  • I once tried to circuit bend a TV... Got one hell of a shock from the + Anode xD Next time I'll be sure to discharge it..

  • What exactly is it doing..?

  • I want it. I need it. It's required just to stare at! I'm making one.

  • this is so sick!

  • The first time I took apart a TV I was 16 years old. I shocked the shit out myself. The TV hadn't even been plugged in a long time! Luckily, it was a very small TV and it didn't fuck me up. After getting shocked, I learned why it happened AND that a TV can hold a charge for a very long time. DO NOT FUCK WITH TVS unless you know what you're doing. Stick to keyboard circuit bending.

  • You can see the scope filtering through the camera, As it's interfearing! COOL BEANS!

    R.I.P. Scatman John

  • cool

  • Man I'd love to sit that ontop of my amp, having that stuff going whenever I put on a song.

    Good work indeed.

  • Man. I dont even ahve the guts attempt circuit bending a goddamn tv. :P

  • good choice +1

  • man, i haven´t heard this song for years!!

  • You can use this as a great demonstration of clipping (where the scope bandwidth (hight) is limited and when the scope line swings too far it becomes flat at the top/bottom allowing you to see a virtual 'box' around it)

  • i love it i want one.

  • Scatman John - Scatman

  • This is really good ! ! ! 5*****

  • Scatman

  • great job on the TV Oscilloscope

  • how did you do that amazing

  • This is much cooler than the tube-tv oscilliscope lol

  • yeah cool. that is what i need for my beat. where can i find it?

  • Just search "Scatman" In the Search Engine.

  • damn, i was hoping for poop.

  • I wanna poop TV! :D

  • That's one way to make an old and not working TV into an oscilliscope...

  • LOL AT 00:50

  • Dude, wtf, everybody knows this song :)

  • you can get some crazy things when you circuit-bend things xD i've never seen a TV do THAT before..,...

p.s. my uncle is a DJ too!

  • i guess it won't work with my old dvd player, right?

it would be great if I could connect my projector to a circuit bend dvd-player... on gigs and stuf... would look quite cool i think...

  • SCATMAN!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's THE HAL 9000 HOME EDITION!

  • shitttttttttt

    thats mad :)

  • ima scatma*BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • wouldnt it just be easier, and far less dangerous to just BUY an osiliscope? Not to mention that you could probably find some interesting things to do with it, and make an interesting thing to hook up bent items to.

  • Hey.

I already have a scope for working on electronics. I use this thing for live shows and DJ stuff. I made this with about $3 worth of parts on a t.v. from Goodwill, so I'm really not out anything if it dies.

  • @alphamone a GOOD educational grade scope can cost $2000. Minimum. So, no... it wouldn't be easier to just buy one.

  • Thats a cool project

the only thing I would do differently is to build a sound to light circuit that uses a microphone to pick up the music, so that it isn't connected directly to the sound system. If anything was to blow (or catch fire), it would be the TV and not an expensive sound system :-)

  • is it snowing? Or is that particles of ??? flying everywhere?

  • so... A TV thats now an oscilloscope? NICE!

  • I would LOVE to have a tv like that.

Just too bad I don't know sh*t about em to do this.

  • It's The Evil Tv!

  • LOL

  • i love that song

  • So it's more like a radio than a TV?

    SCHWEET.

  • SOOO COOL!!!!

  • yo, what song is that????

  • I think it's just called Scatman. And it is by Scatman John. I guess just search for it.

  • scatmans world actually

  • dude. this would be rad for live gigs!

  • Thank you, It is. :)

  • lol funni song

  • LOL how did you Scatman?

  • First, beware of the fact that the DC supply return (B- or 0 VDC reference point) in virtually all modern televisions (except some battery-powered portables) "floats" at about 70 volts AC with respect to "earth" ground. Also, beware of the high voltage (30,000 volts) from the flyback supply. Although output current from modern sets is low and not normally lethal to a healthy adult, it WILL BITE HARD and can trigger lethal reactions in cardiac, pulmonary, or neurological patients.

  • Other hazards include fire, as someone else already mentioned, and serious (expensive) damage to audio equipment due to impedance and/or voltage mismatch, ESD, etc. It would be a real shame to blow up a $500 professional PA system, incurring a $250 repair, trying to create "cool effects" using a junk television.

  • Thanks for the facts. I have used this t.v. live several times and it works quite well. These were shows where all the bands used the same amp system and the t.v. was running for most of the night. But then again, results will vary with the t.v.

And even then, my speakers only cost me $80 for the pair. :)

And don't knock the cool effects! I have received lots of comments from people interested in them. People see the wavy lines and think I'm a science wizard.

Plus.... my t.v.'s not junk.. :(

  • Did you use a sawtooth generator? If you did, Can you send the circuit to me please? I really need one for my project.

  • I'm sorry, but no. I used the very complex and hard to find Scatman generator.

What you are seeing IS the song. There are no external oscillators being used. Just a line-in signal.

  • That is essentially how the CRT works normally. I'm pretty sure it uses electromagnets.

  • Looks like maybe your camera was circuit bent as well...

  • lol, you mean the lines? I think it does that because its pointing at a t.v.

  • LOL, Scatman

  • haha funny song choice, but choice work all the same!

  • thats works as an oscilloscope??

answer please, btw, good work man!

  • Well kinda, while it does display an incoming signal, it shows everything as a sine wave. It wouldn't work for electronics testing if thats what you were asking. I use it (and my other tvs now) as part of a light show when I'm playing a show or DJ-ing. Thank you though.

  • i made one and im not dead just my tv blew up

  • Glad you didn't get hurt. I've also heard of t.v.s catching on fire. It might be a good idea to let these things run for a while outside after you make them, just to be sure everythings ok.

  • its quite easy you just remove the wires around the end of the tube and put a electro magnet and charge it whit music

  • lol, scatman.

  • I love those. I've wanted to do one, but I've been pretty scared off by the "YOU WILL DIE" warnings. What level of difficulty would you put this project at? I'm happy with my little battery-operated (a.k.a. YOU WILL NOT DIE) nonsense so far... but these are so great...

  • I was kinda put off by the warnings too, but I was just really careful. I had it unplugged whenever working on it and wore long rubber dish washing gloves. Really though, by just following the instructions it isn't all that complicated. Although I think there might be a mistake in the plans though because one of the pics. says horizontal to audio in and the written plans say vertical to audio in.

  • Cool - I'll have to try it out with a thrift store TV sometime. Your video certainly makes it look inviting...

  • I'm the Crapman :P

  • lol. I guess "scat" is another word for it...

  • WOW! COOL!
