To Greg Carroll a legendary Maori roadie, and to One Tree Hill, a legendary place in NZ during 1980's to get a bit wasted. RIP both of you, and let this song remain special to Kiwis worldwide.
I know this song isnt about the tv show One Tree Hill. But in my opinion everytime I listen to this song I feel like crying... Because I know that the best tv show of all time is ending after 9 years!!! :'( For me it will never end...
@lovely90able The only reason I knew about this song was because the name of the very final episode of OTH (Season 9 Episode 13) is called "One Tree Hill" named after a U2 song
Chicago always has one of the best setlists on a U2 tour, unreal ! I've seen so many shows, but never saw this played live . Yes, you were truelly blessed they played this (great version too) although Bono had trouble finding the right lyrics, but I guess that only proves he's human after all . Anyway, it was a great tribute to Greg Carroll who sure isn't forgotten by the band or the fans . Bono mentioning him was a class act . From a proud fan .
What a pity what happened to this band. Once singing about hunger, greed and poverty. Today: having an enterprise in a tax-saving country and making ads for Louis Vuitton. This is how credibility passes once you get money and power. Sad, simply sad. How I admired them in the 90´s....
@kistarzan Hey motherfucker enough with your BO class warfare. If U2 made a trillion dollars and gifted us with works like this it would a push or fair. Now get that Obama cock out of your capped mouth!!! Fucking retard or Obamabot.Go fuck your sorry ass.
pity they cut the tree down, a protester damaged the tree beyond recovery. they have no intention of replacing the tree any time soon. that was a sad time as the tree had been an icon in Auckland for so long. use to try and be the first to spot it on the way in.
"The sun so bright it leaves no shadows...only scars carved into stone on the face of earth" I used these words on a birth announcement card of my son:-) Powerful words and beautiful music for ever...

Bono has some great comments we just taped in an interview on how important Victor was...and continues to be.
i was in london in 1981 just after the brixton riots and i heard U2s "I Will Follow" and i was hooked. I saw them at the SF Cow Palace in 1984 and now at 51 years of age, i look upon U2 -, along with Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Warren Zevon, Lou Reed, and Randy Newman as the angry Muses of our generation. Great Grandpa kingston from Ballydehob who emigrated to Riverbank California to farm in the early 1900s, i can feel your ghost..
But I say them “There are no impossible dreams but there is people incapable to achieve their dreams”
I make cover videos, and my dream is to become a Singer.
MUSIC is all I need to be for my life and able to achieve my greatest dream, triumph with it.
I’d love if you just give me a chance and stop by my channel Also if you could thumbs up this comment so other people can see it. That’s all it takes.
his song is such a work of art. the first team i heard it was after being left by my very first girlfriend i was just a young child. i cried at the line "boys speak their hearts, and bleed for it." :) U2 changes lives btw.
the JT was and still is a landmark recording...in a way the Blood in the Tracks of my college years generation...before this I listened to my parents Beatles/Stones era...now there was a band I could call my own...detractors cried sellout when this lp went mega...and yes side 1 is radio friendly...but taken as a whole...the lp has a dark feel...i remember staying up all night on a glorious moon soaked spring night in Fargo ND...making love to a woman I should have married...dreaming...sleeping..
U2 Rocks; Took leave while in the Marine Corps to see their concert in Anahiem, California. I hope they hold a concert here in Hawaii in the near future.

All the glitter and over the top is good, but its no rattle and hum!!
@drillsgtvee Well said. I was also 18 years old in 1987, ad I bought this album about a week before leaving for the Army that summer. I listened to it over and over again, I still love it.

One of my top 12 U2 songs, along with Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Cedars of Lebanon, Kite, Please, Lemon, Acrobat/Love Is Blindness (they're tied:), Hawkmoon, Bad, Drowning Man, Fire, and Out Of Control!
For those that don't know this song was on the "Joshua Tree" album and is dedicated to Greg Carroll who was part of U2's road crew, and was killed in a motorcycle accident while running an errand for Bono. You hear Bono mention him at the beginning of this song....
@brishi69 YEA!! I couldn't think of his name. The band was torn up when he was killed. they debated that Greg would want them to continue. As a huge U2 fan, most may not agree, but i think this is their best live song ever. Bono's voice was amazing and the perfect sound comming from edges guitar gives me goose bumps to this day. How they did not include this in the Rattle & Hum movie is beyond me.
@macphistoig Same here. This is one of their best songs ever written. Beautifully sad, said and played. They did not like to perform this live, probably due to it's personal value. I just saw a few playlists and was awestruck to see this equisite tribute to Bono's friend there. Can anyone tell me if there exists a DVD wih this exact show??? This is the one at SUN DEVIL STADIUM 1987 right?? the same as the Rattle and Hum DVD's With or Without You, MLK, Running to Stand Still and Where the Streets Have no Name... this must be the best show ever!!
@jpbaidal This is the the same Sun Devil Stadium show as Rattle and Hum, but it's an Outtake, not in the final cut. If you search for Torrents you can find U2 Rattle and Hum Outtakes (I believe there are 4 total DVDs worth of material)
This version appears on the VHS copy of their Greatest Hits 1980-1989 as a Bonus video. Not sure if it was ever re-released on DVD. The Sun Devil shows were among the finest during the Joshua Tree tour for sure.
great song, great spirit. BUT Bono is so absolutely pretentious, narsicitic and self-absorbed durring this time it's almost impossible to watch this. Like nails going down a chalk board.
@m00nracer Please explain how he was pretentious, narcissistic* and self-absorbed. I hear people say this all the time, yet they can't back-up their claims. All they can say is "he talks too much about politics and poverty" - all I can say to that is, there's nothing wrong with him using his celebrity status to raise awareness to global issues, but that's just my opinion.
I am a one tree hill. As I venture out onto this earth I am always surprised that I essentially do this alone. That at the end of the day through defense mechanisms my heart of darkness has kept something just for myself. I don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts.
Great Tune ....I worked at an underprivaleged kids camp for 8 years was also a fortunate camper for 4 years as child.....Big part of my life, This tune takes me there WAY TO GO Camp Maple Leaf.....Special Thanks to To The Canadian War Vets Creators of Camp Maple Leaf..
@tatertottattum #1, since when does views have a direct correlation to the quality of music? The Spice Girls sold over 10 million albums; doesn't mean they're any good. Don't let it bug ya, mate.

The year 1987 was a pivotal one for me, and this exquisite U2 masterpiece captures the unbridaled and unending spirit of my then-18 youthful self.
If U2's album 'Unforgeattable Fire' shaped my molten life, then 'Joshua Tree' forged it, steeled it.
And this particular song still rings powerfully true, now, some 24 years later, and will until my last days.

@jpbaidal This is the the same Sun Devil Stadium show as Rattle and Hum, but it's an Outtake, not in the final cut. If you search for Torrents you can find U2 Rattle and Hum Outtakes (I believe there are 4 total DVDs worth of material)

@jpbaidal

This doesn't get more views than Justin Bieber videos?
What the hell happened to music?
tatertottattum 1 year ago 90
@tatertottattum #1, since when does views have a direct correlation to the quality of music? The Spice Girls sold over 10 million albums; doesn't mean they're any good. Don't let it bug ya, mate.
#2, you looked at a Justin Bieber video? =P
