@indaplace2b It's not the cleanest rendition, but I don't think there are many people capable of this feat in the world. If you want something that grooves a bit easier, listen to the version live in Barcelona. Sometimes, musicians have some fun when performing. It's funny--- a musical (well, in terms of resting) joke. I mean, listen to the audience's reaction. I mean, Randy's pause at 5:30 and Randy and Michael fooling around in the bars traded starting at 6:18? Brotherly bonding at its best.
FWIW, this tune is so fast because Mike and Dennis had a little thing going; every night Mike would sort of challenge Dennis's manhood: "Well, that was sort of fast, I guess that's fast enough, I'm sure you're doing your best...", and Dennis would just smile his little smile and wait until the next night. I'm sure we played this faster a week after this was filmed.
He certainly exploits the " less is more" adage until nothing becomes everything.. Hey, did Randy have contempt for his bro? I've seen lots of vids and it seems Randy is always looking down his nose at Micheal Is it bad nerves? Did he feel threatened ? Randy sometimes looks like he's competing Both these guys are in the top 1% of " ever on earth" Lose the Elmer Fudd and Bert and Ernie look though. Look @ Stern Thats how people look on stage.
whenever i dont feel like practicing my sax i just watch a video like this.... and i realize how far away i am from these guys in skill! thats inspiration
Believe me if you are a sax player you would understand the intricacies of MB's playing...much as I would of Randy's if i were a trumpet player. Both absoltely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it is really awesome.....but Terry on "Heavy Metal BeBop" is the most amazing drumming in the history of mankind! This tune and "SPONGE" are so OUTSIDE IT'S FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!
The way you guys keep talkin' it's like you never heard a group play a song faster live than recorded. Sure they've done some live takes at recorded speed, but have you listened to Miles's live cuts of So What? They make Impressions sound slow!
He's playing chromatically, which is causing the harmonizer effect to get a little goofy. However, I'm sure he was aware that's what would happen, and probably did it with that in mind, to create a little 'outside' effect, just like when he planes ideas around chromatically.
unbelievable! straight favourite.... listen to Mr Genus laying down phenomenal basslines - and Stern the best....! What I would have given to be there....
yes we do, he had a short stay here and he blew everything and everyone away, he was the one and only, the greatest...and such a nice guy, a wonderful human beeing.
Hey forget what I said about 12 notes, the point is... These guys kick ass! It's art, the final rule of music theory is to forget everything you've learned and just play!! It's music, so love it for what is, no analyzing required!! Have fun...positive vibes my fellow musicians! Life is too short already to over analyze something as cool as music, which none of us understand where it comes from anyway.
Can you explain this a little more please? Because from what I'm reading you sound completely wrong. For example, the last century of western music has experimented with many different scales containing more than twelve notes. Anyway, this is all beside the point docholiday is trying to make, but your comment is just not accurate.
yes ive found that there has been times when more than 12 tones were used, and in india there was something like a 34 notes but those never went anywhere, the small changes between quarter notes are so small the intervals just arent colorful enough for us to hear. The scales played on those 12+ toned ranges can be replicated on our 12 tone range. there is one that we cant but there is so much possible with our scale, it doesnt really matter how many tiny steps there are.
What do you mean by that? Western music have only twelve notes within the octaves. If you look in the midleeast and asia you get a bunch more notes of course. Twelve notes still...
I agree with Sandemose ... I think why people are generally impressed with stuff like this and tend to think of it as "more" than 12 notes is that it is on the rather extreme side of using the intervals and patterns of those 12 notes, most likely in a unique way. Thats what brecker brothers do well haha. Especially on this head, its so angular.
It'd be interesting to see what minds like the brecker brothers would do with the quarter steps in eastern music, the possibilities would be much larger
Hey it's only a joke! When we were at GIT we used to laugh that there was only 12 notes. It was a simple excuse to try and explain great solo's we were blown away by!
I mean that the Brecker Brothers can take a 12 tone scale which seems simple and play the shit out of it. Intervals, arpeggios, scales, chord scales, substitutions etc. and take the listener to a new place. My point, 12 tones and a myriad of possibilities, it's brilliant! i.e. simple on the surface but yet very complex. Get the idea? It's an oxymoron.
Holy Hell! I remember when I played this tune a few years ago with my combo in college. We were all pumped up to play on stage. Unfortunately, our drummer was as little TOO pumped up, and all of a sudden I heard him count of the tune roughly around this tempo and all I could think was "nnnnNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Let's just say that the results were not as good as this video.
Ahhh duuude that must have been miserable. What instrument were you on? Our Jazz Band has been playing an big band arrangement of this for concert and festival but we were like around 110 bpm...I had 2nd trumpet.....with all the "fun stuff"
I was on guitar. If I had been specifically designated only to the guitar part, it wouldn't have been so bad. However, since we didn't have a sax player (it was just me, drums, keys, bass, and trumpet), I had to play the melody as well. At 5 billion bpm, it doesn't lay so well on the guitar!
What video were you watching? The only facial expression was when Mike looked over and the band came in a beat and a half later, and NAILED IT! Chambers was on, as always.
This is a classic example of how to take a great number a ruin it by playing it too fast. It's just lost the feel of the original and it sounds like they are trying to get it over with as quickly as possible.
Or sometimes a tune sounds better live. I for one have always enjoyed original studio recordings of a particular artist however, when I hear the same song live, the artist generally picks up the pace a little bit and have always liked the faster version.
I love Randy's playing i really do, he's one of my favourites but do you reckon he was thinking during Mike's solo "Oh crap i've got to follow that?" lol. 5 stars!
Dude!!! He does it again at 6:21. He sticks his tongue out at Michael quickly, and notice Michael smiling and looking over at Randy while trying to play the Head of the song.......fucking hilarious. I've never seen these two guys get comical when playing this pace and level of music.
