Why cant ppl just say Great, and leave it at that, u americans always disagreeing on the most unimportant things. Just apreaciate it for what it is guys.
Great Performance. However, I would advise people not to dismiss Jimi's original, especially the live version in Paris (I forget which year). However, I love both versions, and perhaps Stevie's to me a little bit more than Jimi's I'll admit, but I love Jimi's as well.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best covers of contemporary music. In my opinion, SRV played Jimi's songs like Jimi SHOULD have played them.
I've yet to see someone play with so much NATURAL feeling! vai sometimes fakes it and you can tell... same with satriani..... SRV is just raw human emotion.
They were heavy gauge strings that he tuned down I believe. I'm not sure of the exact stats, but I know for a fact that his high E would sometimes be a .18..which is nuts.
what's the big deal with mozart? pick any of his parts (the second oboe, flutes, etc) and they are all interesting. That was the genious of mozart. Study jimi's licks and then study SRV'. SRV has crafted his in such a way it's learn able and playable by even average guitar players. But once again you can't judge anything by a remake, SRV had 20 years worth of licks to pick from. Jimi's claim to fame is his innovation (a three piece rock band?), and foresight not his technical prowess.
apples and oranges. aside, people are bias on this topic based on primary exposure. if your big brother blasted jimi as you grew up, then there is not anyone who can convince you that jimi is not the greatest. srv was the greater technician, but by no means the greatest of all time. most musicians are unmarketable, and chances are the greatest guitarist of all time will die without a fraction of the fame jimi or srv enjoyed. rock and or roll
It's a LOT better then the Hendrix version - but hendrix didn't know it was going to be a contest. The guy who does the remake gets all the breaks. If Hendrix had lived no one would be calling him the greatest guitar player ever. He was sloppy for one thing.
Man your retarted. Im sorry. Man this version cant hold a candle to Jimi's version and isnt one tenth what Hendrix's was. You don't even get the same vibes from this that you get from Hendrix's. And SRV is so perfect why did he make a mistake at 33 seconds. And I play the guitar and study guitar styles from African guitar playing to Jazz and I dont think Jimi is sloppy.
Music... the unspoken language that was created to bring us all together thru our human interpreters...people like Hendrix, SRV, Clapton,
Malmstein, Satriani, Mozart, Bach etc. Till somebody wants to debate over who interperets the best. Thats like saying who's got the best accent, its pointless, useless, and distracts from the enjoyment of both the music and the musician. For those of us who love the music, both interpreters....Hendrix and SRV were right
Man but when you have 12 year olds who dont understand what you just said it gets frustrating. Its like arguing what shade of Blue is the best. And really REAL musicians undertstand that out of respect for the guys who came before you.. you never compare present day guitarists to the dudes in the past. Its just disrespectful. We stand on their shoulders to make the music we make and its like spitting in their face to turn around and compare SRV to Jimi. WTF.
Thank you Muddy Waters, thank you Johnny Winter. That's where Stevie Ray came from but was cut short. What a loss. A true blues guitarist behind Hendrix.
In terms of style, there's never going to be someone as unique as Hendrix again. But technically, Stevie's beyond Hendrix also in his improvisational skills.
Hendrix wrote the song you idiot. If it is a cover of a song it will sound the same. Stevie made this song his own when he played it. He did that with every song he covered. Can you tell me who originally wrote Texas Flood? I don't think so.
"man, Stevie took this song and turned it into the bets 8 minutes of guitar ever"
man, stfu. He plays the intro almost exactly like hendrix, if anything this should be a hendrix tribute, anyone that tries to say this is unique or in the slightest original is WRONG.
I can only imagine how epic a jam session Jimi and Stevie are having right now in the musician afterlife.

@Sockbot227 Yeah both of them were amazing, it is like they shared the same spirit, and they both left Clapton, Beck, and so many others speechless

Are you fucking kidding me? This is an incredibly ornate version of Hendrix' "Little Wing."
SRV turned the song into a large solo staying within the same tonality and progression of the original. Give it another listen.
