotta disagree. I really liked the Spin the Wheel Make the Deal concept & wished they would have brought it back, especially later on when the NWO showed up. War Games was another great one (especially the 1992 War Games--perhaps the bloodiest match in wrestling). I also liked Battle Bowl, but the way they had enemies almost always being partners showed how fake it was.
I liked the matches they had in 1994 a lot (Chicago Street Fight & Bunkhouse Match at Spring Stampede 94, Bad Street Bully & Texas Bullrope matches at Slamboree '94, Thundercage match at Superbrawl IV, the Marquis of Queensbury Cup matches on the 5/94 WCW Worldwide shows & the May Mayhem matches--Street Fight, Tuxedo Match, I Quit Match, Strap Match--also during the 5/94 Worldwide shows).
The White Castle of Fear IIRC was just a Strap match between Sting & Vader in Superbrawl III--awesome match
This was in the top 5 of crappiest promos for a wrestling match IMHO. Want to see worse? Search for the Bash at the beach promo for Sting and Davey boy Smith VS Sid Viscous and Big Van Vader (or was he just Vader by then?).
mmmikeyxx was right, Sting couldn't act. Jake the snake always did play a great bad guy! He could act soooo sinister it was almost scary. Even Jake and Sting probably thought something like "Who the fuck thought this crap up??".
LMAO...BEACH BLAST, BEACH BLAST, BEACH BLAST, BEACH BLAST!!! POWER BOMB, POWER BOMB, POWER BOMB, POWER BOMB, POWER BOMB!!! Haha...that promo was GOD awful! You're absolutely right
The dwarf was known as 'Cheatum' (the 'one-eyed midget' as he was dubbed due to the eyepatch). Both Cheatum and Hornswoggle are two separate people. Besides, Hornswoggle would have to have been a mere 6 years old when this footage was shot, so it's definitely not him :)

suckyamomma30 3 years ago
Not a bad job from Jake. Sting on the other hand has less characterization than Chucky did when he showed up.

12 of the most brutal matches in wrestling history? Obviously, WCW never heard of an exploding barbed wire match

Cheatum. He was in all the mini-movies.
LoafOfPint 3 years ago
yeah it could have been a better match than the coal miners glove match
slezy108 3 years ago
why is spin the wheel a bad concept. if u hink raw rouletee is good then u gotta like spin the wheel
larrthrosphe 3 years ago 3
It was mainly bad because what it landed on (the coal miner's glove match). :/
I would also say something about the mini movie, but it was 92, so I guess that was to be expected. :P

Jake was too good for the fuck up that was WCW
feckyoo2 3 years ago
it would have been a better match if it wasn't a cold-miner's glove match. that was pointless after all of this build-up.

Goddamn, I remember watching this way back in the day. I was confused as to what Jake Roberts was doing in WCW, but man did he play a great villain.

Wargames was an amazing match concept and as for chamber of horrors well it was amazing......amazingly funny that is :P

Wow, it now seems so weird to see Jim Ross holding a WCW mic.

LOL at 2:30 to 2:35.
mmmikeyxx was right, Sting couldn't act. Jake the snake always did play a great bad guy! He could act soooo sinister it was almost scary. Even Jake and Sting probably thought something like "Who the fuck thought this crap up??".
