Really weird seeing them walk on the ground, & so many of them. They're around here too, but not so many of them, & I haven't ever managed to get close enough to the nest to really learn much about them. Neat birds, though. When they fly they always seem like a paper airplane someone put too big a coin in the nose of, but they manage to get where they're going, & come back, so good for them. Neat birds.
they're Quaker parrots. we have them around where i live in chicago! they r a bit bigger than parakeets, and make giant nests that all fit together into one colony. you can actually buy them at some pet stores.
@loverofmythology Quakers are illegal to keep as pets in New Jersey where I live because they adapt very well to the outside and can become invasive to native species. They are so cute!
@kpenguins48 ik! they r adorable! we have flocks of them around here, and it just started ff with a male and female! they've been here since b4 i was born.
They are also called "Monk Parakeets". Several colonies live in some of the larger cities like New York City, Chicago, and Cincinnati!! They can withstand the cold very well.
yeah, parakeet is a very general term. This is a quaker parakeet. most people believe that the Budgerigar is Parakeet, though it is. Parakeet is not the actual name, just the group name. Parakeet just means a group of small, unrelated parrots with some having long tail feathers.
These birds have established colonies allover north America. Thyere quite cold hardy. They are even considered a "nuisance" in areas where grain is grown, and are usually "eradicated", which is a PC way of saying KILLED. Theyre one of the few parrot species that nests communally.
They havent mutated or anthing haha, these are parakeets, there are several different kinds, i cant think of the name of these at the moment, but they are parakeets.
Although Americans typically use the word "parakeet" to refer only to budgerigars there are actually several other species known by that name. The Quaker parrot is one of them, and is commonly referred to as a "monk parakeet."
Thanks for setting them straight, 221b. Saying "parakeet" is like saying "parrot." Both words are very non-specific. I wish my fellow budgie-owning Americans would learn this.
cute! i used to have one! he was named buddy. but he became to teritorial so we gave him to a lady who works at the zoo. (we made sure she wasnt an animal murderer!)
Monk Parakeets are gorgeous. There is a flock at Hamonassett Beach in CT, I saw. Unfortunatly you can't catch or own them here (I would love one!). They are from S. America and can live up here because their nests are well insulated and can live in mountains with similiar weather as New England. I did a massive research paper on them if anyone needs to know anything about them I'd be glad to help you. They nest on electric poles and tend to cause fires making electric companies angry though.
lol I used to have a parakeet that escaped from someone's house. (maybe) so our best freinds found him but couldn't keep him so they gave him to us. we put up found parakeet signs everywhere and no one claimed him. so we kept him for about a year and then we had to give him away to my aunt that also has a parakeet. Both of these birds were becoming lonely and when we gave "wallace the parakeet" to my aunt, they both became happy again.
beardsley park and zoo in bridgeport as well as gorgeous st. marys by the sea is the home to these monk parakeets a strange phenomenom but they know something we didnt know for a log time--bridgeport connecticut is a great place to live work and play
They originally came from one of the NYC airports, escaped I think, from JFK years ago when a crate broke and they escaped. Bred in great numbers ever since, surviving the hardsh northeast winters quite well..
Thoes are not parakeets they are Quaker Parrots

They're normal sized quaker parakeets. Look puffed up due to cold. Parakeets have long tails. Parrots have short ones. Nice video.

can you tame them if you catch them?
frisco448 1 year ago
maybe.. but its better to keep a pair..then wait until the female has eggs and once they hatch..you could tame the chicks.

These birds will fill up the nitch vacated by the Carolina Parakeet. They are also in New Orleans IIANM.
