This song was sampled by Kirk Franklin song "Declaration (This is it)" And Rapper Nas "We Will Survive". Good music is good music and can transcend across genres, generations, race ect......Great song
I am a 36 years old and grew up listening to all kinds of music in a family of talented musicians. I can remember waking up 2 get ready for school in elementary school and my dad had the radio blasting with everything from Kenny Loggins to Jimmy Hendricks to Shaka Khan, to Patti Labelle to Michael McDonald, to the Commodores, Phil Collins... Music is definitely not the same. I LOVE Kenny Loggins. He is a classic!
A great song by one of the greatest. You have an 81 year old fan that used to dance to Ike Turners music in St Louis then along came Tina. Still singing still dancing but behind closed doors. Truely love your music. Darlyne
May as well chime in with the chorus...I'm a sixty-five year-old African American male who has loved Loggins & Messina, Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, etc. forever.
I'm an 16 year old African American male and my family and friends think I am crazy because I love different music. But ahhahaa I don't care Music comes in different colors and sizes :)
@1quick4u For one thing so much American music is influenced by African American culture, and so much African American music in turn is influenced by the larger American culture. Your family needs to relax.
I've been looking for this song for forever...I thought it was George Michael and Michael McDonald...my sis is like why not listen to the Kirk Franklin version...nah I like the original
36-year old African American female who was raised on all kinds of music. And i'm a BIG FAN of Kenny Loggins! I even have his greatest hits! Great musicians come in ALL COLORS!
@Joshystyle Exactly! I hate to hear people say, "that's white/black/spanish music!" That is just so....ughhh! I had someone ask me once, "Why you listen to white people music?" I asked them what difference did it make what I listened to. As long as I liked it, it should be none of their concern what I LIKE! But that's ignorance for you, and I don't let it seep into my brain.
@Joshystyle Exactly! I hate to hear people say, "that's white/black/spanish music!" That is just so....ughhh! I had someone ask me once, "Why you listen to white people music?" @wurltee I love this song so much. I'm only 22, but I remember the first day I heard it. I had to be a teenager and began searching for this song everywhere.
@wurltee you do't have to tell me. I am 32 African American and I am in love tih Kenny Loggins since childhood. Michael McDonald too. Great musicians relate to everyone, color doesn't exist in good music and are timeless.
Timeless music by two of my favorite voices. I have been listening to this song since the early 80s and it still gives me goosebumps. Can't find too many songs like this today.
@andrewfrancis74 but.... he never did the... power vocal thing... like this dude, stevie wonder, anybody else... he did it but it was his own style it wasn't traditional.
In those days (pre- thriller) he was still going through the teen-adult transitions, so we kinda didn't catch his exact style yet, so we ( me and my peeps) were fooled for a while.
@andrewfrancis74 I miss 80's style R & B in general.... they even added a category to the Grammys called "Traditional R & B" which Jennifer Hudson won in..... I feel like... why do they even need this category.... it's like R & B is dying, or something.... I know it's not, it just feels like it is...
@bun223 Yes....the Hip Hop R&B got popular . But all music has it's time at the forefront - it never dies though. Jazz still has it's fans being born every day, though it doesn't rule the world like in Louis Armstong's days....same for Blues , Rock 'n' Roll, Reggae, etc, etc.
@andrewfrancis74 that was a beautiful comment! Thank you! 'Cause I still play jazz and R & B on the piano, and I will never stop! Like you say, every music style has its time, there are trends, etc. As long is there is some artistry in what is new out there, it's ok.
@bun223 Popular music rules my life to the point of becoming a vocalist myself - wouldn't be so bold as to call myself a Singer. Shoulda known you were a musician. Just talkin' 'bout music !
@andrewfrancis74 Yeah I play.... but I don't play and sing like Michael McDonald does. (that's hard to do!) I watched him though, some of his live vids... he really has a gospel style when he plays... he plays like this lady at my church. It (Gospel) uses jazz chords, but it's a little different at the same time, e.g..it's based more heavily on "The Gospel Fifths" than 12-bar blues. Watch Bob James (who has classical influence too but is smooth jazz), then McDonald, you'll see a difference.
@bun223 Wh..what ..wh..what ? Sorry, you've ventured into my area of illiteracy. Sorry I can't follow you with all your 'fifths' etc. Me being a vocalist is sorta in between Mike McDonald and Snoop Dogg....I hit melodic notes but don't know any music. I know you wanted someone you could rap to.
@andrewfrancis74 yeah if I had more time, I might study a little more music myself.... or take a little spring class over at the institute of music by the library... but I don't. I was even asked to play somewhere but it was last minute. But I always find time to practice, and sometimes people sit and watch or comment, what have you.
There've been times in my life I've been wondering why Still, somehow I believed We'd always survive Now, I'm not so sure You're waiting here One good reason to try But, what more can I say What's left to provide You think that maybe it's over Only if you want it to be Are you gonna wait For a sign, your miracle Stand up and fight This is it, make no Mistake where you are This is it, your Back's to the corner This is it, don't be a Fool anymore, this is it The waiting is over
GOOD GOD, these white men can really sing their asses off!!! Infact, Kenny & Michael are two white boys with some SERIOUS SOUL in their bones...And my favorite line of this song is when, Kenny growls out the words "Are you gonna wait for a sign-Your miracle...STAND UP AND FIGHT"!!! I love it:-)!!!
@Ladywrip The 70s and 80s were FILLED with white people with soul. One of the things I loved about that era was that color wasn't really a factor with the music. Everyone loved and appreciated the art. Today it seems things are too divided, and a white person or anyone else not of color would come off as a poser trying to sing songs like this.
@XAJanaeX i agree about music although i believe there is no such thing as race like black white. If anything we're all descendant of where we call Africa
white people with soul? definitely! color was not a factor?. you've got to be kidding. music was racially segregated so much so mtv wouldnt play michael jackson until his number of albums sold made it embarassing. the chanted refrain of white students in my high school in ny was "disco sucks!" which was code for black music sucks. i could go on but i wont.
I got to Kenny quite well. and after each concert I went back stage and he remembered my name. Which made me feel special, BELIEVE ME. He still remembers. LadyProwler
@StanBennet yeah. he was overshadowed by alot of acts that were better marketed. michael mcdonald being one. kenny had big singles. i don't know about big albums.
this is that jam!!! the original white chocolates lmao as my mom would say.....back in the day this was always a part of her playist every sundays..good memories i tell you :-)
He wrote this song for his dad he was going into surgery on his heart. His dad told em that he didn't think he was gonna make it out of the surgery alive...hence the lyrics that kenny is singing to em.
I love this song...very inspiring! Again, I will say what say on older songs like this...they do not make them like this anymore....where is the passion that songs like this had?
According to the liner notes of the greatest hits CD, Loggins states that "the lyric was inspired by my father when he found himself in a moment of a life or death decision. Thanks to 'This Is It', he chose life"
@HumblePie76 .....I love this too!! I used to listen to this when I was just a kid...I remember it was a hit...Still sounds great!! "olliepet" ...1976...lol
