  • i like your better that jon's because yours is funnier.im not saying any of yall are bad but on a scale of funny it goes Jory, you, jon.(and if there was more jon wouldn't be on bottom)i like funny videos and stuff that catches my eye.(like the microwave show did)

  • it has to be funny

  • what i look for in videos varies depending on the content

if its a review on a game, knife, toy, etc. HD picture and in depth coverage is a must

if its a funny video, good witty humor, NO STUPID COMMENTS (ie ray william johnson=bad imo)

serious videos should be done some what organized, language should be kept "PG" and content should be to the point.

as for VLOGS any thing goes because it (should) that person acting like they normally do any time of the day

ANY VIDEO style =dont be a douche bag

  • Does Jon edit your videos.

  • hehehe 8,008 views

  • Out of everyone I've ever watched on youtube, You, Jon, and Jory are my favorites. You all just seem very relatable and I just enjoy watching you all. You seem like the kind of guys that I as a person would hang out with. I love what you guys do with all your shows, don't change a thing. But, I think the real reason that you guys don't have as many viewers is that people are stupid. I don't mean that in a bad way I really mean theyre easily entertained and with ur videos u have to think a little

  • i like to see content thats funny

    random

    in the now

    frendly

  • How to get popular on the Internet is a debatable issue. I think Ray William Johnson said it best: "Fuckin' I don't know! You just get lucky, I guess." RWJ, obviously, got popular, yet he doesn't know how it happened. I think it's a combination of audio/video quality, the content of the video, the comedy, the production that goes into it, the video maker's personality, promotion, and, most importantly, establishing a dedicated fan base. YouTubers' fan bases are what make them big.

  • If I knew the answer to that question riley, I would have a million subscribers, and probably a lot of others too. I think its luck, I think its all luck.

  • its about the content dan brown writes out scrips on his videos and plans ahead , and he has good quility video , and also you may have to take one sentance 3 or even 4 times to get it till its gooe nough to put in the video

  • moron he has 7,585

  • if you are the most popular on youtube why does you only have 7,534 views on this video then -.-

  • go to walmart and buy some posters of hot chicks and stick them behind you lol boobs is what makes you toob a business :P

  • Usually edited videos are the best, with the mistakes at the end.But videos like Marriland are funny when you put effort in to it :3

  • Explosions and people getting hurt or being retards

  • i think the biggest part of getting tons of views is having tons of subscribers. Just gotta build them up slowly! For example, keep putting out quality videos, maybe add a LITTLE production value (I agree that over-produced and over-edited usually just covers up a lack of skill, but an aesthetically pleasing background and good lighting make it more pleasant to watch). Like others are saying, get deeper into topics too. Then people like me will subscribe! :)

  • Hey Riley... Just letting you know some opinions on how to make the show better. I think all your fans would like to see you get a little more in depth on a topic each show. And go the whole 10 mins, man... people obviously like what you gotta say. Take your time and have a good discussion.

    Good luck!

  • do a music act on your guitar at the end of your show

  • find something that you can do really well and do 10 times better.. and i think the most important thing you can do is to just stick with it for as long as possible..

  • all u need is something to bring others in, maybe you could get a angle that no-one else has. also you are awsome i dont see how people dont come to your vids

  • Content is key. You need something to get the viewers hooked. The good editing is just a bonus.

  • all you need to do is turn down the smartness on your vids.If you really want to sell out look at RWJ. His vidoes are just other viral vidoes with some commintary but it works cause in his show poeple can see nut shots, cats, and people getting really mad. Your vidoes have thought look at the comments there pargraphs of improving your vidoes compare to RWJ the comments are about penis jokes and sleeping with moms. your show better then alot of 1mill how at there so just wait

  • 5400th VIEW!!!!!

  • Riley you need to build up a fan base.

  • i look for the background; the personality of the person; they have to keep my interest and i like to not now what they are about to say; kind of like swiftkaratechop..even though your videos are not like his you never know what he is going to say; and also topics that everyone is going to have interest in. throw some comedy in the videos :]

  • What do I look for in videos, Maybe Music (If WMG doesn't take it down first!), Some Comedy-kind of like the microwave show. But most of all, TEAM RILEY!

  • It would be more funny if you actually did something this time. That's why the comedy series' views are so much higher.

  • Picture quality. I'm not saying its everything but i'm saying its something. Look at WhattheBuck and RayWilliamJohnson. What separates them from people like you isnt writing, its quality. I.e. if you're looking for a video of someone playing a song on the guitar, you are going to look for the one with the highest rating and with the best picture to see everything. WhattheBuck looks legit. Just get some kind of background (green scree) and a better camera. Not necesarily editing but it would help

  • The things that make youtube: Girls, explosions, and awesome humor (physical or verbal, doesn't matter)

  • I really liked how you did your very first "Radical Riley Factor" video (titled "Radical Riley Factor: Ed McMahon, New Movies! and Story Time!") and that's what made me subscribe to this channel. You haven't really done a video like that though since then.

Also, don't worry about trying to go viral! I want YOU to be the way YOU want to be, not the way everybody else is with flashy stuff. But if you wanted to do flashy stuff, do it because YOU think it's fun, not because you think you HAVE to.

  • You assume too much. I do not find your videos entertaining, I find them thought provoking. I go to microwave videos for laughs and botched science. I go to Riley for food for thought and homosexual overtones, seewatididther?

But for the business part? Look to Lanipator, he uses his fame(lol) and online series to market his products and ask for donations. There is a the Youtube business model.

  • Viral is a different matter. But for me a video is entertaining to me if i can relate to it. So . Honesty probably.. Like you riley.. and probably like Nat from community channel.. But simple viral rules that Shane and Onision live by are using flashy thumbnails and putting: - Miley Cyrus - Sex - Fail - Scandal and other ridiculous words that are remotely linked to the topic of the video... But that will only get you so far To get people to keep watching for me is still honesty, and humour ;)
  • "i'm heah, i'm heah! look at me, i'm the best!"

    LOL

  • The background is depressing...

And every time I start watching your video I have no idea what's coming. That's not good. I want to know before I choose to watch. For example, the title on this one... very uninteresting 'cause it doesn't tell me what this is about.

  • Riley FTW.

  • 5 stars for pit sweat

  • Just get a brighter light maybe, put in a little bit of background music, and throw in some editing tricks....and then it'll be perfect.

You already have the great personality and humor part naturally.

And just remember, Dan didnt have many viewers at first. It took him YEARS to get so well known.

    Don't worry, you'll get there :)

  • The bigger the beard the better the Riley.

  • the only reason I watch this is because Is it a good idea to microwave it... But I am 13 and I could do a-lot more editing but it depends on your software... If you have the software add a greenscreen its EASY to do

  • background music while u talk... so it doesnt seem like ur talkin forever.

  • I love the "ugly background"! Too much stuff in the back draws more attention away from the reason peeps are watching!

  • in business terms, think about your target audience and how you can get and hold their attention.

  • Most Youtube viewers go for flashy, fast, and visually stimulating videos about random/funny things. A smaller percent of viewers are looking for videos with intellectual meat, i.e. videos with ppl talking and questioning events/facts/ yahda-yahda-yahda. Both types of videos are good - and I'm sure many more types exist - but the first type is just more popular.

  • idk why you dont get viewers, i love your videos!!

  • You sorta blend in with the background...

  • Diggin' the facial hair Riley.

  • I find your Vids entertaining as like, you always get US involved by commenting etc. I like Jonny's vids, but theres too much Special effects for me "/

Btw: Your looking a little pale. Is it just me? Is it the shirt? xx

  • @kaseybabe19 haha yeah I need to go tanning

  • you know tanning can give you skin cancer..but i think you probably know that

  • I think you should keep reporting news like you do, but get a better camera and stuff. Of course, then you'd jut be a younger sxephil.

  • get an hd camera and put some stuff on your walls and you will be golden, oh better lighting with the new camera too

  • I think it's that high res camaras make everything more attractive.

  • People love your Boston accent.

  • Mate its the atmosphere in the video not what your saying its how you say it what you are showing and how you show it mate ;) i love the microwave show for the people well and what they do ;) cuzz they show it so well its so cool and has a great atmosphere qaulity too it

  • Maybe it looks more professional?

  • i look for something thats funny in a video. plain in simple. also, i believe confidence in ones self attracts people to that persons video

  • i like laughing, if u make me laugh ur good. or if u hav a topic im interested n. i like special effects cos it keeps me interested n wat ur saying, but if ur just talking idc and i'll prob go 2 another vid

  • Funny and cool stuff

  • Riley, I'm coming up with the same question. I just started trying to shoot some vlogs of my own, and I can't think of what people will want to see. So that is a great question. For me, it's a sense of escaping our own reality a bit. Getting to know another person without meeting them personally is enjoyable in a sense. Keep up your work with R3 and with John and Jory; you'll be getting those viewers in no time!

  • Content will make up for production values, but production values will not make up for content. Both is best, but if I had to choose, I'd sooner see a well thought out video than a well-edited one.

Microwave show does both ... as you mentioned, R3 is very bare-bones, but I like the content. So I'd say unless you have time to polish things up without affecting the quality of what's *in* the video, stay as you are. You've got enough personality to carry it off.

  • Me, personally, I enjoy personality, comedy, keeping a relative pace, being a bit informative, how well a video is presented/made, and having variety. As long as I am entertained, I'll sub.

  • Riley, were looking for humor, quality and series, that's why i love: "Is it a good idea to microwave this?"

    ^^

  • Good jokes are the key.

  • i dont think its possible to know what exactly makes a video viral i mean i dont understand why a sneezeing baby panda got what is it like 40 bigillion views but to be honest im a comedy guy you make me laugh i push that little yellow button.

  • luck

  • SEX SELLS MUFUUUCKAAAAA

  • What makes a good video?

When the guy that sits in front of the camera or sits behind the camera and edit all the videos has talent, charisma and fun when he makes his videos. Well and a cool background is always a great thing ;)

  • Honestly, the only videos I watch on YouTube are all the Ideo Productions-related shows and AVGN videos. I watch TMS because it has innuendo and sarcasm, my favorite comedy, and it is structured and routinized. I also have to like a person to watch their videos. I find most vloggers annoying and boring. I don't care what's going on in their lives. I genuinely love hearing what you and Jonny and Jory have to say. You lead interesting lives and care about your fans.

    -Hypercoaster1989-

  • Hmmm..."What makes a good video?" You ask.

    An interesting question.

If I had to come up with a short & sweet answer it wold be that it's a very fine balance between style, substance & originality.

But there's more to it than that. I mean, that a video can have a massive amount of substance, but a bit slim on style & originality, & somehow still be cool.

So maybe then, you could say that it's a fine balance between style, substance, originality & presentation.

  • hmm good question.....

  • Riley, creativity is what attracts viewers - People like Dan and Jonathan create funny, yet not boring videos - Dan always talk about a very interesting theme in his own way, resorting to jokes here and there to keep the pace and the attention going, while Jonathan creates multiple shows, 3 or 4 options, all of them with a more "visual" or "joking" approach. It's like if the microwave show was the comedy fun, without informativity, and Movie Night was the criticism, for the people looking forit.

  • The secret is being innovative - too much repetition sucks - and creating your own fanbase. If people like your video style, they'll keep watching you! I hope I've helped, and good luck!

  • 1) Computers that don't crash down

    2) Continue to build yourself up instead of building up, leaving, building up leaving. you know what i mean ; )

    3) Variety. Like Jory's AFO and even the microwave show, it gets a little boring seeing the same thing. I stopped watching AFO's and like when you were host and Jonny was sidekick, it was a good change of pace and made the video more interesting.

    4) Comedy

    5) Well put together

  • About #3: A host and a co-host is good, four different hosts with four different personalities is bad?

  • No. I said its just the same thing each week. Like they just talk about some topic and make their jokes about it. With the Microwave Show, it was just different because Riley did all the things Jory did and he did it a little differently.

  • Maciwain

  • i have no idea, but when i find it i know it...sometimes it is something that a freind has sent me, other times it is what youtube tells me what i should watch. although having a youtuber who actully cares about his/hers fan-base is what keeps me intersted

  • i really am not sure what i look for in a youtube vid but i do know i love the special fx but i also like your 'show' a lot and also some big youtubers that are my fave give shout outs but most of the time i dont even like the people they give shout outs to or who they colab with

  • Anything entertaining, i found myself watching the shaytard family the other day, and it is somewhat entertaining and its as simple as a videoblog with hard cuts(editing).. Riley, i think you should take some time and do some minor editing just remove pauses, breathing etc. makes your vids a lot cooler!

  • Originality mate.

  • I look for either information, or cheap laughs. Both put together is nice, too.

  • dan has had more time as a blogger, you simply haven't been around as much or had the same publicity (yet!)

But you have wonderful charm, and comedy and good opinions, what ever you do, don't lose those!

  • i dont look for the editing or planning skills.

  • It Depends:

    1)Interesting Topic

    2)Comedy

    3)good editing

    4)Color

    5)nothing too old

  • Dan is a man of infinite wisdom. He's also made entirely out of awesome.

  • Personally I watch Youtube vids for humor and jokes. First I think in about every video you should ask the viewers a question that has something to do with the video you make, then you should figure out what stuff your going to focus on in your videos. It could be video games, TV, your personal life, the news, anything that sounds interesting and will catch someones eye. You also need some girls, (hint chicks with big racks=more views). The rest is up to you and the way you act.

  • riley, just a a tip. in most vlogger videos and such there are alot of cuts. all you have to do is edit with pretty much any program, windows movie maker comes with pc's and imovie comes with macs. after you are done talking about a subject or moving on to another, either cut with the camera and move a little bit then start recording again, or just dont stop recording, move your body and start talking again, then edit out the part with the pause. this is useful, and also maybe move the camera

  • After talking to Marc Summers about this (ask Jon what he had to say about TMS), I'd say it's a matter of personality mixed with concept. A personality doing nothing of interest will fail, but a concept with the wrong talking head will bomb, too. As for viral one-offs, I don't think anyone's officially found the formula yet, except getting lucky with candid footage so you can laugh at someone's expense, as opposed to laughing with their planned joke. (Remember, trolls hate "fake and gay" vids!)

  • Team Riley all the way! Too much editing can ruin a video. I like that you do this with no script just a camera and an idea. You talk about issues that are happening right now. People want to hear that. It's good discussion. :) and a great way to do videos.

  • You could use some sound effects. I watch videos for comedy. You don't need sound effects or special editing or anything to be funny. All you need is a good sense of humour (that's the best way I have to put it).

Check out Wheezywaiter he dosent have all that much but I think hes slightly more funny than sxephil.

  • Comedy + Girls + Les Pauls = Perfect Video

  • Lighting and greenscreen.

  • exposure you need to find a way to get more people to find you

  • I HAVE NO CLUE....

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • i watch vids for comedy :D

  • I'm all about the content

  • I personally like your one take videos. Sometimes too much editing and scripting is just annoying. Your videos seem more personal, like you're talking to ME. Jon's videos on the other hand are focused on the entire audience and making money

  • sexy sweaty armpits :D

  • @ 1:49 ....gross

  • well if u count the microwave show. that's pretty cool and what makes it entertaining is maybe just the microwaving stuff or the intro and outro with like the bloppers. and jory acts funny

  • most of the vlogs i have with people just talking at the camera, i just listen. maybe a few corny jokes?

  • riley the person makes the video different people like different things but alot of people think if your you then its a good video no matter what (:

  • more skin. no shirt. chest and bell hair. all increase views. {see Ina crossland} o and the hint of gayness helps too.

  • ?????????????????????????????

  • honestly, if you look at my subscription list its pretty much all guys so i guess i look for hot faces when i decide i like someones video

  • So chicks can be just as superficial, well I don't feel like such a skeeze now. :D

  • you compared to a pogo stick or a microwave the difference is the wow factor. If you can find a way sucker people into watching your videos than more people will keep coming back. stuff exploding in the microwave plays to people's love of destruction or even a pair of big juggs that only slightly have anything to do with the video will bring people in make them feel dumb than you wow them and the get sucked in like sxephil or shanedawson

  • Get a green screen

  • I like funny vlogers like Dan Brown and Shane Dawson!

  • tags, good tags make more views. Well scripted video. and advertising yuor channel with the featured video thingy on youtubel

  • But I'll like to say that I still keep on watching your shows because I like the way you present some of today's topics. Probably some spiffier editing can be done, like insert a picture or video relating to the topic might be cool.

  • Honestly, I like the unexpected. That's why for me the microwave show is so successful, it's unscripted and so many unnexpected things can happen!

  • What brought me to "Is it a good idea to microwave this?" was an impulse click. I found that the episode I watched was well-made, funny and quite off-the-wall. I like well-made things, whether it's a blog, a series, a guide, TV episode/series or a movie.

For your videos, better lighting is a must, even simple shop lights. A simple background - a blanket or sheet - would work wonders (plus help with audio). Then worry about improving the video itself. I'm sure Jon and Jory can help with that.

  • i like that you don't do cuts after every sentence, i mean, it's cool, but a lot of people do it lol

  • Honestly, I like good editing, shiny effects and some good sarcasm. Really, the content in the video might be completely useless, but I enjoy listening to people opinions, thoughts and them doing funny stuff (like microwaving random household items)

  • i believe that its mainly the entertainment factor, dan states his facts in a humorous way and u, jory and johnny all just meld together

  • Riley, i don't mean this n a bad way AT ALL, but dan's videos are more intellectual, which is why we love him, but also why he doesn't have as many subscribers as he should, people don't understand him...

and speaking of loving dan, were were you at the live show last night? jon and jory were there...

  • There isn't one specific thing that I like in a video...it can be a variety of things. But the quality that all good videos have is that they have SOMETHING that catches my attention. In the case of Dan Brown, that something is his actual topics. For someone like MysteryGuitarMan, it's the awesome creative effects. For superEd86, it's the comedy. There has to be something to catch my interest. If a video is just some random dude talking about irrelevant crap, that's boring.

  • as long as its interesting...

  • Things explodeing

  • i dont know why i like watching this but i do. i keep watching this and enjoy it

  • hmmm i think that it is just luck

other times it is hard work put into the video

i like laughing which i already do with you and jonny and jory.

  • I think a set plays an important part in videos. It's a pretty basic idea that people are attracted to colour. So if you want to increase viewers, get more colours.

Another thing is jump cuts. They require a lot of editing and stuff, but when used, they can lead to fast paced videos that keep peoples attention. Also, jump cuts can lead to funny randomness at times.

Those are the suggestions I have, but I think your videos are great as they are and you really don't need to change them.

  • and make them look professional

  • first u shouldn't just sit and talk

there shouls be other material pis music vid

dan brown has a awsome speaking voice

and have entertaining topic that start disscussions

  • what makes vids go viral:

    comedy

    stupid people

MAAAAYBE hoboes n_n I like hoboes

GREEN BALLS ( inflatable not.. you know )

  • EPIC!!!

  • 1:49

    5 STARS FOR SWEATY ARMPITS.

  • It depends on what i'm looking for.

But when it come to your's and jonny/jory's show...

    funny comments

    exciting things

    and news(in your case)

    that's my opinion.

  • I enjoy the fast interesting quick news on modern but semi serious topics. I generally use youtube to watch brief comedy videos that inform me on whats going on then look up the specifics if i am interested

  • eat blueberry pie

  • Yeah a more colorful background would be good, also some editing to get everything right, maybe even a couple of takes for each part of the video, but make sure it doesn't feel scripted.

Make the video flow a little bit better with some editing and colorful background and then go from there.

  • You metioned Team Riley on Live Time With Jon And Jory

  • i think they're are 3 reasons for a video to go virial.

    1. acts of extreme stupidity

    2. videos that resonate with the general humor of society

    3. videos that make you go "what the fuck?"

  • HA BISKY. Oh, but Riley, you are entertaining because you talk fast and talk silly. I like it. It's why I subbed.

  • did not no u could flick some body off on utube

  • I'm looking for funny. random funny. sketchy funny. lots of just humor or the unexpected.

  • Riley, you definitely have the personality, what you lack on R3 (and don't get me wrong i love the show) is editing, and video quality. You can go without the editing, if the video has information (refer to nutnfancy and his vids) and maybe a little interactivity. Like ask a questing and then display the top results in your next vid. RWJ, iJustine, and OlgaKay all do that. No offense to John or Jory, but my favorite thing from the microwave show was "TWo POINT FIVE" constancy, crank vids

  • hmm, the pants on the ground vid was funny

  • Heres somethine that i like to look for in a video

    1. funny or entertaining

    2. a little suspence (microwve show)

    3. someting to learn from the video.

    hope this helps. TEAM Riley!

  • put up some left 4 dead and borderlands posters

  • boobs.

  • one simple thing.

    STORMTROOPER OUTFIT!

  • The most promising thing about YouTube (and all new media) is the community. The more involved the community becomes, the crazier the things we can do.

I may or may not have a massive community based project up my sleeve...

  • @pogobat The only thing the youtube community is full of is trolls.

  • @pogobat Count me in!

  • May or may not? Sounds like a...

    *cue dramatic music*

    Plan?

  • I'm voting yes on that one...

  • Love you right back!

    : D

  • @pogobat lol nice :D

  • We wanna some DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!

  • i look for comedy, and just something interesting. like blowing up shit in a microwave.haha

  • wat ive noticed on youtube videos is.. the more stupid or weird the video the higher hits it gets..

but for me i tend to like humor that is similar to my interests and entertaining footage that's just fun to watch

  • If at any point you start making videos in order to get viewers they wont be loyal. The vlogbrothers, for example, have never really had a super popular video, but the nerdfighters are the loyalist group on youtube.

  • usually something funny, funny animals (in particular cats) or an amazing achievement makes something viral or porn (i'm not joking). But if it is something like a web series then it has to be well edited etc.

  • What makes a video entertaining to me? Real people. Just be real. Be real, and you'll do fine.

  • team riley

  • for me its what u guys have to talk about i just like to have different peoples oppions on things and what makes a vid viral is uniqueness and unique is a guy on a pogostick doing backflips caz not every1 can do that and i started watching dan caz of his politics but he has changed up his show since then and i still watch him caz of his ideas and the fact that he puts out vids like we r a tribe and that really gets my attention when he does that the ep things that blow dans mind and ha bisky vid

  • You just gotta be entertaining, a bit of soft music to hold my attention, and keep the facts of the video flowing fast.

  • your on the right track maybe little editing here and there and some effects then it would be be good

  • over editing = annoying as hell.

  • unless there are some glaring faults i dont think you should overuse editing, because a lot of those "popolar" youtubers use a bit too much editing in my opinion.

  • the thrill, content, fads, random stuff ( meh), funny things, actions, effects (only for vids that applies the vid to what it is) thats what i look for in vids
