Jon, your video is solely applicable to a Sony digital system, which is primarily used by Regal and AMC. Smaller chains often use REALD (XL polarizer only has up to 10% light loss) or Master Image (up to 35% light loss). I'm not sure where 85% light loss would ever occur but I also don't know much about Sony or Dolby 3D.
3D "lenses" is also not a correct term unless you are referring to film. A polarizing unit is placed in front of the existing lens to make an image 3D for digital presentations.
am i the only one who just keeps the 3d glasses they gave me after watching 1 3d movie and buying a ticket to a regular movie and sneeking in the 3d movie using my old 3d glasses.
Jon, THANK YOU for telling me this, yesterday I went to the movies at patriot place and I saw the2 rays of light from the projector and I got my money back thx a ton
Just so you know....the filters are removed when a 2D is played on digital projectors. If they are not removed, then the theater is at fault. The double picture lens is standard for 2D or 3D presentation. The filters are to placed in front of the lenses before the 3D show.
for 2d films or 35 mm. But once 3D is installed the screen is silver. They change the screen so it is brighter and much more vibrant. so i guess it depends on where you go really. some older 3d projectors have what you are talking about and that can happen so you re right about that Jon
the projectors aren't cheaper, they cost more but its worth it. We use master image GDC projectors where i work and they only have one lens with a rotating wheel in front of it for 3D films. its no comlicated task to switch from 2d to 3d, also if we did play a 3D film when its supposed to be 2D the picture would be a bright pink and it'd clearly be obvious. As for the brightness thats not true either, you see when a 3D projector is installed the screen is changed. Normally the screen is white
I guess I'm lucky because I live only a couple of miles from a cinema complex; they tend to have the big screens reserved for popular, up-market films that will be shown in 3D in the larger theatres, and the same film in 2D on smaller screens. I believe that they're permanent. But hey - UK. Huge difference between two sides of an ocean.
I never was a fan of going to the movies since they're usually a ripoff. Last couple times I went: 2 years ago, tickets were four bucks a pop at a theater in some rural town, but it was a fairly crappy theater. Other time was in town, about 12 bucks, but I was in high school then so I wouldn't be surprised if it's much more now.
Hey, I've seem to notice movies are darker when I watch them on the theater and also they look desaturated, but when I look back I see one beam, what could be the problem?
The first day Transformers Dark of the Moon was showing the idiots put in the 2D movie instead of the 3D and 30 minutes into the movie they turn it off and restart the hole movie in 3D but everybody got a Free movie pass so it was kinda worth it.
At one point when I went to see super 8 a guy came, took us out of the theater, and opened with "what's wrong with you". apparently some guy was making noise and when I guy asked him to stop he mouthed off to him.
my friend and I were mistaken for the annoying guy and were told to either leave or sit in the first 3 rows.
Wait, wait... so, is it normal if I go watch a 3D film, look back and realize there is only one beam of light? Or is there supposed to be two beams of light?
My theater uses digital projection from DLP Projectors.
It's actually 15% darker. That is, at 85% brightness.
I seriously think you'd notice if it was at 15% brightness. Try it on your monitors - 100% vs 85% and 100% vs 15% brightness. BIG difference.
Also, since there's only one projector, I'm not sure you'd be able to notice the two beams. It projects at double speed, with alternating polarized pictures. It's still one beam to the naked eye, till you put on glasses.
Lastly, I always go to the films which are properly filmed in 3d. I love them.
@gjsmo Even at 85% brightness, it's not 15% darker. 85% as bright is not the same as 15% darker.
If you have a glass that's 2/3 full, and you drink half of it's contents, it will contain half as much, but not be 50% more empty. It will be 100%, or twice as empty.
Harry Shearer deals with this on his "Le Show" (NPR) program this week... abt 21 min into the hour-long program... the 12 June show... referencing the same Boston Globe article.
That's rather shocking. I'll need to watch out for that. I'm in the UK but don't doubt that something like this could happen here given the right circumstances...
This is Sony's fault for making the projector such a pain in a** to operate and the owners of the theaters for not having the balls to do anything about it.
i watched Hangover 2 last night in the AMC theatres in Canada, and i have to say i thought the quality was how it was supposed to be. Whether its darker then we think, it doesn't bother me!
thanks for letting me know and I have to say I don't enjoy 3d movies I think it distracts you from the movie plus the glasses cost you 3.00 more in my area
Thanks for letting me know about this. We are going to go see PotC 4 this week in 2d and if it is dark, they will hear about it from me. :) thanks Jon.
But why is a 2D movie darker when it gets projectes by a 3D projector? I thought the darkness comes from the glasses and the brightness stays the same?
Actually, I do notice. Dark-projected pictures play havoc with my eyes, and it's a real problem making clear sense of action when it's shown like this for me.
The biggest pain for me, actually, is paying to go see a movie, and I'm subjected to advertising.
Wow, what a coincidence. When I saw Pirates 4 in IMAX 3D on the first day, I noticed that it looked really dark. I didn't see as much detail with the glasses on compared to when I peeked out of the glasses.
Great video Jon! I shared this on fb and twitter.
Dude, Jon. I had no idea that this was happening. If I see somethin' weird going on in my theater, I'll definitely complain. I'm right with you man! I don't want to be ripped off!
If you don't mind I'm going to post this on my game clan forums so they can see it... I'd tweet it but i'm not a big twitter person. I'll post it on company forums too.
wow the roosterteeth drunk cast was also talking about this. so now i guess i should see. and bitch if it looks off.whats worse is that all that cash u pay for a ticket all goes to the movie company and not the theater. the get their money for the sale of food and drink. which is why they don't like it when u sneak shit in. but damn almost $5 for a pop u could get at 7/11 for maybe$2. that pop better have real sugar and cola bean in it
Here in Dubai, The movies are always great, no quality problems or anything, the only problems is the snacks! 3 Dollars for Just a coke! Ridiculous! And also, the price for a movie here is about 9 dollars
The problem is that they don't want to pay for a formation to their employees. They don't want to hire people for higher wages just for that if they can avoid it. That's always the problem. They'd like to do it, but they don't want to pay for it. And that sucks, because you end up paying for it... Either by seeing a crappy image or by paying higher-priced tickets. And then you see their profits, and you just can't believe they bullshit people like that...
Lemme tell you Jon. Our local movie theater was playing The Hangover 2. 15 minutes into the movie the movie significantly got darker and eventually video got cut off entirely. Audio was playing for about 8 minutes until someone went to speak up at the front desk. Then they thought they fixed the problem and then the video cut off again while the audio was still running. Its bullshit. Movie was kinda ruined even though in the end it turned out ok. This should stop. Seriously Im being jipped. :(
@Jon That's only if you assume a measurement of it's intended darkness is equal to that of it's intended brightness.
How can you measure the intended darkness?
Wouldn't it be the difference between absolute brightness and the intended brightness?
15% as bright does not seem to equal 85% darker.
If you have a glass that's 2/3 full, and you drink half of it's contents, it will contain half as much, but not be 50% more empty. It will be 100%, or twice as empty.
i see your piont if it was less then 50% i dont think i would care but 85% darker that is a big number in percentages a moron can tell that is a big number that kinda sucks i usally dont go to the theter that much but when i do i kinda expect to get my $8 worth for the ticket i agree with you jon
im a projectionist and at my theatre the lenses on our doremi digital real d 3d projectors are quite very easy to remove from the actual lense its on a slide bar so when the movie is loading or running black for the first 5 seconds we simply slide it out of the way from the lense
Are the projectors meant to display 2d movies or are they only meant to display 3d? If the latter, then the theaters should have separate areas for 2d and 3d movies. If the projectors are meant to display both, then the lens should be a quick and easy switch. It would probably be easier for all theaters to just have half in 3d and half in 2d or something. This is annoying to me since all I can watch is 2d (can't see 3d since I'm legally blind), but I don't go to theaters much anyway.
i work at a theater so i talked to my manager about this. he said that the lense doesnt make it too dark. he is just being a lazy douche and doesnt feel like taking it off. i hate when they do shit like that
@takeastand94 - Proved my point / this story though -- managers/movie houses *AREN'T* taking the lenses off, even though they *KNOW* it is making the image darker.
Even if it's only 10% darker... the principal of the situation is what bothers me the most.
I wonder why they just don't keep different projectors in different projection areas, and have only 2D movies in one area and the 3D movies in other Areas.
im so glad i live in a town where the guys whos working with the movie theatre machine or wtf its called know what their doing^^ gotta love to live in Hammerfest :)
Absolutely agree with you Jon have even noticed this in Europe, they do the same old tricks! Noticed this immediately, for once i thought this was a broken projector the next time I went to the movies I noticed the dark picture and thought this can't be and saw 2 beams of light heading towards the screen, and since I'm not a video/camera novice I knew what was happening. I complained! Haven't been to the cinemas since but will check on it soon, or else I will complain again! =)
what I think should be done is that in the future, they should build 2 theatres side-by-side, and have one of them be for 2d films and the other for 3D films.
Jon, you just made me day on the thumbnail, saying Movie theater failure. It is my pet peeve when people say fail, when in cases, it needs to be failure.
Wow thats crazy, I will surely watch for that in the future, thanks Thanks Jon!

the cinemas i go to don't have 3d :)
MrJands12345 9 months ago
Thats why Avatar had such a bright, fluorescent, vibrant environment, because of the 85% color reduction.
The1stDirector 9 months ago
85% darker?
So it's 185% as dark as it should be?
How dark is 100% as dark as it should be?
How to you measure something like that?
Do you mean to say that it's 15% as bright as it should be?
Your figures are confusing.
sk8rdman 9 months ago 18
@sk8rdman in fact, all of the things you say are true... and not confusing at all...
Jellyhag02 9 months ago
@sk8rdman - 85% darker. Or only at 15% brightness.
It's not confusing.
Jon 9 months ago 52
@Jon That's only if you assume a measurement of it's intended darkness is equal to that of it's intended brightness.
How can you measure the intended darkness?
Wouldn't it be the difference between absolute brightness and the intended brightness?
15% as bright does not seem to equal 85% darker.
If you have a glass that's 2/3 full, and you drink half of it's contents, it will contain half as much, but not be 50% more empty. It will be 100%, or twice as empty.
sk8rdman 9 months ago
@sk8rdman don't hurt yourself. it makes perfect sense

So you legally see the film, and your still getting f@#ked over by copyright...
Are you kidding me, you know what scrap it, scrap copyright, scrap film and video copyright, they've lost the right to use it.

im a projectionist and at my theatre the lenses on our doremi digital real d 3d projectors are quite very easy to remove from the actual lense its on a slide bar so when the movie is loading or running black for the first 5 seconds we simply slide it out of the way from the lense
gdcardona91 9 months ago
Jon, I would NEVER want to debate you.
I would get so badly wrecked.

This is annoying to me since all I can watch is 2d (can't see 3d since I'm legally blind), but I don't go to theaters much anyway.
lhamil64 9 months ago
that makes so much sense cause when you buy it on dvd it so much brighter
taralee0309 9 months ago
Just bring 3d glasses whenever you go to a 2d movie just in case to save 3 dollars or whatever.
XXNILOKXX 9 months ago
My movie theater shows the 3D and 2D versions in different theaters. So I will keep an eye out, but I think that they avoid that mistake that way.
NamineHikura 9 months ago
@NamineHikura Mine do the same thing. But that's the glory of a 20 screen theater. Smaller theaters can't though.
FBIFriday1 9 months ago
Here, in Sydney, Australia, 3D movies are $23
I'd rather just buy it on dvd and watch it a hundred times
seaweed810 9 months ago
A: in the UK we have totally separate sections for 2d and 3d, which prevents this. Handy...
B: bet the sound guys are happy :)

i work at a theater so i talked to my manager about this. he said that the lense doesnt make it too dark. he is just being a lazy douche and doesnt feel like taking it off. i hate when they do shit like that
takeastand94 9 months ago 5
@takeastand94 - Proved my point / this story though -- managers/movie houses *AREN'T* taking the lenses off, even though they *KNOW* it is making the image darker.
Even if it's only 10% darker... the principal of the situation is what bothers me the most.

i cant even watch 3d movies cause one of my eyes are almost completely blind
suzuki834 9 months ago
@suzuki834 Yeah, it sucks having to wear glasses. >.<
OMIGHTYGUY 9 months ago
I wonder why they just don't keep different projectors in different projection areas, and have only 2D movies in one area and the 3D movies in other Areas.

mirorih2 9 months ago
man i think id notice if i cant even see a thing on the screen
mattymo56 9 months ago
Absolutely agree with you Jon have even noticed this in Europe, they do the same old tricks! Noticed this immediately, for once i thought this was a broken projector the next time I went to the movies I noticed the dark picture and thought this can't be and saw 2 beams of light heading towards the screen, and since I'm not a video/camera novice I knew what was happening. I complained! Haven't been to the cinemas since but will check on it soon, or else I will complain again! =)
talkalotsonius 9 months ago
what I think should be done is that in the future, they should build 2 theatres side-by-side, and have one of them be for 2d films and the other for 3D films.

Jon, you just made me day on the thumbnail, saying Movie theater failure. It is my pet peeve when people say fail, when in cases, it needs to be failure.

My solution is to not go to the movie theatres like I haven't for the past 4 years.
