I didn't realize how smaller dwarf rabbits could be an issue... we got ours from the pet shop (one of two pets we've gotten from a pet-shop, by the way, so I don't get mauled XD). They said they were having trouble selling her because she was the runt of the litter. We took her home and this dwarf is still kicking after nine years.
@darkkit1994 This one is a 'Peanut'. It means they're underdeveloped. 'Runts' are just smaller in size, but they're healthy. People still don't know why 'peanuts' happen, but it is 100% fatal. They think it's due to underdeveloped digestive tracts.
@siowjenn i feel so sorry for you, i will be getting a rabbit but it may be a giant one, i mean..a really really big one, i hope it lives a long life :S
@AngieCupCake88 It's ok..She died 1 day after I got her...it's the pet shop owner's fault for not providing clean surrounding for bunnies (causing the bunny had parasites) but I couldn't return her and get my money back as I know they will just let her die..So I took her to vet but she still couldn't make it..she used her last breath to kick me when I was trying to force feed her. *SAD* by the way,Good luck to you!!!
@ipodtouch4gen I'm afraid he is correct, for Peanut Lops are born with the double dwarf gene, this rare case causes them to be born too small, and with bone abnormalities such as a lump on the skull and a crossing of the back legs that doesn't let them hop and forces them to walk (which causes them great pain and discomfort), they usually die due to one of the many malformations (ex. circulatory failure)
@Barfetta3000 tho select breading in this case causes a more frequent spawn of peanuts it's not uncommon to see peanuts born form other non dwarf rabbits and hares such as the European hare (a virtually human-effect free species)
xSarahxBabeex no this isnt a netherland dwarf.. a lot of people say that the small rabbit is a netherland dwarf, BUT it is a netherland dwarf depending on the shape NOT THE SIZE.. Oh yeah, good guess though.. And this looks like a bunny my cousins offered to me but i declined. T-T
@melbearable lop is short for lop eared, like there are mini lop the smallest, then dwarf lop alittle bigger, then french which is the largest there may be a few more but im not sure
@TheUrbanRunner when they call a rabbit a peanut it means he is sort of the runt of a litter they are extremely small and underdeveloped and often die
People don't breed them on purpose, they are born among healthy babies, but they are born underdeveloped, so that's why they die. Breeders don't say "HAY! Let's breed Peanuts! They're fun while they last, lol!" They just happen.
lol look up what a peanut is before you reply. People dont breed them that way, its just some turn out that way because they are born undeveloped. That still doesn't take away from their cuteness though!!! =]
Peanuts are not bred the way they are.. some just turn out that way. 25% of them do. Its the way they are and we can't really do anything to stop it. Trust me, if we knew how to stop it we would! It is quite a shame they have to die so young, but its how it is.
I didn't know the person was talking about runts. I thought he was talking about defects normally associated with being a lop bunny. =_= It was a misunderstanding.
Hate it when people swarm me for misunderstandings.
I did not say people bred runts on purpose. I meant people bred mini lops on purpose. It's somewhat sad to me that certain breeds of animals that have higher rates of defects are being bred, like mini lops, or other animals. Like certain breeds of animals bred to have wanted characteristics sometimes can have physical setbacks, or higher chances of having runts. That's what I meant.
It's a genetic disorder. Peanuts are born with compromised digestive and immune systems, which is why they die so quickly. They're actually pretty common in smaller breeds.
no one is gonna understand lol. but good to know this stuff just in case your son has different appearance and your suspicious your wife is cheating lol.
lol in other words it means they are born with an undeveloped system and die within two weeks or so. About 25% of all bunnys usually are peanuts. Its sad, but true.
Oh no don't worry about. First,. they have to be bred by dwarfs, two dwarfs, and if they are, you might. But don't worry about it, it usually doesn't happen. If you want m ore information, you could call the vet to see if theres anything you could do to try to prevent it.
He died because he was a peanut.. a peanut is not a breed. its a rabbit that was born undeveloped. They usually only live 2 weeks, he was lucky to have lived 5. They are extremely tiny, and sadly, know one knows why they are born that way or how to stop it. So it is as it is...
Thats just a little smaller than the size of your typical DWARF babies! so adorable!
And asforall these certai death theories, I dont think so!
I breed the little things and have come accross such many times! Just wein it VERY carefully onto a formulated milk for baby bunnies, as the bit about the genetics is true as such it will not help to allow it too much of mother's milk.
lol its a type of rabbit that is born undeveloped. About 25% of all dwarf rabbits are born a peanut. Its sad, they usually only live to be about 2 weeks old

The reason they die young is because of the way they are bred...to be that small. It's completely inhumane and wrong.

Dwarfs have two genes:
DW - non dwarf
dw - dwarf
A DWdw is a true dwarf whereas a DWDW is a lot larger.
In mating between a DWdw & a DWdw there is a:
50% chance of DWdw - true dwarf
25% chance DWDW - larger dwarf
25% chance dwdw - peanut
