So what did this guy do? Kill a body double of pj harvey and if she wants to return the favour, she will have to see to it the inturred corpse is removed and a body double of his is slaughtered there in its place and left with pennies in its eyes, so to began the monkey tree climb of evolution of murder group systemology peculiar to his way, climbing and clambering until such time as? Really? How far we have come, o mankind, how far.
we have learned to control ourselves under optimal conditions, and to drop all pretense of civilization when we must - but we haven't learned how to be the top species of the planet without ruining it - so: have courage & scruples, heart & mind - and do the right thing always, and encourage others to do the same - think ahead, join the political process, love your kindred, and hope for the best but prepare for the worst - we're a race of curious monkeys with anger management problems
This is so beautiful, I almost can't stand it, amazing and all so sad at the same time! Das Lied geht runter wie ein Glas Whiskey nachts um 3h! Und verlangt nach so viel mehr!
Mark and PJ are equally amazing on this song ... interestingly, they both share similar backgrounds growing up in rural regions .. Mark in the coal mining mountains of Virginia & PJ on a goat farm in rural southern England. Not sure what that has to do with the price of eggs in China, but it is interesting from the standpoint that both have created such amazingly creative, original & super cool music doing it THEIR OWN WAY. RIP Mark!
I just now discover (rediscover sort of) Sparklehorse and find out he killed himself. That beyond sucks for every reason imaginable. I've loved PJ for years and this is the perfect pairing. Such a wonderfully beautiful piece of music.
Hope someone put a penny in Mark's eye so that Charon could buy this huge masterpiece of music. Rest in peace Mr. Linkous, your talent won't be forgotten.
Yeah, all right I get the f*ckin picture. How many people need to correct me. I was aware of the tradition only going as far back as Victorian times and I'm now aware that it was indeed from a much, much earlier period. Get over it
Placing pennies over the eyes of the deceased predates the victorian era by a significant amount. If you consider that the pennies are to pay the boatman Charon to ferry the dead across the river styx it becomes apparent that the mythology is much older than victorian. The river styx and Charon are from Greek mythology, dating from the 1st century B.C. and earlier.
this music has such an incredibly powerful melancholy to it. it is obvious who the artists are who have the priviledge to step across that ether threshold of pure beauty . what is truly sad is how few of them make it back to report what lies just over the horizon. run fast and free mark..... you will always be respected for leading the way..... we may yet meet someday.......'' at sunrise the monkeys will fly...... and leave me with pennies .....in my eyes''...... i totally understand.....

I love Sparklehorse, and I like PJ Harvey, but Nina Persson also sings on this record, and her voice complement Marks MUCH better. I would actually prefer if she did all the backing vocals on the record. But hey, this rocks too.
just listening to Sparklehorse makes me sad, the way mark conveys his feelings is beyond anything I can understand, I can't explain it. I hope you've found peace Mark
I know the "unkown" person he was texting before he shot himself....and honestly, if i were fuckin that bitch i would probably shoot myself in the heart as well. She is the fuckin devil. Everyone that was a part of her life is worse off for being so. She left a wake of destruction where ever she went. I feel so bad for this man. It is unfortunate his path crossed with hers.... I hope she rots in whatever hell she believes in. And I hope he finds peace in whatever afterlife he believes in.
the first time i heard of mark linkous was last week when i heard that he'd taken his own life and this was the first song i listend to, its so very sad, the same thing happend when i heard of elliot smith
why does death bring this amazing Man's music to me and I am sure so many others....this is my first time listening to him...thank you flavorpill for the introduction. Mark, how I hope your pain finished and your eternal rest is peaceful
I listened to this song over and over when it first came out...it still gives me chills every time. I never made the Neil Young comparison until recently tho - has anyone else heard that? PJ Harvey is amazing, as usual (she's my biggest girl crush of all time)
Eye Pennies are a Victorian tradition (maybe earlier) of placing Pennies over the eyes of someone who is deceased in order to pay the ferryman the fair to take said person into the underworld.
Shit dates back to ancient Greece, man. In order to cross the River Styx to get to the underworld the dead would have to wait on the shore for the ferryman, Charon, to pick them up. They'd pay the toll using the coins their loved ones placed on their eyes.
i miss you

Eye Pennies are a Victorian tradition (maybe earlier) of placing Pennies over the eyes of someone who is deceased in order to pay the ferryman the fair to take said person into the underworld.
