Microsoft in 1997 bought only $150 million in non-voting shares which means Microsoft had no control of Apple whatsoever.  Microsoft sold that stock 4 years later in 2001.

I must admit he is entertaining. It's almost the reverse: Ballmer is more exciting that their products (actually they are garbage wrapped in attractive packaging), yet Apple's products are more exciting than the CEO. I guess it's because Jobs is a REAL computer guy (dull, boring), whereas Ballmer is the used car salesman type.
