Guy is trying to make a comment about the problems in Detroit as a tribute to the people that live there. This song is a great tribute to the history of the city and area from someone from Montreal! Good for Sam for doing his research about the riots etc in the Motor City. Beautiful song
im from windsor right across from detroit and i can tell u detroit isn't like that anymore, thats why it says 67 thats when detroit was good i guess, now if u look a detroit or windsor in that case both crappy lol but amazing song
I think the song is less about Sam Roberts' intense love for the physical city of Detroit as it is for the history it represents. like the lyrics say the city has a history that goes from fur traders to motown music.
Detroit isn't creepy- could be dangerous if you decide to go out walking at 3am! Downtown Detroit is great-restaurants, sport venues, fabulous architecture. Sits right on the Detroit River. Visit Detroit and use common sense! I miss Detroit but I do not miss Michigan
I agree, Detroit isn't all bad, and downtown is better than it was 10 years ago. By the late 70s through part of the 90s the downtown area was limited to a few good pockets like Greektown, but now you can hang out in several parts of downtown and have a good time. It's just not shopper friendly like Toronto or NY!!
I lived in the D for 18 months, now back home in Tucson AZ. I miss downtown, the river...the canal that was my backyard! I wouldn't trade my experience in Detroit for anything, and will never go back.
Especially acts from Vancouver. Sam Roberts is good, and there's a ton of good ones from Vantown who don't get the time of day from the rest of the country. Listen to bandcouver and find them out.

I'm Canadian, and I personally am bored by Sam Roberts' music. Granted there are great Canadian musicians - Neil Young, Rush, Joel Plaskett, Joni Mitchell, The Band.
I don't consider Sam Roberts to be one of them though. Opinion!
Fair Enough, I'm canadian and I partly agree, I really liked his LP inhuman condition before he signed to a major label but once he signed his sound changed and I don't dig it half as much as before! Yet i still give him props for building the following they have! but I really like Attack in Black, Arcade Fire, City and Colour, jenn Grant, all the artist's you mentioned and Matthew Good.
I'm try'n to sound all cool and indie I love shit loads of mainstream music. I just don't like the production on the albums that came after inhuman condition, chemical city had some bright moments and he still kicks ass live all the same!
Going downtown Detroit tonight to see Sammy bring Motown to it's feet and show them how Canadians bring the house down. That's where "All the Good People" will be going.
PLEASE DO NOT forget The Tragically Hip, OLP, Neil Young, Rush and April Wine. If anyone has the chance to see Canada Rocks the musical by all mean see it and dig on the Canadian music. Dig Sam Roberts,Matt Mays and El Torpedo.......................eh
I'm from the states and have recently realized most if not all the music I love is from Canadian bands. City and Colour, Sam Roberts, The Constantines, Matt Good. Luckily I live in Buffalo, NY so I get to enjoy it more than some others. Just saw City and Colour a few weeks ago and Sam Roberts is coming late February...can't wait.
That's soooo great to hear man!!! So being Canadian, I'm not biased then. lol. Do give Matt Mays, & the Trews a honest chance. Check out an Up and Comer.... Carmen Townsend & the Shakey Deals.... what a voice on this girl....
i agree with basicly every comment here, Canada is where music IS weve got some of the greatest bands from here and the sad part is that they dont get enough recongition anywhere else in the world.
another thing i like is that you dont see fake crappy pop shit bands, just real music. and the musicians accualy deserve the succes.
the states has great music too but it's hardly recognized either. most people like hip-hop, dance pop, or they just don't care and will listen to whatever they're exposed to.
yeah, theres alot of that commercialism crap here to but itry to avoid that. and im sure its like that in every country, they all have their homegrown succes bands that is basicaly unheard of in the rest of the world
need we all forget big sugar ? wide mouth mason? joydrop ? good grief, if ya pay attention, canada always has had awesome rock and roll pouring out ! this new sam record deserves awards. so does the new matt mays record. keep it up canada ! we'll show those yanks ! btw, we should all burn everything nickelback. how embarassing !
Check out Sam Robert's Detroit '67 Video. It's also shot in Detroit and has some killer footage from the 1967 Riots along with a lot of other significant historical Detroit footage. Either search for it or click on the "dodworld" video response.
Somebody should tell this guy he sounds like a modern-day Ray Davies. I'm sure he'd take it as a compliment.
