Daly said, schedule 2 after this man interrrupted the show, (a code word used on live broadcasts in case of an emergency: the cameras are turned to a neutral position and the sound is cut off).
You can see Gil Fates struggling to get this jerk off the stage and motioned with his left hand for Johnny Olsen to come and help. Johnny came running on the double and then you heard the verbal protests as they led him off. I always heard about this episode and after all these years, I'm glad I got to see it.
Oh, Melina. If you've never seen "Never on Sunday" make it a point to catch it. You will see an incomparable actress, personality and spirit. "Phaedra" was an excellent film and big success and showed Mercouri had serious acting chops. She has led quite the heroic life.
I saw Melina Mecouri on stage in "Illya Darling" in New York in 1967, and it was an enchanting memory. I think a clip of it from the Ed Sullivan Show is on YouTube. I urge everyone to see it if it's still there.
@prchristman Link? Hope someone hasn't taken it off YouTube. ... Looks like they might have. A search did no good. I'll try to search a bit more later.
I show this sequence to my English class college students to illustrate the uses of jargon -- live professional TV jargon ( 0:550:58 ) The 1st phrase means "Get him the hell off the stage." The 2nd means, "We have an emergency, shut off the microphones and move the cameras into neutral positions." That is exactly what happens in short order.
He startled Ms. Mercouri, the great Hellenic actress, Parliament member, and cabinet secretary ( 1:04 ). Daly looks scared only for a few moments.
Maybe the most infamous sequences in live WML -- ( 0:54 ) the guy who materialized on stage to give a dating service commercial. ( 1:11 ) Gil Fates, Bob Bach, Johnny Olsen hustle him off.
The police didn't arrest him, Gil Fates observed dryly. Apparently it is not a crime to do a commercial on TV.
Victor Borge proved his greatness as panelist that night. He never did great questions, but he knew how ( 1:58 ) to refocus the startled, distracted audience and lighten the mood.

At least the guy who interrupted the show didn't reveal the mystery guest's name. Would've spoiled everything

Arlene Francis's puzzle-solving turn of phrase at 4:15 is exquisitely clever. There, that's better.

Why did so many female mystery guests make "conceited" faces while at the desk? This one sure did!

Interesting show, anything can happen on live TV. I love Melina's dress by the way, wish ladies had more style today.

(1:56) "Are you alone on the stage?" - - - ".. but they removed somebody"... Borge is simply hilarious!
