@RammatRamzi I remember him for Are friends electric. I get what you mean. I think its coz Cars is featured on things like family guy and other things.
This song is truly truly amazing, my favourite of The Pleasure Principle, this album & Replicas are on my top ten albums of all time absolutly fantastic true genius :D Xx
This is rock-every bit as potent and foundationary as zeppelin, floyd, beatles, sales of albums tells no story, just look at beefheart little commercial success but true genius with many GREAT albums.Gary numan rocks with the best of them-check him out with NIN live in london.WOW!
@kokaiini OH! How right you are! And that final line 'OH NO OH NO, I turned off the pain, like I turned off you all, Now there's only me.' Bone Shattering, visceral pain. Glorious
how fucking cool is it that you can play all the videos in a row non stop = TOTALLY FUCKING COOL, that's how mother fucking cool it is. FUCK YEA...........
The last robot left on earth - (I agree with the posts regarding "Wall E")
Polymoogs - Vox Humana setting. In 1979 this sounded like nothing else in the UK charts. The Key changes and space given at 3.50 - listen to the drum rolls/fills - this is the DNA of hip hop beats. Afrika Bambaataa was listening very closely. if you like this check out "Replicas" and "The Pleasure Principle" Gary Numan and his band were at their creative peak with this sound. Enjoy! Bearhug. Tx
@bloodthurstyprd you know someone's probably going to dislike this now just to spite you, leading to the inevitable "10 people like justin beiber" comments- this is youtube after all.
@skramamme It would be more like "1 Person Doesn't Know Where There Head Is At And Mistakened "Dislike" for "Dis I Like".". We're only Youtube After All. We have to learn to Praise videos like we should. Its good electronic music/Synthpop
Wow, I just heard this song on the radio, first time in.....well, I don't know how long. I'd always wondered why that Basement Jaxx song sounded familiar. Now I know. Doh!
This takes me right back. The first album that I bought was Replicas, when Are Friends Electric was in the charts. I went to see him live, back in the day - including one of his farewell gigs at Wembley Arena.
It's been a guilty secret for over 30 years! Great that he's enjoying a rennaisance.
I think this song is about apathy and indifference, the prevalence of self-centered behavior over social conscience, as a defense mechanism. Gary Numan is clearly a visionary, well ahead of his time.
IMO, this song is about how electronically-reliant we've become. We e-mail, text friends, shop on-line. If I go for a walk, there's no one out...its only me.
the lyrics to this song are possibly the most intense from Numan. I think intense is a good word. anyone who is an introvert will be hit hard with this song.
Synthpop and New Wave have often got a bad rap for being novelty music for the 80s. This song shows that early synth music could be incredibly deep, tragic and beautiful. The Pleasure Principle as a whole is one of the best examples of how New Wave/Synth/Krautrock/Early-Electronic music was so innovative and influential.
My favorite Gary Numan song. It is exactly how I feel. Alone. Abandoned. So many family members, friends, co-workers, lovers. I drift out into space. I talk to the stars!
Oh, shit! What a massive ignoramus I am! I had no idea that Basement Jaxx jacked this song for his "Where's You Head At" track. My respect for Numan's legacy deepens...
I haven't heard this song since the early 1980s, when I played it continuously on my walkman, but listening to the song again in 2010, it holds up quite well and is still one of my favourite songs from the Pleasure Principle.
@RussX5Z Same here, I just learned it today. Plus never looked into it until i heard Jaxx's song and saw Gary Numan in comments, so I had to check it out....lol
I remember when I first downloaded this song. It was the middle of winter 2008 in Micigan and I had just crashed my car. The song really went well with the snow from Michigan winter and the feelings of starvation that went along with Wrestling, and my fridged girlfriend
All Gary Numan fans should go and post comments on all of the "Where's Your Head At" clips and remind them how it ripped off this song. People deserve to know and maybe you'll help someone discover GN for themselves.
GARY NUMAN-an ICON!!!his music makes your darkside visible.pure, dark lyrics with
attitude.every song takes you on a personal trip inside your soul.nr.2 after JOY DIVISION.and he speaks for his own.MINDMUSIC for INTELLIGENT people.you MUST fear your thoughts to survive!!!!you don`t??you LOSE!!
Regarding lordtrousers comment...I don't think this song is about being the last robot on earth. I think, as with most of Numans songs, his message here comes from a serriously itroverted point of view. Just as in Complex, Me I disconnect from you, and This Wreckage. I love Numan's early stuff... mostly because I can fully relate. Great music! Long Live The 80's!!!
@chandrob Well if you remember Numan is an Aspergers sufferer, I think that the fact he finds it difficult to grasp the social graces translates into his songs and it's probably where this idea of a robot comes from a Robot unable to grasp human interaction. You'll also have to remember that he liked to put several meanings into songs so Loudtrousers may be right as well. I suppose in the end it's what the song means to you.
Still a timeless classic to this day. Everytime I hear this song, it don't matter how old it has become it still sounds like it's brand new, out of this world.
We ,me and friends used to bust up when we first heard the line 'Me i eat dust' funny yet sad, the android thinks he's 'people' he's more human than most.
And M.E. I eat dust We're all so run down I'd call it my death But I'll only fade away And I hate to fade alone Now there's only M.E. We were so sure We were so wrong Now it's over But there's no one left to see And there's no one left to die There's only M.E.
See how sad these lyrics are but it makes you think and smile hearing the great music within? Shame that his newer music is no where near as good compared to this with all the depressing crap he writes.
Depressing, perhaps, although I never found it to be so, dark and moody maybe. As for it being crap. Well again, no quite frankly, perhaps not as good as his very early stuff in general, but there have been several standout tracks in recent years that are as good as anything he's ever done.
I lvoe this and live is the best version! I remember back in 81 I saw this and he played this live, first he did Airlane and then ME as he ussually does, 5/5 great show!
It's not included in the lyrics, just like the outro to Moral where he starts talking about something...They should have included this stuff in the full lyrics.
