I'm not too sure I'd even call this emo besides lyrical content. It's closer to the type of fuzz rock of bands like Dinosaur Jr., though this song is in 1985, when Dinosaur Jr.'s first album came out. Relatively similar to the scene popping out, I'm not adverse to calling it emo, but this is just a much earlier forerunner to the genre we now know and berate as/that is emo.

@jmsylve Your a bit mistaken on the term. emocore does date back to '85 and was the scene in DC in 86 87....These guys were big fans of Minor Threat and conversely Ian Mackaye was a fan "and roadied" for rites. Yes they hated the term but it was rites that started it. The actual show or term origin is debated still.....and some even say Ian coined the term mockingly in a skateboard mag, whatever like the stupid term grunge it is here to stay...I can tell you that it was a good time for music..

At that point, I don't think anyone in the band would have argued with it, however with the staggering piles of steaming crap that have been placed in this particular category over the last ten years, it's no surprise that people would want to distance this amazing band from the genre.
