Listen I don't think this is the place to keep discussing this so I'll give you my final thoughts:
Yes it saved several months of fighting but at the cost of the wost atrocity ever committed. People still suffer from radiation sickness to this day. Generations of children were born malformed and sickly. Even if only a part of these effects were known at the time, it's unconscionable for a free nation to have done such a thing. You could argue it was necessary but personally I don't see it.
Everything is debatable. I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you. But I will say something that affects a single generation vs something that affected at least 6 so far and probably more to come.. I don't know which is worse. I wouldn't want to choose. It's at least on the same level.
If anything remotely positive came from the use of those ruinous weapons (beyond the end of the war, which was inevitable anyway), it's that we won't use them again unless under the most dire of circumstances. Now that we've seen the long-term effects, I mean.

Actually it's been reported since then many times over that the goal was to hit a city so far "untouched" so as to be able to study the effects of the bomb.

As for atomic weapons, no I don't believe their use can be justified ever, let alone on largely civilian targets, let alone by a self-proclaimed fighter for freedom and human rights.

You quoted me and mangled my message. I did not say we joined to help Europe but that WITH the help of European allies we were able to accomplish what might have been impossible otherwise. I'm also implying that with out our AID the outcome could/probably would have been drastically different.

Yeah don't get me wrong I have nothing against Americans in general. In fact I think on the whole America has been a force for "good", the last 8 years notwithstanding.
But this idea of "American exceptionalism", at least in the sense that America is somehow better than the rest of us, gets on my nerves. If anything after 8 years of Bush with all the financial fraud, torture and more, America should be showing some deference, at which thankfully Obama is doing a great job.

The targets were military in nature; Japanese army bases and naval harbors.

Actually it's been reported since then many times over that the goal was to hit a city so far "untouched" so as to be able to study the effects of the bomb.
The firebombings were horrific (and immoral imo) too but you can't compare a bombing campaign that stretches over multiple years with a single attack.
But by far most important is the fact that fire doesn't irradiate. It doesn't destroy the lives of millions of future children. You can try but it's just impossible to justify that.
