This performance really sums up how great this band was and at this time in their career. 4 individuals all special, without any part, the song would not have the same impact. Usually the drummer is insignificant, but in this case, as cpails524 says, without Moon, this song and performance would not have been anywhere near as great. 4 very unique and talented individuals. A very special band.
Hi kevman1ification.....I too was a big "Moon" fan. Keith & his family lived next to each other, and their children Mandy Moon, and Zack Starkey grew up playing together. So Zak, Ringo Star's son, saw Keith play a lot. So who do you suppose took over some of the drummers spots after that? Zac Starkey, Ringo's son. I saw them together when we still had John Entwistle. It just seemed right for Zac to be their drummer. And he worked so well in the band in the band, Zac became their drummer
I just couldn't get into the Who after Keith died. They never sounded right to me after that. Nobody played or plays like Moon. He was a LEAD drummer.
Moon was a prodigy for sure and then suffered (died) from an his obsessions. I like early Who that shows Keith at his raw best. It's barely restrained anarchy, which is why the Who actually mattered.
@skyline2009100 I don't know; he is one of the greatest. I really like Nick Mason of the Floyd; Mason and Moon have a lot of similarities in their styles.
alot of drummers can rip off a great solo or great fills, but they seem out of place and like they are showing off. Moon did it in perfect flow with the music. Alot of modern songs would sound just as good (or bad) with a simple beat in place of the fills. The Whos songs would sound wrong without his fills, because they fit so perfectly with the beat and music. Not flashy, just raw power and perfection. That is what defines the difference between a musician and someone who just bangs drums
@goodolarchie absolutely. Listen close to the drums on "We're Going Wrong." Ginger doesnt repeat one single drum line. Every single drum line and fill is different.
@montereypopfestiva67 Yeah a subtle and underrated track off that album. I realized the other day that its Baker singing "Blue Condition," shown have known by that thick cockney.
This is my favorite visual performance of Keith Moon. I am just blown away at how completely effortless the whole thing looks for him. It's just plain flowing out of him, and he is totally, completely in his element and loving every second of it. Also, I think this is the most camera time John Entwistle has ever gotten. I never thought I'd see a video of a Who performance where John got a ton of shots and Keith got barely any camera time. It is quite interesting and also quite refreshing.
@crescentfreshbret Yeah I've noticed that, too bad for Pete. But back then, nobody had ever seen a drummer like Keith in those days. He was the first drummer you would watch instead of listen to. He was just amazing!
i friggin love watching keith moon drum. he had such a natural feel. some people thought he was lacking discipline but i respect it as just another style altogether
@lanzermonarca Wow...just looking through the comments here and I know I'm late but I honestly don't give a fuck. Newsflash buddy: Basing music off looks is the reason music is in its shit phase right now, because we let the kids with no talent but look "cute" or "hot" become the superstars. Rock n roll isn't a fucking beauty contest.
Shit, i think you guys are forgeting sometthing, you all talk about keith, well i know he is the best drummer, but, you are forgeting WHO wrote this song, WHO created the windmill, WHO played that angry powerful guitar style that gave the who that sound, basically, you are forgeting, WHO CREATED THE WHO
I honestly think if Moon did not come up to the stage back in '64' is it and tell roger i heard your looking for a drummer and i can play much better than the one you have.If Roger said get away from me kid i think the Who would of have alot of problems being one of the greatest bands on the planet.Roger found his missing link Moon no other drummer could play for the Who with there style of playing.Moon in his prime was the greatest drummer ever.Live he's 10x better saw them twice in the 70s.
What a great band .Seen them many times around north london and herts in the 60,s The Trade Hall Watford was the venue i saw them most .They changed things despite being around with The Stones and Beatles doing great stuff.
Gawd, I remember seeing this on Shindig. Thought that Moon was outrageous with the target sweater and the way he just flayed the kit - flay, not play though he did that very well indeed. Thanks for the posting Mr. TheBeatles01.
Probably one of the very few times I've seen a Who vid where Entwistle gets more camera attention than Townsend. Not a bad thing though, I love all four of them; none of them could have been replaced, even though eventually both Moon and Entwistle were. But it was never the same after Moon died, and certainly not without the Ox.
In the documentary "Six Quick Ones" Rob Ladd points out that Keith Moon's drumming had an up tempo beat to other drummers which balanced Pete's down tempo. There will never be a drummer like Keith.
I kind of wish Keith stuck to a regular drum kit, I hear alot more explosive, fast energy when I listen to earlier stuff. I bet if he and Bonham went head to head, using the same model of the drum kit, Keith would win....Though I gotta say, Keith still owns at using 2 bass drums.
Hard to believe the two old and bloated sods who played the super bowl are the same ones getting down here. The Who has had some great jams but it's really time to hang up the mic when you can't even hit the notes that made you famous. Face the facts boys, the band died the day Moon did.

You said it my friend. People actually died in their concerts. And they're know for being the loudest band ever live. Trash Metal my ass (sorry for metal lovers, I like it too but not compared to this). The best bass and drums players ever!
Keith makes the impossible look so easy; a true sign of genius. He looks so young in this, but he's dead a little over 10 years later looking much older.
@mrtamberineman123 well hell the who have said it themselves........the way keith played........they had no choice but to pick it up just to keep up with him lol
@mrtamberineman123 Keith Moon was definately a huge part of The Who but I would say Zak Starkey is a worthy successor. Although he was taught by Keith and is the son of Ringo Starr so you can't really expect much less.
wake up, it's the british invasion, what do u expect haha, american girls were going crazy for all these british bands and suddenly elvis and chuck berry were not cool to them anymore, it all started with the beatles, british invasion: a big part of rock n roll history!!!!!!
the difference between the beatles and the who was the attitude the who brought to the show. 40 years ago(yes 40 YEARS), it was frowned upon to go mad on stage. The Who said to hell with that and produced some of the best music ever made along with THE best performances ever seen. I love the beetles music, but as far as capturing the collective voice of a a very changing generation the Who take the taco. P.S. Ringo was also a fantastic drummer.
the beatles never went destructo on their instruments but I wager that they were just as rowdy during their hamburg days when they were a dancehall band before brian epstein cleaned em up..
Keith Moon and Ringo Starr were BOTH great drummers.
But had those two switched bands -forget it. Each was MADE for their respective bands. Nobody could play Beatles like Ringo and nobody could have made the Who what it was like Keith.
@j4bologna1998 LOL ringo didnt make norhin really. He didnt wrote yellow submarine or octopus garden he only wrote dont pass me by. I love music and i apreciate the beatles and the who very much But ringo was completetly replaceble man
@TheRacoonStudios ?? Who cares if Ringo didn't write YS nor OG?? The gauy was only stating that Ringo's drums lines were perfect to define the Beatles, just as Keith's to define The Who... No, Ringo wasn't replaceable... Thing would be very different without Ringo... And I'm saying this as a person that really doesn't care about the Beatles...
@bassnicola You do know Paul played drums on some of their later hits, right? I won't deny that Ringo's timing was impeccable, but I'd argue that his usefulness depends on the period they found themselves in.
Of all the singers that have been imitated over and over again I don't think anyone has ever come close to sounding like Roger. He was and is unique and amazing.
Keith Moon, probably one of the few drummers who wasn't just considered 'the drummer' of the band.

wake up, it's the british invasion, what do u expect haha, american girls were going crazy for all these british bands and suddenly elvis and chuck berry were not cool to them anymore, it all started with the beatles, british invasion: a big part of rock n roll history!!!!!!

minute and a half before you get a close-up on Townsend. Strange. They gave lost of close-ups to Daltry, Moon and even Entwistle.

They're just keeping track of their pinup boys. Rumor has it Townsend's nose needed a special camera to cover it (ha ha, just kidding).

the difference between the beatles and the who was the attitude the who brought to the show.

Nobody could play Beatles like Ringo and nobody could have made the Who what it was like Keith.

i am a fan of the beatles but ringo and keith moon are in two different category. keith moon is a 10xs better drummer than ringo starr

@j4bologna1998 When Kenney Jones was the drummer,The Who wasn't the same

@blutocampbell I totally agree with you there! Granted I still like Kenny Jones, but it was a very different band for those last 2 records.

@j4bologna1998 LOL ringo didnt make norhin really. He didnt wrote yellow submarine or octopus garden he only wrote dont pass me by. I love music and i apreciate the beatles and the who very much But ringo was completetly replaceble man
TheRacoonStudios 1 year ago

RockC67 2 years ago
The same applies for John's bass playing, Pete's guitar strummings and Keith's drums. That's what made them incredible, no one ever sounded like them.
Also notice this video is one of the only where Keith uses a hit hat... and he doesn't hit it !
