I was waiting for the bit where he chops his arm off and attaches a chainsaw, then I realised this isn't The Evil Dead, even though it looks and sounds like it!

Though Evil Dead is awesome, you do realize that this story, which as far as the trailer looks is identical to the original, was written almost 200 years ago. The first film came out in the early 60s, so it predates a number of films in America, but this is the first time they've been able to translate it with the proper effects, so we'll see how it turns out!

I'm still going to watch it. I still say it emulates Evil Dead visually and stylistically though. I've seen the rather comedic 1967 version, which I liked, but really don't see anything in that film carried over to The Evil Dead?

Oh, no, not doubting that at all. I doubt anyone even knew about the film over here back then because of the typical Cold War mentality. Just saying that, supposedly, they're trying to emulate the original version of the story as close as possible, so what you're seeing there is as written, and not really based off of anything. Even the 'Ring' looking circle in the trailer is from the story itself, but most people are going to think it's just ripping it off.

To be totally honest I have never read the original tale, but you obviously know what your talking about, so I'll take your word for it ;-)

I'lll definitely be watching this when it's released though. Even if it possibly took inspiration from Sam Raimi, that's no bad thing. It's weird you should mention the Ring, cos it also reminds me of Ringu also, although it's a hard comparison to avoid these day, a ghostly white pale girl with long lang black hair is an everything these days!

The original film did a fairly good job of retaining a portion of the original story, but it was obviously well above what they were capable of. Howver, the incorporation of tradition belief and cultural practices was awesome. Hopefully with this new one they'll mix some classic horror stuff with the stuff that made the original so cool, but Russian films anymore have just been copies of American stuff. Even if people don't know where it came from, it will probably copy a lot anyway!

Very bad remake! It´s just a trashy horror movie, not more! Some of the scenes looks stolen from the Exorcist.... Very poor!

I wish you have seen the original Viy, made in 1967. It was scary, and no MTV style. But this one looks like a usual trash-horror.

Well if they gonna make a remake of that movie and not use all possible special effects and not make it fast paced - what would be the point of a remake? The original was great in its time. But now as I watch it its too slow, poor special effects etc. etc. We gonna see I guess when it comes out.

Haven't seen this remake yet but loved the original which I've had on PAL VHS for years. But I will agree with you about the MTV style directing of most all movies these days (Especially Hollywood films)

Yes the original looks better. The witch/girl here looks like a Ring, Grudge girl combo. Filmakers now need to invent a new look. The witch in the original looks much better.
