Bouchard was never the same after that thrashing. The Habs waived him and he hung around for parts of four seasons (three + 1 game) with Washington but he was never feared again. He was a monster for the Laval Jrs. though. The late seventies were a great time to be a young hockey fan.

In fighting, its a proven fact that size does indeed matter,....but only to a certain degree. I watched this fight as it happened 32 years ago. Did you know Peirre Bouchard and Stan Johnathon appeard at a old timers hockey game for charity? The two men are friends these days. In a radio interview with Pierre Bouchard, Stan Johnathon admitted Bouchard was the toughest fight he ever had. I greatly admire Stan Johnathon for saying that. Like I said, these are two very good men.

Having said that, the Jonathan-Walker fight was a DRAW -- true, Walker landed a couple more punches, but that's offset by the fact that Stan upended Kurt with the single leg takedown. Ending up on top is a factor in who takes the decision. Furthermore, if the referees hadn't intervened to save him, Kurt would have gotten his head beaten into the ice -- check out Jonathan's fight with Mel Bridgman and you'll see what I mean.

For what? to see the one time Jonathan was dominated in a fight in his entire career where he was at the end of a long shift, and didn't have a scratch on him when it was over? Gillies was the heavyweight champ at the time and was 8 inches taller and 40 pounds heavier than Stan, but it wouldnt matter. That fight was an anomily. Behn Wilson was very similar to Gillies, and Jonathan beat Wilson. You can't judge a fighter because of 1 loss. Hell, Probert got KO'd by Todd Ewen. Nobody KO'd Jonathan!

What are you talking about? Jonathan won both Nilan fights, & I'll give Walker the win against Stan, but there was no domination. Walker took him down quick and Stan got right back up and they traded some good lefts, then Stan went for the leg lift as the linesmen were breaking it up.
Probert got DOMINATED by Ken Belanger and KO'd by Ewen. Hell, I saw Bob Sweeney cut Big Jim McKenzie very badly in a fight-but that doesnt make Sweeney tougher. Jonathan also landed NOTHING when Bouchard was down.

Pound for pound, Jonathan was the best fighter in NHL history, not just for his amazing win percentage vs. legitimate heavyweights, but also for the damage he inflicted on opponents. True, Gillies steamrolled him, but Gillies weighed 220 vs Stan's 175. How did Gillies do against same size or bigger opposition -- Wilson, Byers, Brown, Probert, McSorley? Not too well. And Terry O'Reilly gave Gillies the most one side beatings of Clarke's career. NOBODY is undefeated!

This was about the only thing Boston won against Montreal back then. Montreal made Boston their personal bitch(and still do come playoff time). 4 cups in a row, 2 against the "Big Bad Bruins", and 1 other they took out Boston in the semis. Out of their 24 cups, probably half of them have been against Boston in the finals, or they took them out on the way. BTW, Bouchard has 5 cup rings. And Jonathan has how many? Bouchard was never the same after that thrashing. The Habs waived him and he hung around for parts of four seasons (three + 1 game) with Washington but he was never feared again. He was a monster for the Laval Jrs. though. The late seventies were a great time to be a young hockey fan.

Exactly. That fight really affected him. I remember watching that game on TV (I think it was Game 4 in Boston). I had also gone to the Montreal Forum to see Game 2. Lafleur scored the winner in overtime in that one, if memory serves.
You are right, it was a fun time to be a young hockey fan. A few years ago I met Guy Lafleur at an autograph signing event. He agreed that it was an exciting time.
