@FallonFilmsInc Hey come on now. If watching someone like Chet Atkins play Wildwood Flower is a masterclass, having this guy explain this is surely a lesson. Real guitarists don't need tabs or charts, all they need is a piece of music.
@srvgravesdime watching Atkins is NOT a masterclass, guy. Watching a masterclass is a masterclass, don't argue semantics if you don't understand them. Just like this is not a lesson. Any polarizing statement like, "Real guitarists......" shows how uninitiated you are. And the guys above that took 15 and 20 years to get around to this? I suppose they are 'real' guitarists? Real guitarists take decades to get around to concepts that have been around for about 100 years?
@FallonFilmsInc If you don't learn a lot from watching and listening to the greats, then I can't help you. A Jeff Beck concert, to me, is the equivalent of a masterclass. You're a dunce for the simple fact that you're complaining about free knowledge. Whether it's a lesson or an example, quit your whining and just learn something. If you don't want help, then learn it by ear. The internet wasn't around back when Merle Travis, Clapton, Hendrix, Yngwie, Coltane, Mingus, (etc) were learning music.
@srvgravesdime you're a dunce because you haven't googled 'masterclass'. Once you pay for one you'll understand the distinction, son. You have to have a 'mastery' of the concepts so the 'master' can explain. Idiot.
@FallonFilmsInc I literally know what a masterclass is. Do you know what a metaphor is? Do I have to type as if I'm a valley girl, "like, like, like," every time I try to get my point across? These "real" guitarists I was talking about are relatively humble and thankful. You aren't humble. You'd rather criticize the guy who's trying to teach you things for his deficiencies than thank him. Good for you.
OK, look. Merle Travis only used his thumb and one finger for the most part. Chet used a thumb pick and 2-3 fingers, same with Jerry Reed. CLiff Gallup used a thumb pick with 2 finger picks. Setzer- thumb and 1 finger. It's all considered Travis Picking. Whether or not you call it hybrid, nashville claw, banjo claw, or sloppy rockabilly, it all amounts to the same thing. Now shut up and play!
Jim Heath, hehe. I like how you didn't mention his stage name! That was really a great lesson! Thank you very much! Most guys doin lessons on here are just like "hey do this" w/out showing you how to "do this" So thanks again!
Excellent lesson. I travis pick the Setzer method with the pick tucked in my index. I never really got a clean and consistent sound from the bass notes. Glad to see a lesson that gives the basics. Thanks!
Go ahead. point your video camera at a bright window and then sit between them -- and scratch your head and ask, "Gee, I wonder why my face is all dark...???"
I enjoyed the short low E riffs between the chords as much as learning the picking. You're going pretty fast but I almost have 'em figured out. I think. Wish there was a way to slow down the video for the left hand action. Maybe I can figure something out on my own. Lot of fun regardless. Thanks for posting it up.

Dude that was BADASS! Jeeeeez it's so hard to do both melody and bass line at the same time - but I'm going to practice! Thanks for breaking it down bro...
oh man, thanks a lot I really mean it, you don't know how much so called vids. I looked up and it was just people showing off and never really explained much.
It would be real nice if someone would show what exactly the left hand fingering is doing in relation to the picking of the right to make this sound good. Everyone talks about the righ but everyone skips the left. Please show me what you are doing there.
Cool video. I can't seem to get my pinky finger working like that, but everyone's different, right? And if I'm not mistaken, is that a 5120? Very nice sounds coming out of that hollowbody.
Fantasic lesson! Thanks, man. Hey, am I imagining it or are you changing it a bit when you play it faster? Like maybe accenting different notes or swinging it a little? It doesn't sound straight when you play it fast. Thanks again :-)
Travis picking is actually just a reference to the steady bass pattern while finger picking. Yes, I use "hybrid picking" but it is still considered Travis style.
That's hybrid picking, not Travis picking. Merle Travis just used his thumb/thumb pick and his index finger. You've got the Setzer/RHH thing going, which is just as wicked.
I can beat the comment below mine... I been playing 20 years now! And I just learnt something new. Wicked! Ta!

Well I learned something and Ive played for 15 years...not very well, but still. Thanks :)

His left hand isn't doing anything but holding an E major chord. His right pinky isn't being used.

Here is another way to think about it:
1= low E
Sooo/ outer strings first (1+6) then inner strings (3+5) back to outer BUT this time (2+6) final inner (3+5).
surfstomp 2 years ago
So, it's 6 1 4 2 5 1 4 2 ? Sorry if this is backwards.. Higher E is my 1, low E is 6.
