  • how often did u have to clean your Texas holey rock. I have a Them in my tank and the collect a lot of algae.

  • I used the holey rock for about 6 months and they never grew algae. I am now using Large Cobble stones and they have algae growing on them b/c i got brighter lighs and i keep them on longer. I encourage growth of algae b/c it allows the MBUNA to graze through the day and it creates oxygen and they will consume the Nitrates in your water. If you are having a problem with algae and you dont want it you might shorten the time you have the lights on. Thanks for the comp. Good Luck!

  • yea I like that rock you have too. How much does it cost per lb?

  • The rocl I have in here goes for about $2.50 per lb here at my LFS but I get all of my materials from my local Rock Yard. There its about $.15 a lb. You should check to see if there is a rock yard where you are. I even got my new sugar sand there. Its $26.00 at my LFS for 20lbs but I get the exact same stuff from the Rock Yard for $10 for 100 lbs. If you cant get it in your town that cheap let me know ill ship some to you for super cheap from here. If interested send me a private message.

  • Wow that is cheap, I think I have a rock yard nearby I'll have to check it out and see what they have, thanks

  • nice tank, I want to upgrade to a 75 gallon cichlid tank, have any tips?

  • Thanks for the comp. 75 gallon tanks are wonderful. I'm not too sure what you have right not but sand is a must. They love to dig and make caves. It's always a good idea to OVER filter your tank especially if you overstock your tank. I highly recommend a canister filter like the one I have on my 75 gallon. It's a RENA XP4. They are pricey but worth it.

  • Make sure you have ALOT of hiding places for the Mbuna to hide and have their terretories, Texas Holey Rock like these are good rock to use but its up to you what kind of rock you use. I just changed my substrate to "sugar fine sand" and Large cobble stones. I'll post a vid this weekend of my all new arrangement.
