When A'isha said that, she wasn't talking to the Prophet (PBUH). She was correcting some of the Prophet's companions, after his death, when they misunderstood a matter relating to interrupting someone's prayer. The correct hadith has a completely different meaning. If you need to know more, I can provide a translation from both Bukhari & Muslim.

The acts of Muslims today can't be used to judge Islam. Same is true for any religion. What the Quran (2:65-66) says is that some Jews who disobeyed and didn't observe Sabbath were turned into monkeys and pigs, but this is not to be applied to all of them.

The commentary on this particular hadith says that the hadith is denounced due to problems in its chain of (cont.)

Muhammad didn't limit his marriage to four wives.
The practise of POW women captives being given to soldiers as war booty came about simply because there were no holding places for them at that time.
When the slave population could't keep up with the demand of the muslims, new slaves were stolen from non muslim lands at great costs, including loss of life and great suffering.
And It was pressure from Britain and France after WW1 that put an end to slavery in muslim lands.

Muslims who had more than 4 wives had to divorce some of their wives, but the Prophet was excepted from that because his wives are not allowed to marry anyone else after him, so if he divorced them, they wouldn't be able to remarry.

There were many mistakes, but that condemns them, not Islam. It's funny that you've mentioned France, because when Napoleon conquered Egypt, it was being ruled by the Mamluks, who were actually slaves. The view of slavery in early Islam is nothing like even the most recent western views.

When A'isha said that, she wasn't talking to the Prophet (PBUH). She was correcting some of the Prophet's companions, after his death, when they misunderstood a matter relating to interrupting someone's prayer. The correct hadith has a completely different meaning. If you need to know more, I can provide a translation from both Bukhari & Muslim.

@Itchy2000uk I wouldn't like it either if it made women equal to dogs and donkeys, but it doesn't. As for Jews being likened to pigs and dogs, some Muslims indeed say so, but Islam doesn't say that. The acts of Muslims today can't be used to judge Islam. Same is true for any religion. What the Quran (2:65-66) says is that some Jews who disobeyed and didn't observe Sabbath were turned into monkeys and pigs, but this is not to be applied to all of them.

Hadith is a sophisticated science, and not all hadith collections contain just authentic hadiths. Many contain hadiths with different degrees of authenticity (or inauthenticity), where the reporter always adds his/her verdict according to many factors. The commentary on this particular hadith says that the hadith is denounced due to problems in its chain of (cont.)

The opposite is not allowed in order to preserve lineage. Otherwise people can't tell who their fathers were. It was a totally acceptable practice in the old days. Nowadays, the absolute majority of Muslims are monogamous.

@Itchy2000uk 2) Yes. The world relied on slavery then. Islam gave several rights to slaves and strongly encouraged freeing them (Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, freed around 40,000 slaves in his lifetime). Captive women who were taken as slaves also had rights. It's a general consensus among Muslim scholars now that this is not allowed currently, and that the purpose of those practices enforced by Islam was to slowly end slavery altogether.

When the Prophet (PBUH) explained that verse you refer to in Quran he said that such beating should be symbolic, such that it doesn't leave a mark or any pain, and that it should be using something not bigger than a "meswak" (a small branch from a tree that is still widely used as a toothbrush by Muslims, usually 4 or 5" long). Also, he said that the good among his people won't resort to this.

You refuse to believe me, and instead, brought as evidence the claim of a woman who according to the hadith was lying about her husband. The sources of our understanding of Islam are the Quran, and the Sunnah (sayings and actions) of the Prophet (PBUH), not the actions of anybody else. The Prophet never beat his wives, nor did he approved any violence between spouses.

Just because a large group of people believe something, doesn't make it true. Another example is that Christians think that their God is the true God, and Hindus think that Christians are wrong and vice versa. So your rebuttal doesn't work on that level either.

However, if information proves to be true from a different source, and it turns out to be true, then that source has a certain degree of reliability.
The Quran states that the earth is round before any prominent scientist ever proved it. Perhaps other things are true as well in the Quran.

@fandanstan There might be ambiguous scientific parts in the Quran, and maybe they even got some science correct, but sadly they got a lot wrong too. Why did they get a lot wrong? Because they were writing about the science they knew at the time, and they were wrong on some things. If the Quran was perfect then there would be formulae like E = mc^2 etc. Sadly the science you talk of is often ambiguous.

Its a symbol used by some islamic countries because they were influenced by or had historical ties with the Ottomans, a turkish muslim empire that adopted the crescent symbol from the Byzantines after they conquered Constantinople (modern day Istanbul).
