Lovely stuff...nicely done.....many thanks. Incidentally; this year's Ulster was mind blowing! A lot of the hedgerows have been cut back these days but Cochranstown corner still looks much the same......and with much the same 'camera angle'!
Thanks for posting! '77 was my first "Ulster", I was 9.Watched at the inside of Cochranestown with Dad. Ray McCullough was world class ( beat Saarinen at UGP ), pity he didn't go overseas.
Somebody mentioned the big purple 4-stroke of Sam McClements..damn after all this time I can still hear the sound of that bike...God Bless you Sam..you were a good friend.
LOL!..forgot to mention that bike became the green and then black 4 stroke and I also think it was red at one time...may have been same engine but different bike. it always sounded the same to me...LOL!
Thanks John. Fantastic footage, brought back so many memories. I was only twelve in 77 but these guys were my hero's. Tom Herron was and will always be a legend.
What memories, was there that year, rode up from Larne on the good old 250GT. Been overseas since 1980 but hope to get back next year and returning to the GP is at the top of the list. This is bike racing in its pureist form, best riders in the world.
excellent...we used to walk to dundrod from turf lodge every year as kids. we were knackered and couldnt go no farther than the hairpin...but wot a seat..smack bang in the middle of the hairpin..i can smell the castrol r...sheer bliss...fuckin memorys never die...
LOL....I wish it had have been, This was my first GP,in fact my first road race full stop,.....i can remember waiting to see the bikes, and expecting them to pass at around 30mph (you know how kids think)...WOW!!!! they nearly blew me into the next field!!!LOL...scared the life out of me LOL. I always waited for one bike, a big purple 4 stroke, and if i'm right his name was McClements?/Clements?..i loved the sound of that bike. Great memories. Thanks.
Sheer nostalgia!!!!...Brilliant stuff. But what has prompted me to comment is, i was there at the '77 GP, (i was 10 years old) and believe it or not, i would have been sitting right below the 'cameraman' when he was filming from the top of the hill looking down towards Leathemstown corner, now is that a coincidence or what? I can't see myself though, ..it would have been mindblowing if i could.
No problem, I'm just really pleased people are enjoying it, Tom Herron acknowleding me with the camera (and you!) with a wave at around 4min 30sec is pretty cool too.
Nice footage. i have a backlog of videos from the early and mid 90s of the grand prix and northwest 200 on vhs which i can't get onto the comp. Wouldn't mind getting some of it posted.
small faces AND joey dunlop!!! you got all my heroes in one post!
think i might have been at the practice for this GP as a child, could have been 78/79 also, things get faded with time but the noise and the smell of the oil stay.
Went down the deers leap on an X7 as a teenager and have the brown underpants to prove it. Road racing is a mans sport alright!
Thanks for the comment, for all the views I've had and the favorites added I thought I'd have a few more comments, but there you go! Must be very shy people viewing it!! John.
Thanks so much for showing this. I was probably there and I recognise Ray McCullough and Courtney Junk amongst the riders. Was the first corner of the footage Cochranestown?
Yes the first part of the footage was at Cochranstown corner. It was great to see so many people waving programes at Ray and Tom Herron on the last lap of one of the races. I don't think this happens so much these days, pitty.
i was there in 77 and 78 but when tom heron got killed i cooled my watching for a while

Neat. What kind of bikes are they? I'm guessing they're all 2 strokes, but what were the engines like.
