I don't know ... Corelli is my all-time favorite and usually he sings everything just right, but here ... well, I think that Pavarotti is better suited for this particular role. As a matter of fact I regard Pavarotti as the most amazing Duke of Mantua ever. IMHO, his 1971 Rigoletto recording cannot be surpassed ...
@ GermanOperaSinger, Mr. Corelli did a good job however both his breath support and clarity are lacking. Pavarotti was a bit showy at times but there's no doubt that his voice technique is superior.
@Eklectiq2010 I think you are really wrong. Corelli had a strong technique and a great voice, not to compare with Pavarotti's. You shouldn't forget that he was bored and tired of being an opera singer, and short after this exibitions he retired!

Even Franco Corelli had his off moments. Is it really necessary to bash everyone who makes a mistake or whose voice isn't 100% at the moment of the recording? Corelli was human, just like all of us, but he achieved more than any of us ever will. An American tenor failed to sing the high note in Nessun Dorma here a couple of years ago at a concert I attended. He'd sung a beautiful concert, but completely missed that Bb. I applauded him even louder than I would have. I'd have done the same here.
Obviously, poor Senor Corelli did not have the best of days, when he did this.... Please compare with other recordings of this aria available on youtube from the late 60s and early 70s, which were his peak years. No comparison !
One recording is out with the original score, down on the last note in La Donna! it was recorded in 1984 with Gruberova and Shicoff and is on CD and no high note for her in the quartet and caro nome as written, they all could have sung the high notes but it is the original score. Philips classica , Sinopoli, cond. and he wanted the original and got it, even Parmi ends down. The Baritone is bruson with Fassbaender in the cast also, fine recording.
No 1 ever sings this aria as it is written in the score. That in my opinion would be more impressive musically, the end phrases go down at end of the aria. But those phrases would be far more sustained than most would sing. Also as I remember it the beginining should be more staccato but no1 takes any notice of Verdi. This like all the ad lib's of all operatic tenors is impressive!
there is no cadenza in the original score you can sing what you feel is right and perhaps you would not notice if it was flat or sharp if you were in the room. Also somtimes even the temperature of a room can have an effect on the pitch.
There is no cadenza WRITTEN because Verdi said "If I write a cadenza into the music, a poor musician would exaggerate it. I want a good musician to notice that it could be tastefully inserted into the music."
Are you insane?!! Corelli had 100% passion, Pavarotti had 0%. He sings with his soul, he doesn't roar...Pavarotti is mechanical and boring, at least in his later years.
@GermanOperaSinger It is clear you don't like Pavarotti ( a matter of personal preference ), but Pavarotti's voice was a straight line of equality and beauty, praised all around the world, making him the richest and most successful tenor in history after the Great Caruso. If you think Pavarotti's crystal clear belcanto was "roaring", then you must really dislike him personally, especially since you've posted videos of the few times he screwed up in performances. Jealousy has a name. It's you.
I never said Pavarotti 'roared'. My comment was a response to someone who said Corelli 'roared'. And Corelli's performance here is obviously quite bad - he is old and singing something he never should have touched even in his prime. I was speaking of Corelli in general, who sang with conviction and sincerity. Why would I dislike Pav personally? I don't even know him personally. I happen to think he had a fantastic voice and technique, but I stand by my previous comments that he was boring.
Everything you said here about Pav I agree with, but that has nothing to do with musicality and everything to do with technique. While Pav had great technique in abundance, he was sorely lacking in artistry and musicality, in my opinion. It's a subjective matter though. The video I posted of Pav cracking was not in spite, just an interesting recording I thought I'd share. Lastly, I don't appreciate ad hominem attacks. So with all due respect, shut up.
@beelzebub667 Well, maybe it's because he had a LYRIC voice? Comparing a lyric voice to a dramatic one just shows your own ignorance. Your argument isn't very solid. Stop getting all your 'opera' knowledge from a few youtube clips.
@GermanOperaSinger you can't say that about Pavarotti. I love both Pavarotti and Corelli. they were the best 2 voices in the history of mankind. their performances were different in different song perhaps because probably different song ment different thing for each other. nessun dorma in the voice of Pavarotti is incredible. and o'sole mio in the voice of Corelli in perfect too. keep it simple don't say that about Luciano Pavarotti or start singing better than him.
@GermanOperaSinger I want to buy the DVD-set of Rigoletto with L. Pavarotti as Duca and I. Wixell as Rigoletto. Both are great in that production. It's a great production all of it.
I agree with you : 52 is not old for an opera singer. But some youtube users think Corelli was too old and too tired in 1973 to sing this aria. i disagree with them on that point. See Pavarotti : he was at top even at his 71 years.
Franco Corelli was tired in this concert, but all the tenor have bad performances. You don't know anything about opera and sing, Pavarotti has problems with his voice at 71 year. Pavarotti sang in Costa Rica, was terrible, He had problems all the night, was terrific...
I am glad to see that you are a specialist of classical music. Thank God there are people like you who know everything and are able to tell others what to think ! But sorry for my ignorance, I persist in my declarations even in Costa Rica, Pavarotti was a genious...
Wank83, I agree with you about Pavarotti, I think that Pavarotti was a good and special liric tenor, but you can't compare Pavarotti with Corelli, both have different voices...
And yet Alfredo Kraus died at 72 with a perfectly-preserved voice and hardly any bad performances.
The difference? Pavarotti and Corelli sang EVERYTHING, including what was out of their Fach. Kraus knew how to choose his repertoire. The other two did not, and sang constantly with "the capital" instead of "the interests."
Wonderfull singing voice for a man of 52 years old ! Even if the "youtube" purists do not agree, I still think Corelli had a powerfull voice. His name will stay in the decades of our memory...
Don't be so cruel to him : Franco had a powerfull voice in this concert. We judge a tenor to his power, his colour, not necessarly to the highness of his tone. Still he could easily reach the B. But posterity is often cruel to great singers...
I would have loved to see you walk out on the Met stage after Franco had sung "Celeste Aida with a Bb-flat in Forte-pianisimmo and tell the audience that this guy has no technique, this is not his repetoar and he has past his prime he´s 52 years old on this clip but write a letter to Pavarotti and ask him about Corelli´s technique.
Keep this on YouTube forever! I love every second of it and find the so called discussion about who is the best and who should sing what so boring and so irrelevant. Enjoy instead the divine gifts of this singer. It is crazy to criticize Corelli. The other mentioned tenors are also great and fabulous. No need of comparing.
you really have to wonder what possessed him to sing this. it's just not him. one gets the feeling that someone with a lot of money or power asked him to because they like the aria and didn't care what was best for Corelli's voice. oh well.
Andrea Bocelli has had Corelli as his teacher and I think your comment chose that you´ve never heard Franco before. I don´t think Andrea who´d dream of comparing himself with Corelli as an Opera singer. But Bocelli´s voice is very beutyfull but Corelli had maybe twice as big voice as Andrea and on a stage in the spinto repetoar you gonna need that strenght.
Saying Corelli is better than di Stefano or di Stefano is better than Corelli is crazy. They are completely different. Corelli's voice had so much dramatic heft, and best suited towards heavier roles, like Manrico. Di Stefano's voice was so lyrically beautiful, and, early on, was absolutely thrilling. I'm a big admire of both.
That said, I have to admit, this is one of the worst La donna e mobiles I have ever heard... almost as bad as Bocelli, if not worse. Corelli's shouting half the time, and turns a seventeen note scale passage into a something quite ugly made of five or six off-pitch noises. The character of the Duke is COMPLETELY missed. Maybe he sang better La donna e mobiles, but this is, I'm sorry to say, really, really bad.
(For the record, I do consider Di Stefano THE Duke.)
There were 2 great Dramatic tenores in the middle of 20th century Del Monaco and Corelli, but only one ROYAL, that was Del Monaco. He was much greater than his rival!
For that you do not know Franco Corelli well, you know that at that time already it suffered "the disease" that would end its race in public having to dedicate itself then to education. Other recordings of "donna and movile" exist, by Corelli. If you listen to them you will understand it. You excuse, I resort to the translator, because otherwise he would be worse. Gracias
Why you COrelli-fans don't symply admit that for some operas(such as Rigoletto,Boheme...)he wasn't good!!!...he hadn't the right temperament...please be honest and admit it!
There are many tenors that sing this aria better than Di Stefano. For example Caruso, Gigli, Volpi, Filippeschi, Del Monaco, Kraus, Pavarotti. I agree with you about Corelli. This aria is not for him.
The duke is not a gentleman, he is not Edgardo or Gustavo III. Del Monaco and Pavarotti put in their voice the fire of libertine passion. In my opinion Di Stefano is too sweet and serious. The first duke was Mirate, a dramatic tenor.
I personally don't like Corelli. he couldn't calibrate the singing well.He only had beautiful high notes...but the problem was how he sang the arias "before" the ending high notes....horrible!
What the hell are you telling about. The Corelli's Filato is absolutely NOT great. If there was a thing corelli didn' t do well it was Filato! Please listen to Di Stefano!
Ok, you have a point, but Di Stafano is not in the same class as Corelli. He all so sang far to many roles not suited to his fach. Corelli was thrilling in every role...
Di Stefano is not in the same class because he' s a class above Corelli.Di Stefano was thrilling in every role he sang...and he could do much more roles than Corelli, who had too a heavy voice and could not adapt it to every role.furthermore Pippo had a superior musicality than Corelli.last thing:corelli was a good bariton.
I'm sorry fabriou, Corelli could sing higher notes with a lot more comfort than Di Stefano, who incidently wrecked his voice singing too many dramatic roles. He sang Manrico for gawd sake, a role that Corelli made his own.
thanks god tgere are few people that consider the "high"notes the most importand thing for a tenor.you are one of these few people. Most important in the "art of singing" is good phrasing(which corelli hadn't and PIPPO had perfect),temperament(which corelli didn't have so much as Di stefano),fire, perfect diction(of which pippo is considered the best and corelli the worst) and the art of word-singing,of which Di stefano was the master
Sorry fabriou, but you called Corelli a baritone, I justhad to point out that he could sing higher notes than Di Stefano in some comfort. Comparing the two is rather a waste of time, Corelli is a dramatic tenor, where as Di Stefano was a lyric. Besides the duke, I do not think he could another Verdi role... Corelli of course could sing Bel Canto roles to great acclaim ;-)
I understood, you are a Di Stefano's relative. But come on, how can you compair Di Stefano with Corelly? Are you crazy? A great voice with a little voice? I think sometimes people are crazy when I read those kinds of comments.
Corelli is the worst tenor.much better are Di Stefano,Del Monaco,Bergonzi...They all have a good diction(Di Stefano a perfect diction),a good phrasing.Corelli wasn't even able to phrase properly...but go on beeing impressed by high notes.P.S:crazy people invents realities...you have imagined I m a relative of Di Stefano anf taken it for granted ...but I'm not(I wish I were!)
You're a clown Fabriou, you told me privately you are Italian and I can't understand. So show me you speak Italian, parla italiano, caro mio, fammi vedere quanto sei bravo!!!
You know, you guys waste an awful lot of energy arguing. Your observations might be better used improving or altering your own performance, especially for vocal preservation & longevity (of your performance). Corelli had that. And, I see it like a horse race: there are a lot of fine champions but they don't win ALL the time & yes, some races (distances) are better suited to some champions than others. Hope you get the metaphor!
Bark, bark, bark, whoofy tone here. Phenomenal singer at his best, but this is just stilted, overly loud and un-musical.

"It is crazy to criticize Corelli", I agree!
Moffolover 4 years ago
Why is he God?!
He has no any authority!
sandrik100 4 years ago
Keep this on YouTube forever! I love every second of it and find the so called discussion about who is the best and who should sing what so boring and so irrelevant. Enjoy instead the divine gifts of this singer. It is crazy to criticize Corelli. The other mentioned tenors are also great and fabulous. No need of comparing.

forgive him
corellilover 4 years ago
you really have to wonder what possessed him to sing this. it's just not him. one gets the feeling that someone with a lot of money or power asked him to because they like the aria and didn't care what was best for Corelli's voice. oh well.

Maybe the criticasters can better listen to Bocelli!!
corellifilippeschi 4 years ago
Let the Thunder cut me if Bocelli is not far better!
sandrik100 4 years ago
Andrea Bocelli has had Corelli as his teacher and I think your comment chose that you´ve never heard Franco before. I don´t think Andrea who´d dream of comparing himself with Corelli as an Opera singer. But Bocelli´s voice is very beutyfull but Corelli had maybe twice as big voice as Andrea and on a stage in the spinto repetoar you gonna need that strenght.
Bjoerrelli 4 years ago
consider yourself cut. Corelli is fantastic.

Listen to Corellis version of Nessun Dorma. Now.
All though, I agree.. in this clip he was VERY weak.. I was not impressed..

VivaCallas 4 years ago

Fabriou listen to corelli when he was younger
He blows them all ALL out of the water

For that you do not know Franco Corelli well, you know that at that time already it suffered "the disease" that would end its race in public having to dedicate itself then to education. Other recordings of "donna and movile" exist, by Corelli. If you listen to them you will understand it. You excuse, I resort to the translator, because otherwise he would be worse. Gracias

incredible.

I agree with you fabriou, Di Stefano sings this aria much better, Corelli sings this aria half-tone down, anyway Corelli is one of the top 5 tenors.

Horrible singing.......Bonisolli sang it much much better
fabriou 4 years ago
Corelli was really unable to sing this aria!listen to Di Stefano!
fabriou 4 years ago
Why you COrelli-fans don't symply admit that for some operas(such as Rigoletto,Boheme...)he wasn't good!!!...he hadn't the right temperament...please be honest and admit it!
fabriou 4 years ago
You can see and hear that Franco is past his prime here. In his heyday, he was supreme!
ucrebel59 4 years ago
Even Franco is human I guess. He does not sound nearly as good as I'm used to hearing him. Still a great filato in the G# and a powerful high B.
FacePaster 4 years ago
Only DI STEFANO could sing this romanza well...all the others...even Corelli are ridicoulos
fabriou 4 years ago
There are many tenors that sing this aria better than Di Stefano. For example Caruso, Gigli, Volpi, Filippeschi, Del Monaco, Kraus, Pavarotti. I agree with you about Corelli. This aria is not for him.
baritolo 4 years ago
Pavarotti and del monaco sing it better as Di Stefano?????!!!!!You dont' t really know what you
are telling about...my brother!you make me laugh ah,ah,ah...:-]....but even if you have "strange"
musical taste...let's be friend...let's give the world a chance of peace!ciao
fabriou 4 years ago
The duke is not a gentleman, he is not Edgardo or Gustavo III. Del Monaco and Pavarotti put in their voice the fire of libertine passion. In my opinion Di Stefano is too sweet and serious. The first duke was Mirate, a dramatic tenor.
baritolo 4 years ago
I personally don't like Corelli. he couldn't calibrate the singing well.He only had beautiful high notes...but the problem was how he sang the arias "before" the ending high notes....horrible!
Bonisolli was much much better
fabriou 4 years ago
What the hell are you telling about. The Corelli's Filato is absolutely NOT great. If there was a thing corelli didn' t do well it was Filato! Please listen to Di Stefano!
fabriou 4 years ago
Ok, you have a point, but Di Stafano is not in the same class as Corelli. He all so sang far to many roles not suited to his fach. Corelli was thrilling in every role...
jrwilmott 4 years ago
Di Stefano is not in the same class because he' s a class above Corelli.Di Stefano was thrilling in every role he sang...and he could do much more roles than Corelli, who had too a heavy voice and could not adapt it to every role.furthermore Pippo had a superior musicality than Corelli.last thing:corelli was a good bariton.
fabriou 4 years ago
I'm sorry fabriou, Corelli could sing higher notes with a lot more comfort than Di Stefano, who incidently wrecked his voice singing too many dramatic roles. He sang Manrico for gawd sake, a role that Corelli made his own.
jrwilmott 4 years ago
thanks god tgere are few people that consider the "high"notes the most importand thing for a tenor.you are one of these few people. Most important in the "art of singing" is good phrasing(which corelli hadn't and PIPPO had perfect),temperament(which corelli didn't have so much as Di stefano),fire, perfect diction(of which pippo is considered the best and corelli the worst) and the art of word-singing,of which Di stefano was the master
fabriou 4 years ago
Sorry fabriou, but you called Corelli a baritone, I justhad to point out that he could sing higher notes than Di Stefano in some comfort. Comparing the two is rather a waste of time, Corelli is a dramatic tenor, where as Di Stefano was a lyric. Besides the duke, I do not think he could another Verdi role... Corelli of course could sing Bel Canto roles to great acclaim ;-)
jrwilmott 4 years ago
I understood, you are a Di Stefano's relative. But come on, how can you compair Di Stefano with Corelly? Are you crazy? A great voice with a little voice? I think sometimes people are crazy when I read those kinds of comments.
fabris77 4 years ago
Corelli is the worst tenor.much better are Di Stefano,Del Monaco,Bergonzi...They all have a good diction(Di Stefano a perfect diction),a good phrasing.Corelli wasn't even able to phrase properly...but go on beeing impressed by high notes.P.S:crazy people invents realities...you have imagined I m a relative of Di Stefano anf taken it for granted ...but I'm not(I wish I were!)

Corelli the greatest!!!
fabris77 4 years ago
You know, you guys waste an awful lot of energy arguing. Your observations might be better used improving or altering your own performance, especially for vocal preservation & longevity (of your performance). Corelli had that. And, I see it like a horse race: there are a lot of fine champions but they don't win ALL the time & yes, some races (distances) are better suited to some champions than others. Hope you get the metaphor!
