I agree. I had a gross of M80's in the 70's and that was perhaps 5% of the power of a real M80. The newer M80's look the same only in the size of the red cardboard tube. The new ones upon examination are sealed on the ends deep inside the cardboard. The old ones (which will blow your hand off) were sealed at the very edge and were completely filled with flash powder. The old ones made your 20 grams of sparkler powder look silly.
Grind up ur sparkler mix better. Put it in a plastic bowl and smash it up with a screwdriver handle.
The reason those sparks flew and cause more bangs is because there were chunks in ur mix. The finer the powder, the quicker the burn, the louded ur pop.

1.4g is the classification for Consumer fireworks, not the weight or content. 1.3g is the classification for display fireworks that are illegal to purchase without a permit from the ATF. 1.4g are legal to buy (in some states)

A real m80 is apprx. 1/4 a stick of dynamite and are very hard to get. I had a neighbor who worked in wildlife where he could purchase them to scare animals away for clearing forest areas and such.
That thing you called an "M-80" wasn't the real thing. 1.4 grams is about half of an M-80. M-80's typically have 3 to 6 grams of flash powder. I don't know where you bought that from but it was most definitely a scam.

That commercially bought m80 can turn into a real sounding one all you need to do is fill the two gaps on each side with hot glue. My freind brought one over to my house and I did that and it was loud as hell.
I am a 47 year old professional Pyrotechnic. I do shows. I'm licensed. And I like to mess around also. I am not going to be mean to anyone cause everyone needs to learn OKay look Sparklers are not Black Powder they are Magnesium & chlorate the chlorate ones were outlawes in 77. Anyway the magnesium they use in sparklers with an oxidizer does not burn fast enough to creat a noise! And that what you call a M-80 had recessed end and was the sadest M-80 I ever heard. It's silly Forget numbers just go by tube size like 6x1 or 3x1 or 1 1/2x3/4ths etc.. You make your own batch of flash up & you fill up your tubes. If you wish you can weigh the amount each different tube holds. Then say well the scale say's this holds 6 times the amount of a M-80 . But you reach a point where it don't get louder and is wastefull after 100 grams your not going to get much louder Then your not in the fireworks range anymore! And may as well get out the C4 lol

@surgelogic From a man who makes a living at making fireworks thats true But if he had the best mix in the world and did not mix it well enough it would still be lousy you have to intimately mix your fuel with your oxidizer. And what you want to get is a good 3 micron aluminum like 5413HS german Dark And some Per with cabosil so it don't get lumpy & mix it on a big piece of paper wear cotton shirt only. Move it back & forth over itself until it has a cosistancy look all the same.
@TheChemist45 You can also purchase those small Glad containers(disposable type). They work perfect and all you have to do is obtain the proper ingredients which can be found online(600 micron Black Indian flake,potassium perchlorate,(7:3 ratio, 7parts p p,3 bl al)). Once each chem is weighed, throw them in glad cont and shake for 1 min. Voila perfection! The bodies, end caps, and fuse can be found very easily online as well! 1.3G is the classification given to display fireworks professionals use.
A real M80 has 3 or more grams of flash powder. but real M80's are illegal just about everywhere, the most flash powder allowed in legal M80's like the one you have is no more than 50 milligrams 0.05 g of flash powder.
fake m-80. I used to buy the real thing by the gross, and trust me, a real m-80 would have a double report as in ka-boom. It also would have split that pot in pieces. We used to cover them with rubber cement and roll them in a bag of bb's to make grenades.

dude you shouldnt use firecracker black powder. go to a gun shop. get a tin of gunpowder of synthetic black powder and some fuse if they sell it. then get an 8" piece of 2" pvc pipe and two caps. also get some fernco fasteners, which you tighten around the glued bomb lengthwise. id say fasten two on there. make sure you drill the fuse hole as small as you can. then get some kind of large hollowed out object and blow it up, like maybe a toilet or television
He was ripped off. That wasn't a real m80. These stores sell what looks like a m80 but has no more gun powder then a simple fire cracker. I remember what real m80s were like back in the 1970s when I was a kid.

@Morsam1995, yes, technically an M-80 is ranged from 2-3. But when you make M-80s and but them off the reservation, they are typically 3-6 grams.

That commercially bought m80 can turn into a real sounding one all you need to do is fill the two gaps on each side with hot glue. My freind brought one over to my house and I did that and it was loud as hell.

I am not going to be mean to anyone cause everyone needs to learn OKay look Sparklers are not Black Powder they are Magnesium & chlorate the chlorate ones were outlawes in 77. Anyway the magnesium they use in sparklers with an oxidizer does not burn fast enough to creat a noise! And that what you call a M-80 had recessed end and was the sadest M-80 I ever heard. You have a lot you need to learn

Once you mix your own flash with good per & 5413 german Dark aluminum The size of the salutes power and loudness will only depend on how much you put in the tube you are using and how big it is. Forget all those stupid numbers they are only used to get you to buy crap in the stores everything legal all of it is all only allowed to have 50mgs of powder. No matter what it say's it has no more that!

And I get my tubes and end plugs and visco and If I want a big salute I make 75 grams of Magnesium that is! & fill up a 6x1 red/white/blue tube with either red plastic end plugs or the cardboard and glue em in with elmers. And thats it. There was only one true name and that was the M-80 detonation simulater used in army

@paintballftw69 If it was never legal at anytime then the number as in M-800 will only have whatever the person underground decides to put in it! The only reason you can definately say a M-80 has 2-3 grams is because that is what a 1 1/2 inch x 9/16ths tubes with end plugs can hold if you leave about %20 air room which you should. As you never pack flash! Only gunpowder. So the M-80 since you like using numbers lol Is the only real number that once existed pre 1966 & originated from the army.

It's silly Forget numbers just go by tube size like 6x1 or 3x1 or 1 1/2x3/4ths etc.. You make your own batch of flash up & you fill up your tubes. If you wish you can weigh the amount each different tube holds. Then say well the scale say's this holds 6 times the amount of a M-80 . But you reach a point where it don't get louder and is wastefull after 100 grams your not going to get much louder Then your not in the fireworks range anymore! And may as well get out the C4 lol

@surgelogic From a man who makes a living at making fireworks thats true But if he had the best mix in the world and did not mix it well enough it would still be lousy you have to intimately mix your fuel with your oxidizer. And what you want to get is a good 3 micron aluminum like 5413HS german Dark And some Per with cabosil so it don't get lumpy & mix it on a big piece of paper wear cotton shirt only. Move it back & forth over itself until it has a cosistancy look all the same.

@TheChemist45 You can also purchase those small Glad containers(disposable type). They work perfect and all you have to do is obtain the proper ingredients which can be found online(600 micron Black Indian flake,potassium perchlorate,(7:3 ratio, 7parts p p,3 bl al)). Once each chem is weighed, throw them in glad cont and shake for 1 min. Voila perfection! The bodies, end caps, and fuse can be found very easily online as well! Check my vids to see what the results could be!

1.4G is not "grams of flash powder"- it's the classification given to consumer fireworks
1.3G is the classification given to display fireworks professionals use.
A real M80 has 3 or more grams of flash powder. but real M80's are illegal just about everywhere, the most flash powder allowed in legal M80's like the one you have is no more than 50 milligrams 0.05 g of flash powder.
BIG DIFFERENCE.

fake m-80. I used to buy the real thing by the gross, and trust me, a real m-80 would have a double report as in ka-boom. It also would have split that pot in pieces. We used to cover them with rubber cement and roll them in a bag of bb's to make grenades.

I mean, look at exploding targets, if you've ever shot one, (and recorded it) you know that theres a BIG difference in sound... Take a look at my "Home Made Black Powder Cannon" VIdeos. Watch the results and then build it and compare it. Not trying to be a dick, just throwing a suggestion out there.

Here is how you know it's a real Salute You get your own 3 micron Aluminum Indian Head Black or German Dark 5413HS. Then get some 325 milled potassium per & some good tubes and end plugs some visco elmers glue & make your own! Then you will know what the real deal is all about. But don't get to comfy with your mixing after you do it once. As flash can & will bite and hurt you even kill you at 75 grams.!

dude you shouldnt use firecracker black powder. go to a gun shop. get a tin of gunpowder of synthetic black powder and some fuse if they sell it. then get an 8" piece of 2" pvc pipe and two caps. also get some fernco fasteners, which you tighten around the glued bomb lengthwise. id say fasten two on there. make sure you drill the fuse hole as small as you can. then get some kind of large hollowed out object and blow it up, like maybe a toilet or television
