  • They must have been in a rush.

  • Wow this song is my audition for jazz band... Oh my.

  • @lilmissmuzak Hahaa same :P

  • @lilmissmuzak Look up "Michael & Randy Brecker w/ WDR Big Band- Some Skunk Funk" It's a lot slower and easier to play off of.

  • This is totally apeshit!! Definitely my favorite version of this happy tune.

  • I love Randy's look @ 3:07, as if saying "how dare you, I could never play that"! :-P

  • Moments like 5:29 make me so happy. These guys jam and kill it, but they are so down to earth! Love it!

  • Michael Brecker lives.

  • George, that's hilarious! I miss Michael! Fabulous comping by you on this!

  • George, that's hilarious! I miss Michael!

  • wow mike stern quite the band

  • its so fast & great damn!!

  • Wayyyyyyy to fast. Viirtuosity came in and groove/funk went through the window!

  • @indaplace2b It's not the cleanest rendition, but I don't think there are many people capable of this feat in the world. If you want something that grooves a bit easier, listen to the version live in Barcelona. Sometimes, musicians have some fun when performing. It's funny--- a musical (well, in terms of resting) joke. I mean, listen to the audience's reaction. I mean, Randy's pause at 5:30 and Randy and Michael fooling around in the bars traded starting at 6:18? Brotherly bonding at its best.

  • too slow

  • Did slow tempo died?

  • He used a mark 6 (I think a 5 digit) with a silver mark 6 neck with a guardala mouthpiece, selmer ligature and lavoz reeds right?

  • @BenRodenburg No clue brotha!!!! But this is some SERIOUS SHITTTTTTTTTT!!!!! One of the best thing's I've every heard!!!!!

  • @bvk123 so sick

  • @GordonEveryDeuce the sickest chord at 0:04

  • @bvk123 C7#9 :]

  • @BenRodenburg right. lavoz med

  • does anyone know Michael's setup? he's using a neck from other instrument.....maybe a SBA neck on a M6 body?

  • FWIW, this tune is so fast because Mike and Dennis had a little thing going; every night Mike would sort of challenge Dennis's manhood: "Well, that was sort of fast, I guess that's fast enough, I'm sure you're doing your best...", and Dennis would just smile his little smile and wait until the next night. I'm sure we played this faster a week after this was filmed.

  • @GeorgeWhitty when you say Mike do you mean Stern or Brecker?

  • the pace of this version is a jazz funk hit-and-run

  • how awesome is this?!

  • This.. is shit :S

  • i guess they were in a hurry to get somewhere?

  • god why is this so damn slow?

  • This is way faster than the original recording. Speed does not always enhance.

  • Mike's reed probably disintegrated long before his solo :) these guys were so amazing!

  • Pelle d'oca.....Micheal Brecker UN GRANDE!!!....davvero un peccato ..che non ci sia più.... :'(

  • Incredible speed on this version ! Great musicians !

  • tempo = madness! ^^

  • This guy Mike is an alien hybrid...out of this world.

  • that reed probably caught fire at one point.......

  • simply.., amazing, you were the king micheal

  • Jesus.

  • Synth sound sounds dumb, but everything else about this is fucking holy shit amazing what the fuck.

  • @Parvenu333 It was probably the best stuff available back then... still awesome players tho...

  • 6:20, lol!

  • @saxophonefreak101 look at Randy @ 6:20-6:22 :-)

  • ....crazy tempo....

  • oh my god...THIS IS SO GOOD...i can't stop listening to it!!!!!!!!!

  • la madonna che potenza !!!!!

  • Wow, that face that Randy makes 1:04! LOL

  • demolidor.

  • Randy looks like such a hillbilly! ahaha!

  • smokin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DAMN this measures at 350BPM!

  • Slicklick at 4.59!

  • youre right:-)

  • also at 5:14

  • Were is bass player james genus!! I can here him...would've been nice to see him in action.

  • so faaaaaaaaaaast!!

  • Too fast, all the funk is lost

  • 5:31 leave it to Randy to excite the listener by not playing

  • He certainly exploits the " less is more" adage until nothing becomes everything.. Hey, did Randy have contempt for his bro? I've seen lots of vids and it seems Randy is always looking down his nose at Micheal Is it bad nerves? Did he feel threatened ? Randy sometimes looks like he's competing Both these guys are in the top 1% of " ever on earth" Lose the Elmer Fudd and Bert and Ernie look though. Look @ Stern Thats how people look on stage.
  • The drop out at 5:30 is both hilarious and completely funky. Further proof that space, too, is music.

  • @Djangoblackbird : Miles, is this you?

  • whenever i dont feel like practicing my sax i just watch a video like this.... and i realize how far away i am from these guys in skill! thats inspiration

  • Believe me if you are a sax player you would understand the intricacies of MB's playing...much as I would of Randy's if i were a trumpet player. Both absoltely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah retarded as in, DAMN.... That's retardly redunculious

  • fun tune to play

  • Randy's solo is so groovin and chill.

  • Terry wishes he played this good on Heavy Metal Be-bop. Granted, in it's day it was top, but Dennis puts that to shame by todays standards.

  • Holy Fuck

  • it is really awesome.....but Terry on "Heavy Metal BeBop" is the most amazing drumming in the history of mankind! This tune and "SPONGE" are so OUTSIDE IT'S FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!

  • listen to the bassist going ape shit in the fast bits... poor man

  • The way you guys keep talkin' it's like you never heard a group play a song faster live than recorded. Sure they've done some live takes at recorded speed, but have you listened to Miles's live cuts of So What? They make Impressions sound slow!

  • ah way to much compression

  • whats with the harmonics(good example at 2:40)?who else hears thet?is it on purpose?

  • i think its on purpose i mean come on its michael brecker what else do you expect =]

  • He's playing chromatically, which is causing the harmonizer effect to get a little goofy. However, I'm sure he was aware that's what would happen, and probably did it with that in mind, to create a little 'outside' effect, just like when he planes ideas around chromatically.

  • quelle version!!!!!! michael brecker au top!!!!! ça dépote!!!

  • It is a little too fast, but compared to some versions of Charlie Parker doing Salt Peanuts....????

  • I agree, it is too fast. Slower versions do groove more.

  • unbelievable! straight favourite.... listen to Mr Genus laying down phenomenal basslines - and Stern the best....! What I would have given to be there....

  • Absolutely incredible. Randy cannot believe his brother plays so amazing. So clean!!

  • This version is a little too fast, sounds like bebop, Still love it though

  • This version is way too fast. The groove is lost. Good for playing fast to though.

  • I'm speechless...

  • Sweet Jesus.....That's SOOO fast!!!! and Michael's solo almost made me make a mess in my pants!!! PRICLESS MUSIC!!!

  • sweet god

  • wow thats fast and tight! The looks from Randy are priceless!

And Michael as always unbelievable. I certainly miss him :(

  • fuckin greased that solo....damn! Randy was ok lol

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Comment removed

  • fuuuuuuck man =O they are playing it sooooooo fast =|

  • I think I just came a little bit after hearing Michael's solo........

  • michael, we miss you.

  • @albertrombone

he was my God when I was young tenor player

  • @albertrombone

yes we do, he had a short stay here and he blew everything and everyone away, he was the one and only, the greatest...and such a nice guy, a wonderful human beeing.

  • It would be fun to see Pat Martino or Frank Gambale do this tune on guitar with this line up.

  • Hehe truck horn @ 1.44

    Nice multiphonic, that one..

  • Hey forget what I said about 12 notes, the point is... These guys kick ass! It's art, the final rule of music theory is to forget everything you've learned and just play!! It's music, so love it for what is, no analyzing required!! Have fun...positive vibes my fellow musicians! Life is too short already to over analyze something as cool as music, which none of us understand where it comes from anyway.

  • Comment removed

  • Can you explain this a little more please? Because from what I'm reading you sound completely wrong. For example, the last century of western music has experimented with many different scales containing more than twelve notes. Anyway, this is all beside the point docholiday is trying to make, but your comment is just not accurate.

  • yes ive found that there has been times when more than 12 tones were used, and in india there was something like a 34 notes but those never went anywhere, the small changes between quarter notes are so small the intervals just arent colorful enough for us to hear. The scales played on those 12+ toned ranges can be replicated on our 12 tone range. there is one that we cant but there is so much possible with our scale, it doesnt really matter how many tiny steps there are.

  • Dukoff?

  • Not Dukoff... but, Guardala

  • There's only 12 notes in music? I think not...

  • What do you mean by that? Western music have only twelve notes within the octaves. If you look in the midleeast and asia you get a bunch more notes of course. Twelve notes still...

    Best, Sandemose

  • I agree with Sandemose ... I think why people are generally impressed with stuff like this and tend to think of it as "more" than 12 notes is that it is on the rather extreme side of using the intervals and patterns of those 12 notes, most likely in a unique way. Thats what brecker brothers do well haha. Especially on this head, its so angular.

It'd be interesting to see what minds like the brecker brothers would do with the quarter steps in eastern music, the possibilities would be much larger

  • Hey it's only a joke! When we were at GIT we used to laugh that there was only 12 notes. It was a simple excuse to try and explain great solo's we were blown away by!

  • Man ;)

  • I mean that the Brecker Brothers can take a 12 tone scale which seems simple and play the shit out of it. Intervals, arpeggios, scales, chord scales, substitutions etc. and take the listener to a new place. My point, 12 tones and a myriad of possibilities, it's brilliant! i.e. simple on the surface but yet very complex. Get the idea? It's an oxymoron.

  • EXTREME skunk funk

  • this is to crazy!!!! i love it

  • HOLY SHIT~~~~~I would give anything to able to shred this song like this...

  • I thought the speed of light was the maximum velocity...

  • @docholiday747 Lightspeed is first gear for these boys! Masters, all!

  • @docholiday747 scientists are figuring out what this is all about. This may be the first proof of something faster then light speed…

  • brecker is so clear at that speed.

  • which one? haha

  • LIGHTSPEEEEDDD

  • Holy Hell! I remember when I played this tune a few years ago with my combo in college. We were all pumped up to play on stage. Unfortunately, our drummer was as little TOO pumped up, and all of a sudden I heard him count of the tune roughly around this tempo and all I could think was "nnnnNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Let's just say that the results were not as good as this video.

  • Ahhh duuude that must have been miserable. What instrument were you on? Our Jazz Band has been playing an big band arrangement of this for concert and festival but we were like around 110 bpm...I had 2nd trumpet.....with all the "fun stuff"

  • I was on guitar. If I had been specifically designated only to the guitar part, it wouldn't have been so bad. However, since we didn't have a sax player (it was just me, drums, keys, bass, and trumpet), I had to play the melody as well. At 5 billion bpm, it doesn't lay so well on the guitar!

  • Hey, I think I might've played that same arrangement. I played 2nd trumpet too, we performed it on Monday. I think we were around 110, too.

  • AHHH!! THATS SOO FAST!!

  • Geez...to pull it off THAT fast and still go through with it....is amazing.

Drummer must have been having trouble...

  • i doubt it...it's Dennis Chambers.

  • Its ripping fast, don't think they planned it this way, just happened. But they pulled it off as they all have amazing chops!!

  • This isn't too fast. It's PERFECT. They SHRED it. I don't care if it's a little sloppy, nobody is perfect.

  • Dennis really screwed this up! You can see it on the brothers faces. Oh what a mess.

  • What video were you watching? The only facial expression was when Mike looked over and the band came in a beat and a half later, and NAILED IT! Chambers was on, as always.

  • Dennis took it out way too fast. Yes, he nailed it but I'll bet if you asked someone there in the band that night, they'd say he nearly killed them!

  • how/where?

  • It's too blazing fast. He must've been nervous, that's all...

  • This is a classic example of how to take a great number a ruin it by playing it too fast. It's just lost the feel of the original and it sounds like they are trying to get it over with as quickly as possible.

  • Or sometimes a tune sounds better live. I for one have always enjoyed original studio recordings of a particular artist however, when I hear the same song live, the artist generally picks up the pace a little bit and have always liked the faster version.

  • So you're saying you prefer this fast version? I think it's just lost all it's character.

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug!

  • hahaha!

  • right b4 he died

  • Michael Brecker, the one and only!

sadly, listening to this nitro prolpeled, unbelievable solo, that one feels even more how bad it was to loose him.

  • WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  • I prefer the Barcelona version, but holy shit they're good.

  • I love Randy's playing i really do, he's one of my favourites but do you reckon he was thinking during Mike's solo "Oh crap i've got to follow that?" lol. 5 stars!

    James

  • yah... thats fast

  • Darkhelmet: forget ridiculous speed, go straight to ludicrous speed !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Olol, Space balls. xD

  • so sick. holy crap

  • holy shit thats fast man. and way faster then the barcelona and michael is freakin amazing.

  • This is faster than the Barcelona version that is on YouTube somewhere.

  • fast as fuck! amazing

  • My favorite version of the song. Mike's solo is freakin insane...I love it....the best of the best.

  • thanks, yo! i grew up on the breckers.

  • finally, someone else who was raised on the breckers

  • it's so fucking fast:)

The Brecker Brothers are my heros^^

  • this is the fastest ive ever seen them take it! dammmmn

  • cut time, haha. god thats fast. this songs awesome. i wonder if the bass player had a hard time keeping up.

  • anyone would have a hard time keeping up with those two. goddamn!

  • Man mike stern!!!! hell yea and of course the ever so great Brecker brothers... Michael is missed for this exact reason

  • Michael Brecker, the impossible technique, the impossible solo, this is amazingly great,

it has the soul of great jazz, with the funk energy.

we miss so much Michael, thankyou for all the great inspiring solos

    God bless you forever

  • Yeah, quite a good descrption of Mike's music !

  • Michael Brecker is a god of tenor players. He is DEFINITELY missed.

Hahaha and I love Randy's expression at 01:07.

  • Dude!!! He does it again at 6:21. He sticks his tongue out at Michael quickly, and notice Michael smiling and looking over at Randy while trying to play the Head of the song.......fucking hilarious. I've never seen these two guys get comical when playing this pace and level of music.

  • Tout simplement monstrueux !

Les deux frères Brecker au top de leur forme !

Quelle tristesse que Michael ne soit plus de ce monde...

  • Stuff like this ruins the balance of ability in modern society, therefore I think I must be dead and in Heaven.

  • i always liked some kind of fusion. the breckerbrothers were good in that.

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. That be some real jaszh there man...

  • Holy sh*t that's fast. BB are great, and Dennis Chambers (drums)is unreal...

  • Michael and Randy are the best! Solo are perefect Thx a lot for their music! They are amazing ! Jazz is trendy with us! I liek the end of the Randy Solo : he joke and played with Michael, a wonderful moment (6:12)

  • amazing cosmic meltdown

  • Dag!!!!! Mike Brecker kills it!!!!!!! awesome!!!! what a solo!!...Brecker you are missed big time!!

  • what's up with the wire running into randy's mouthpiece? is it some kind of pick up?

  • Yeah I think it is a Pickup like those fitted to saxophones. But it does not goes into the mouthpiece but into the leadpipe.

  • Michael Brecker looks taller than everyone on the stage. Does Anyone know how tall Mike is?

  • about 6'5

    really big dude

  • 1 month and 10 days before I was born!

  • holy shit that's fast

  • i love this freaking song.
