I am a 36 years old and grew up listening to all kinds of music in a family of talented musicians. I watched him though, some of his live vids... he really has a gospel style when he plays... he plays like this lady at my church. It (Gospel) uses jazz chords, but it's a little different at the same time, e.g..it's based more heavily on "The Gospel Fifths" than 12-bar blues. Watch Bob James (who has classical influence too but is smooth jazz), then McDonald, you'll see a difference.
