  • @oker59, It shouldn't take you three posts to say he is underrated. One sentence would have done the trick.

  • It's sad that everyone thinks James Burke is the end all; his biggest contribution is showing that the major historical events of mankind were science/technologically dependent. Yet, most of those watching James Burke's connections and Day the Universe changed are not scientific humanist.

    James Burke's contributions are still underrated; but, he's hardly the end all. It's a bit like those who think Van Halen is better than listening to Led Zeppelin,

    Cream, John Mayall's bluesbreakers . . . ;

  • The analogy is inexact in the fact that James Burke's scientific history never hit home properly. It's kind of like Jacob Bronowski fans who listen to his talking about the fact that analogy underlies both mathematics and poetry; they run with this like a new principle of relativity; hurray! we don't have to take science seriously! We can act like religion and art are as good as mathematics!

    I've tried to communicate to James Burke my findings; but, he's impossible to talk to; either he's

  • either he's done intellectualy, set in his ways of thinking, or he has the wrong friends speaking in his ears.

  • Yes, many important inventions and discoveries require the knowledge of more that one field. We need inventors and scientists who know a little about dozens of different fields.
