  • They played this whole album at Sasquatch Festival 2009. I went to Sasquatch 2010 and 2011... And The Decemberists of 2009 is still the best experience in my whole Sasquatch going career.

  • that is Shara Worden singing, isn't it? of My Brightest Diamond fame?

  • @TheRossage99 Mmhmm.

  • @TheRossage99 It is. She is amazing.

  • 8 people are easily confused.

  • hello december(ists)

  • the queen! the queen is epic!

  • 'wanting' is old slang for diharrea

  • @Mithrandir901 you should kill yourself for that

  • Holy sweet Jesus is good to hear the Decemberists just that little bit more aggressive.

  • LOVE

  • I recall never hearing them until I went to cover as an EMT at their concert. From there on I was hooked... line and sinker. I love the fact they have such a diverse range of music and its never the same. I admit that this album only has a few songs I truly enjoy, while the others almost every song is good. But this song and also track two on this CD are masterpieces!

  • The entire album is pure genius.

  • does anyone know who the female vocalist is? i thought i saw a name somewhere, but I suppose not.

  • @insanelysirius Shara Worden of the band My Brightest Diamond

  • @wowlotsanames thanks. =D I think i might look up some songs from her man. she has a voice.

  • oh wow...these two sing amazing together

  • this chick has got some pipes!

  • what a sexy voice

  • I would never have loved this song if I had never loved you.<3 @akermani86

  • The backup vocals on this one are just lovely aren't they?

  • @kodiak423 meaning if music was as good and as nice as this, then we wouldn't want to fight

  • This is what real music is.

  • I listened to it five times and am now addicted!!!

  • @Fang7890 I was addicted the first time i heard it on The Colbert Report.

  • @InKa4484 SAME HERE!!!!

  • @InKa4484 Poser!!!

  • I love this song, the organ part makes me think of my 12 string guitar, it sounds quite similar.

  • Everyone always hates on The Hazards of Love. But, this song alone makes it a great CD.

  • @jenniferdurnell what? People hate on this album? What the hell is wrong with them.. its genius!

  • @jenniferdurnell I loved the entire album...

  • @DuffleMuffins I think it's decent, but The Crane Wife, Picaresque, and Castaway and Cutouts are completely flawless. I felt Hazards of Love was too Rock Opera/Metal overall. Colin Meloy is still a genius regardless.

  • @jenniferdurnell I think the reson why it was hated on so much was that it played with elements from genre's that aren't usually enjoyed by th people who listen to the decemberists the most. I have a relatively broad musical taste, and so I was able to enjoy those elements more than others.

  • @jenniferdurnell

wait, who ever hates on The Hazards of Love?

  • Just saw them in concert and it was great. They played this song and it was amazing. If you ever get the chance to see them do so.

  • If all music was like this, there would be no war

  • @ThomasRicketts You're fucking dumb.

People wage war over resources and borders. Not music.

  • Best album ever, best song ever.

  • i really really love the slowest part, so beautiful.

  • Still the wanting comes in waves . . .

  • The electrifying line between love and death is walked by this phenomenal group over and over again, in Colin Meloy's lyrics, in the music that almost paralyzes with its hammering truth, and of course, in the performing. Amazing!

  • What I love so much about this album is that, on it, not only are they excellent musicians, but they are also excellent ACTORS. I can feel every emotion that is and should be conveyed by each character consistently throughout the entire album. For example, in this song: The Queen is really damn intense, and you can tell she is pissed. And you can tell that William knows this, and is a bit hesitant to ask her for this, but he loves Margaret too much to NOT ask. Absolutely amazing.

  • friggin beautiful

  • LOVE her voice.

  • You can definitely hear the sheer wanting in William's (Colin's) voice...

  • @thegreyam Actually, they'd hit each other equally with the same force. It's physics. But it DOESN'T MATTER, because it was a figure of speech! Just sayin'.

  • The Colbert Report

  • @xXdemon467Xx musta been a quickie

  • I feel impossibly epic every time I listen to this song.

  • This song does an excellent job at communicating emotion through musical tone. This is an instance in which the tone fits perfectly with the lyrics, and the shifts are well-done.

  • who is the female singer ? i <3 this song

  • @TheKickasskatie Shara Worden, she sounds AMAZING in this song. She sounds really rock and sexy.

  • @slenderlovingcare thank u!

  • @TheKickasskatie Becky Stark (Margret) and Shara Worden (Queen) im pretty sure

  • I'm pretty sure it's an original guitar riff, zach, not a "mashup" as you call it. I think you might mean a sample. It's not that either.

  • who ever disliked this is duuumb

  • *like* just because 256 was just not enough for me

  • Im starting to compare this album to dark side of the moon/wizard of oz thing. There are some similarities. Very interesting itll be nice to see how this band ends up. Thumbs down if you will just remember its an opinion.

  • Such an awesome song! I would love to see them in concert!

  • The female singer is amazing! True rock and roll voice.

  • This song sounds 1000x better live. She has mad pipes.

  • what is the mashup with this song?

  • @zach92zach Mashup? Do you mean the difference between the guy and the girl? The woman is the mother and the guy is her son. You sorta have to listen to the whole CD to really understand everything. Basically, he's in love with someone but his mom doesn't want him to be...

  • @Alainainthesky no. i mean the mashup as in like...mashup of two songs. im not asking about the meaning behind the song, i mean theres a literally mashup featuring that sick guitar riff and i cant remember what it is

  • @zach92zach Do you mean the names of the two songs? (If so, the guitar one is called "Repaid," and the one with Collin Meloy "The Wanting Comes In Waves." Somehow I doubt that's what you meant, so please correct me if I misinterpreted your question.

  • Shara sing this song in a very PJHarvey style? nice voice, nice song

  • Shara sing this song in a very PJHarvey style? nice voice nice song

  • This may be the best song of all time. Like....no fucking joke.

  • I think this is their best song, period. I don't get why its not getting as much recognition as the others.

  • plz plz plz upload 1 with lyrics if not thank u for actually posting this 1

  • queen's a bitch! D:

  • I really enjoy this song...especially around 1:44

  • the chick have a sexy ass voice... damn..

  • 7 Dislikes....

Looks like ima need 7 bullets.

  • @holyday888 What song are you listening to? It couldn't be this one, because this song is beautiful fopr every second.

  • @TitaniousGrubbs I'm just not a fan of girl singers. AT ALL. haha. Really cool song though. The Wanting Comes In Waves is way better than Repaid IMHO.

  • @holyday888 I used to not be a fan of femal rock vocalists either. But things change. Shara is a great singer. Maybe one day you'll think so too.

  • ive shed a tear when i seen this song live

  • I LOVE this song the music is AWESOME. All those modern popular song's instrumentals are just blah. The Decemberist's songs are the BEST

  • um the song kinda sucks until shara comes in

  • Hipster scum.

  • Shara FTW

  • Man that riff... It's just so bad ass. Combined with that voiced its total awesomeness. I'm not a particular fan of the decemberist but I can't get that queen out of my head. She rocks.

  • The voice in the beggining sounds like Johnny Depp singing

  • His voice sounds like David Spade.

Her voice sounds like husky perfection that I could listen to forever!

  • why are the Decemberists suh damn awesome!? Can anyone answer that!?

  • Intense.

  • I absolutely adore Shara's part in this. Hell, I adore the whole song.

  • man that riff..... sounds like white stripes no doubt but sounds awesome

  • @lilpresto i was thinking the same thing

  • Beautiful.

  • This song is a fucking big bang!

  • you are fucking high!

  • Something completely different from Decemberists style... cooool!!!

  • this songs badass

  • All of The Decemberists' work is amazing. I love the lead's voice, it's so unique!

  • @moehoggy88 she sounds just like grace slick

  • OOoooh, I love it!

I never heard of the decemberists before, but I heard a part of this song on julia potts youtube channel and immediately fell in love with it!

  • she has a pretty voice

  • cool song + band. but i dont get the lyrics. is it about some guy asking to go out late at night or something? or is it some bible reference

  • The whole album works together as a story, you kinda need to take it all together.

  • Look up the lyrics to every song on the album and you'll understand... or maybe you should look up a summary.

  • The entire album tells a story. It doesn't make sense out of context.

  • AMAZING. the complete album is AMAZING

  • I always forget, is it Shara's voice or Becky's in this?

  • @Pillowchii that is shara without a doubt

  • Damn you methusela, you lied to me. Dynamic contrast my foot.

  • @Ginyustyle Cry more about it. And try "The Rake's Song" or "The Hazards Of Love 3 (Revenge!)" for different character's voices.

  • Her voice is perhaps the most attractive voice I have ever heard.

  • It is an impressive composition, I listen to it again & again, and each time I discover new things which make me like this song even more!

  • I've had this album since about the time that it came out, and this song just hit me yesterday. Like a fucking brick wall.

  • The D's have a way of doing that...been listening to them for, like, four years, and old songs STILL give new lessons. :)

  • thats cool

  • @bma1986

walls... don't move. I think maybe YOU hit the SONG. HOW DARE YOU!

    :-P

  • @bma1986 A brick wall wouldn't hit you. You would hit a brick wall. Just sayin'.

  • @bma1986 A brick wall wouldn't hit you. You would hit a brick wall. Just sayin'.

  • This woman has got chops!!!

  • i got "the wanting comes in waves" tattoed on me yesterday!

  • @niamhsarno that's sad.

  • @niamhsarno Nice!

  • @niamhsarno SO did my friend on her forarm.. and another decemberist quote on the other.. ballllin

  • This and Crane Wife are my top favorites by the Decemeberists. Even though you really can't pick a favorite with them, since they make amazing music all around. But this and Crane Wife part 2 are my favorite songs, and they're always on repeat. Viva la the Decemberists!

  • So, so awesome.

  • shes little but she sings low i think thats awesome

  • such a powerful passionate voice

  • I had never heard of this group before until I was in my friends car and he turned on his CD and this song was playing. I asked him what group this was so I went to youtube and searched up the decemberists and I LOVE this group.

  • amazing album...could listen to it over and over for days

  • I have. Try it sometime.

  • Yeah, I know, got a new ipod and this is the only album on it so far c[:

  • so much better live

  • amen. her vocals were insane live.

  • The singing in the background reminds me a lot of Arcade Fire, that could have been their inspiration.

  • What arcade fire song does this sound like?

  • my friend rebekka showd me... its the shit and so is she

  • Jesus sings this song when he is i on the cross

  • Why boazclark? Because he wants the last song he hears to be good?

  • Amazing song!!!! My friend jdfingers showed me this stuff. Incredible

  • the wanting does come in waves

  • Eh this isn't that repetitive

Some of their older stuff is definitely (although it's still good).

But this album doesn't feel too repetitive to me

  • I say that because I was looking for a certain song and went through like four other ones to get to it and they all were pretty much the same for the first thirty seconds. I like the story more than the music. Really, I wanted it to be good but I just couldn't get into it.

  • I completely understand. That's how I started out with these guys. I listened to them because of the songwriting, but soon became in love with the music, too.You will probably like them after a while. But if not, that's okay, of course.

  • Like Valencia?

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend showed it to me and now the decemberists are one of my favorite bands

  • yeah i love it too but the first song i heard was yankee bayonet. thats a great song. if you haven't heard it, listen to it

  • Echos of Grace Slick?

  • This album(and their others) are just musical genius. They match beats to vocals and lyrics, unbelievable, much respect for this band

  • Just heard today on 'WYSO' ,a favo' here in 'hi' in the middle,'o's' on each end.

Like it very much, depths and layers of perception with fine music...

    Thanks.

  • DAMN.

I love this album so much. This song blows me up every time.

  • i first herad this on the colbert report and i didnt kno the name and now i found it

  • i think this is the best song on the album ;)

thx for the contribution by posting comments!

  • Definitly dude.

  • @supperelias This and the queens rebuke :)

  • i saw them perform this whole album from front to back in Atlanta last night. it was incredible.

  • i know the concert kicked ass right?

  • spoooooky yhaaaow ya

  • I certainly hope you are a man of jest. The vocalist of this musical celebratory company is none other than Colin Meloy, lead vocalist of The Decemberists. The female vocals you are hearing belong to Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond.

  • Jesus. I enjoy the bookish-arrogance from the Decemberists....in which it is appreciated. But from the fans in question....Simply irritating.

  • The band is fantastic live. Man are they good.

  • What a perfect album

    I own it on vinyl

For those who havent heard it all the way through in one swoop i feel sorry.

These songs stand up great on their own And fall in line perfectly as a story.

Really these guys are raconteurs (in the literal definition sense not a band comparison)

  • Thieves? Rogues?

    Really?

  • I saw the Decemberists in concert, and this song was AMAZING! Shara Worden especially was really good. When she belts it out at the end... well, if you think this recording of her was good, she was legues ahead of it live!

  • Seriously I was shocked at how well she sung live. It was cool to hear this album live start to finish. This song was the highlight for me of all the concerts at Sasquatch yesterday.

  • Completely agree. If you want, I have a video of her singing that line at the concert they performed on Sunday in Montana. :]

  • amazing concept album that works better as a whole, although I can't stop listening to this particular song....

  • I first heard this on NPR radio - thought it was two different songs at first, but when the harpsichord came back a second time, I was like "Holy crap, this one song went to two completely different places and came back!! Brilliant!!!" And when the gal was all-out belting at the end... I almost crashed my car, it was that awesome.

  • It'll put starch in your shorts.

  • i think its funny because most of us first heard this song on the colbert report. and came here because you have one of the few good quality versions of this song (not a tape recorder held up to a speaker like in most other videos)

  • this is song is friggin amazing
