I cut my teeth on getting this era's smog strangled cars and trucks to run well (or at least better LOL). The Thermoquad was actually a very good carb if it didn't suffer warpage or damage from backfiring. Their main issues were float level and misadusted metering rod pistons, and older ones would develop internal fuel leaks when the epoxied main jet well caps came loose.
Another contributor to poor running was the delayed vacuum signal to the distributor due to the OSAC, ...more to follow
The "Orifice Spark Advance Control" which caused a huge flat spot during acceleration). Bypassing this (which is illegal and I'm not suggesting to do so!) would remedy this.
Lastly, the EGR systems were prone to getting carboned up which could lead to either non-functioning or even hold the pintle off the seat causing exhaust gas to recirculate all the time (partially or otherwise). The EGR vacuum amplifier was also prone to failure.
I am really curious as to why the 440 when restored to original specs did not operate correctly. No question what you did to it was the perfect treat for the 440. Congrats on keeping the squad alive. Well done!!!
I lived for the T.V. show every saturday night at 8 pm, never missed it. I will be attending july 9th in carson to finally see the station and the vehicles. I sure wish kevin could attend. My aunt use to date Dr. Early when they both lived in lancaster. Pa. Whats his name?
I like how Paul's narration was conversational and natural. Much more enjoyable than some who is wooden and over-rehearsed (or stammering and repetitive).
I always thought that the original Squad 51 had a 318, which would have made it a dog, of course. The starter didn't sound as whiny as what we heard on the show, though that could have been a dubbed-in Chrysler starter on the show.
Great to see the beast nicely restored. I always loved that truck and the show.
The old Carter "Thermoquad" carburetors weren't the greatest back in this day. Most of the time a backfire would damage the bakelite (Nonmetal) centerpiece. The 440 was an outstanding engine though. I still work on them once in a while. (They are still out there)..
That's amazing, my wife and I hope to make a trip down there (we live in southern Oregon) to see the squad and engine 51. I grew up watching Emergency as a kid (they were reruns in the 80s by the time I got to see them) my wife and I have been watching them regularly for the past month or so and we're on Season 4. Great job guys.
