Why on the tv credits at end of programme they have cut out 49sec to 119sec Thats the best Bit! They use to play it in the 70s when especially there was a dramatic ending
That's Ronnie Hunt trembling away there on trumpet. Stan Roderick had been booked for the session but deputised it out to Ronnie. Stan would have played it beautifully, but Ronnie made another kind of job of it, which, in the end, fit the show perfectly.
Listening to this and seeing the black and white scenes reminds me of staying over at my Grandma's place in the mid-sixties. Poor old Gran wanted me to go to bed but I protested and said that "my Mum said I can stay up 'till 8 o'clock", whereupon Grandma just laughed and said OK. I fell asleep in the chair within about 2 minutes!
I haven't watched the normal series since the late 1990's as it is utter rubbish now. It was made by Granada, now ITV studios and it has been ruined by the generic ITV1 branding,as have the other regional companies,Granada was my region, and the saddest thing is they are demolishing Granada TV studios in 2012, and moving to Media city,Salford. I don't suppose the C S set will look the same. Just as well i don't watch the show now. R.I.P Granada and the other regional companies.
@DaveyC95 I agree its sad that most of the ITV regions are no longer in use however in the STV region we still have our own branding and idents, but Glasgow produce very few home grown shows now, obviously we have the regional news, the odd galic show and a scottish chat show in the 5pm weekday slot, besides that there is very little independance from ITV. Perhaps it was better for other regions to go when they did instead of suffering from London control slowly scaping their various projects.
@DanielBaigrie Well we all know who is to blame don't we?...Thatcher and her Broadcasting Act 1990, and the greedy bosses of Carlton that started off the franchise takeovers...And who is in charge of ITV now? Archie Norman, former Conservative MP for Tunbridge Wells and Asda boss who sold that company down the river off to Walmart, (formerly Wal*Mart)for millions...It could all have been avoided.
I remember this theme from when i was about three years old, from what i now know to be Elsie Tanner's final episode in 1984. It has been repeated a few times on the now defunct Granada plus satellite channel showing early episodes and on a Saturday focusing on one main character in the street, mainly one of the matriarchs from five various episodes.
A million times better then the TERRIBLE re -recording they are using currently. I have not watched Corrie since the day it was introduced. When will ITV learn???
i live in the U.S and can not get this show on TV here, however I do remember hearing this song once when I was little. and being a musician of bass, drums, percussion and vocal, i must say this version is very beautiful. it reminds me of that big band sound that will never be forgotten. this would be an easy song to play i think.
@anakin1255 If you live in the USA you might be able to get the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) on cable. It plays Coronation Street every day. My mom has been watching it for years.

Why the faux scratches on the soundtrack? I have this in perfect quality without that clicking noise. Fair enough on the visuals, but you shouldn't mess around with the audio.
@sambda I didn't mess around with the audio at all. I assume that it was originally taken from an old vinyl record or something. Doesn't really detract from the music though, so stop moaning ; )
When you take a few minutes to listen to it properly instead of letting it barely register in the background, you realize what a beautiful, well-crafted piece of music this theme is.
I've only ever heard the full version of this wonderful theme song once before-sometime in the early summer of 1970, when they announced on the radio that the actor who played Jack Walker had died in real life. The "Street" is THAT big over here in parts of Canada and our family has been watching it since it was first shown on the CBC in 1966.
@petclark1: Back in 2005, we visited Canada. We watched the episodes on CBC in an evening - how bad are we lol When we visited Banff, we went into a small confectionary shop on the main street and my girlfriend (now my wife) and I got chatting to the cashier. She was a student who often visited the UK and we got talking about Coronation Street. She wanted updating on the storylines that were currently being aired in the UK. It was most surreal.
@Lynxboy252 I'm just as bad. Back in '96, while lunching in a small cafe in the Austrian Alps, an English family overheard us speaking and introduced themselves. They were surprised that I recognised there Lancashire accent. I explained it was only because we watched Corrie. My friend had been away from the table when we first started chatting and upon her return thought we were all long lost friends until she realised I was pumping the nice British family for upcoming Corrie storylines.
My god, when we were kids nothing could clear the room like the opening strains of this on the television. We hated Coronation Street! But my oh my, what a lovely tune.
I'll bet this was played in the Northern smoky clubs of the 1950s. Clubs full of old dears drinking stout and look 20 from the back and 60 from the front.
Thats how Tony Warren got his ispiration for Bet Lynch.
I remember the day when the end theme tune started from 1:02 mins - prefer that
@LollieSmith I can`t agrre with you More ,From 1:02 was the end ,but it started to wear off, and i was only used on sad endings, also i knew it was time for bed after i heard the end of corrie, GEEZEEE that was some years ago, 8/10 at that age told it was bed.time! but now 48 ,And slowly the theme is getting back to good old days
Does the newest version have a minoret of a mosque and then some local radicals blowing up this den of western decadence (The Rovers Return)for allah ? Then Dev praising the death of all those bastard whites ?
Corrie just is not what it was, just check out the old network episodes from the 60's with Elsie,Ena and Hilda, brilliant. Its a shadow of its former self...
The piece isn't called "Kaleidoscope". Kaleidoscope is a music pubisher which produces orchestra arrangements. The piece is simply the theme to "Coronation Street".

is there a Drum n Bass/Dubstep version of this?

Haha, I like how it's all nice and mellow, then suddenly a picture of a brutal kicking destroys the whole atmosphere.
Unintentional, I assume, but non-the-less comic timing perfection.

This should be used on the 50th Anniversary! Brilliant! Timeless! Was the music originally called Kaiedescope?

I thought he got paid a little more than that. I bet he's kicking himself for not accepting royalties now though. Think of the money he'd have earned.

The music from 1:00 onwards should be used on every episode (it used to be until ITV drastically cut back credits).
