This reminds me of a combination of Fallout and the Animatrix. One of the eeriest and darkest animations I've ever seen other than a couple of animes. Russians have some incredibly creative, if dark and creepy talent.
even though it has some awkwardly explained moments, I think the scene with the bird trying to fly into the idyllic landscape with green pastures is probably the most moving or emotional scene I've seen in an animated short in a long time.
@Rain777Dog But look at how they used to live. A dehumanizing dystopia. Religion is also mocked and I think it's implicit that the war was caused by capitalists. Of course I'm trying to guess what message the guys that made this were trying to spread.
E: "Not one would mind Neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly And Spring herself when she wake at down Would scarcely known that we were gone"
@SergeiSovietUnion1 and besides what Unownshipper said being right you have to realize that this was made based on what Russians believe Americans are like. The two main problems that it has that is not what Americans truly, first is on thanks giving we don't treat new years like a national holiday like our July 4th. The other is we don't like the idea of a big machine that looks quite scary and has a scary voice as something to have around... we would find it quite upsetting really. (char. lim)
It's really not fair to compare this, an animated short film, to a common cartoon. This probably had a far better budget, art department, and writing team than a typical afternoon cartoon. Besides, the 2 things have different goals: a cartoon seeks to provide distraction and amusement while this inspires the audience to reflect.
Lastly, the short story that this film is based on, "There Will Come Soft Rains," is a piece of Western Literature by American author Ray Bradbury.
@SergeiSovietUnion1 even though this is an american story, that is based in an american city after it was destroyed by soviet russia, way to ignore the beauty of both the animation and the story, i think the whole idea was that there are certain things that cross cultural boundaries, the aftermath of a nuclear war is one of them.
@marcabfleetcommand Yeah, also, both the USA and USSR employed the Mutually Assured Destruction doctrine. No matter which country fired first (the short story doesn't put the blame on either side), the other side would automatically retaliate, wiping both countries, and all their allies off the map. Many short stories at the time made a point of not blaming a side, just pointing out how bat shit crazy the idea is, and the many ways this could go wrong (like cosmic rays fooling blast detectors).
They should really make a compillation of all this great russian animation with GOOD translation and let the people know this great master pieces. It's imposible to find fine copies and is a real shame.
DUDE this is based on the book "There will come soft rains" its in the future and the house runs everything like the maintenance and stuff. The people who own the house are dust because of a nuclear explosion that happened. The robot house thing doesnt know everyone is dead yet.... I read a excerpt thingy from this book.
This isn't a perfect adaptation of the story (I would've loved to see the silhouettes described in that, with the family caught mid-movement), but it captures the feel of it really well. Go Russian animators!
@Vaicurious actually this story inspired a house in i think germantown in fallout 3 where a robot tries to wake its family and recites the poem that gave the story its name, among other things.
In the story, the people were destroyed by a nuclear war. Their silohettes were still burned into the side of the house. The machines continued cleaning the house, making food, ectect. The house was then destroyed by a fire. Since the house had continued to draw baths and such, its emergency water supplie was not enough to put out the fire.
@HolyPokenerd It's not supposed to be anything like the story. It's called a loose adaptation. I, for one, find it to be very creepy compared to the original.
I guess this is what might happen in the future with so much technological advancement that robots will surpass humans, destroy them and outlive them. Or there was a nuclear war ... that would explain the ashes. =S
Depressing.. although I wonder why only the humans turned to ashes, and nothing else inside the house? Or does that have significance to a message I'm not getting...
@sergeontheloose old news, the original fallout was inspired heavily by the game wasteland, and this story among many many others, fallout 3 was especially inspired by the book "the road" which was then made into a movie heavily inspired by fallout 3.

This animation has haunted me for years! Now finally I can see it again in a adult mindset. It's ust as frightening and powerful as it was in my childhood.
I think after it blinded itself it was still trying to kill the bird, it heard the tweeting and tried to attack on sound alone. Killing itself in the process.
Ironic, we are living this film presently. Slowly killing our own species in a social pantomime of false safety through consumption. Ending with our grandchildren's dissolution though environmental and epigenetic degradation.
Would that robot have gone apeshit if a bird flew in the house in a non-apocalyptic setting? If it thought Mrs Mclellan was in the chair it had no problem smashing her across the room to try and catch it.

AJleKcaHgep 11 months ago
yawa20yawa 11 months ago
@yawa20yawa Дом остался пустой, т.к. люди были снаружи во время взрыва - в рассказе же описывалось, что на стене дома остались выжженные тени хозяев.

Would that robot have gone apeshit if a bird flew in the house in a non-apocalyptic setting? If it thought Mrs Mclellan was in the chair it had no problem smashing her across the room to try and catch it.

@sventoby If there were people in the house, they could just turn the robot off. It only had attacked the bird because it came in without permission.
