  • Eargasms!

  • This beats Cars, yet, he's remembered for Cars.

  • @RammatRamzi I remember him for Are friends electric. I get what you mean. I think its coz Cars is featured on things like family guy and other things.

  • @jewsarenotcool

Numan did a lot of stuff better than Cars, yet, it was Cars that people seem to gravitate toward in America.

  • This song is truly truly amazing, my favourite of The Pleasure Principle, this album & Replicas are on my top ten albums of all time absolutly fantastic true genius :D Xx

  • This is rock-every bit as potent and foundationary as zeppelin, floyd, beatles, sales of albums tells no story, just look at beefheart little commercial success but true genius with many GREAT albums.Gary numan rocks with the best of them-check him out with NIN live in london.WOW!

  • Incredible song.. the final part from 3:39 is just...there is not a word known to mankind to describe it..

  • @kokaiini OH! How right you are! And that final line 'OH NO OH NO, I turned off the pain, like I turned off you all, Now there's only me.' Bone Shattering, visceral pain. Glorious

  • The last robot left on earth - (I agree with the posts regarding "Wall E")

Polymoogs - Vox Humana setting. In 1979 this sounded like nothing else in the UK charts. The Key changes and space given at 3.50 - listen to the drum rolls/fills - this is the DNA of hip hop beats. Afrika Bambaataa was listening very closely. if you like this check out "Replicas" and "The Pleasure Principle" Gary Numan and his band were at their creative peak with this sound. Enjoy! Bearhug. Tx

  • The backing band made him I was there I saw the reality god bless paul...cedric and the lads

  • At the start I was waiting to hear "Wheres your head at?!"

  • LMFAO some people thankful there is no dislikes on a video, does it really matter?

Remember when Youtube used to have stars?

Like wow, a few dislikes on a video is going to change your opinion about a fucking song. Grow up.

  • Does anyone else believe that the Wall E movie was possibly a movie of this song?

    This song fits it perfectly.

  • @CocaineMusic1984 Agreed.

  • @CocaineMusic1984 Yes, It was noticeable right from the promos, They should have used the song.

  • thank god no one dislikes this. As it is a brilliant song and no one can make an overused comment about how a certain amount of people have no taste.

  • @bloodthurstyprd you know someone's probably going to dislike this now just to spite you, leading to the inevitable "10 people like justin beiber" comments- this is youtube after all.

  • @skramamme It would be more like "1 Person Doesn't Know Where There Head Is At And Mistakened "Dislike" for "Dis I Like".". We're only Youtube After All. We have to learn to Praise videos like we should. Its good electronic music/Synthpop

  • The strings in this song are beautiful.

  • only KILLERS NO fillers!!!!

  • I think the movie Wall E was totally inspired by this song.

  • What a fucking MUSICAL PIONEER and GENIUS!!!... Hail to the #1 SYNTH-MASTER of the UNIVERSE!!!...

  • Wow, I just heard this song on the radio, first time in.....well, I don't know how long. I'd always wondered why that Basement Jaxx song sounded familiar. Now I know. Doh!

This takes me right back. The first album that I bought was Replicas, when Are Friends Electric was in the charts. I went to see him live, back in the day - including one of his farewell gigs at Wembley Arena.

It's been a guilty secret for over 30 years! Great that he's enjoying a rennaisance.

  • I think this song is about apathy and indifference, the prevalence of self-centered behavior over social conscience, as a defense mechanism. Gary Numan is clearly a visionary, well ahead of his time.

  • Have listened to this song since '79, still want to x.

  • fuck the Basement Jaxx' stupid pointless song...It annoyed the fuck out of me

  • fucking amazing

  • IMO, this song is about how electronically-reliant we've become. We e-mail, text friends, shop on-line. If I go for a walk, there's no one out...its only me.

  • I've loved Gary Numan from the first time I heard Cars and bought the cassette tape. Ya I'm old. Ha Ha. But I love It !!!! Numan owns!

  • Kicks the shit out of the Basement Jaxx version. Pardon my language.

  • @MiaoPurrington That's because it's the original and actually good.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome stuff

  • the lyrics to this song are possibly the most intense from Numan. I think intense is a good word. anyone who is an introvert will be hit hard with this song.

  • @JohnMalmborg this song is about robots.

  • @vitis1 well, one robot.

  • @vitis1 exactly. just one lone character. you can take something literally AND read between the lines at the same time, ya know.

  • Synthpop and New Wave have often got a bad rap for being novelty music for the 80s. This song shows that early synth music could be incredibly deep, tragic and beautiful. The Pleasure Principle as a whole is one of the best examples of how New Wave/Synth/Krautrock/Early-Electronic music was so innovative and influential.

  • If I was the last robot on earth, I would sing this song!

  • @ACEDIMEMUSTAINE yeah its a wicked song just love it !!

  • This song makes me think about how much winter sucks.

  • My name is M.E.

    But he's saying "me"

    I feel cheated.

  • when I look at that cover, I think that Gary is not amused by pyramids.

  • @JunkyardKid lmao You made me spill soda but it was worth it!

  • @JunkyardKid LOL - maybe it's his kryponite?

  • Thanks Gary Numan.

  • This song is so awesome and unique that Basement Jaxx sampled it for "Where's Your Head At?" and made a big hit with it.

  • i like hes voice :)

  • People...where's your head at? This is truly a classic, it deserves a lot more views!

  • @Sawlake pun much?

  • @Sawlake i totally agree...actually,it wasn't until a few days ago i realized that Basement Jaxx has used this song as a sample on their own song....

  • Gary Numan,BRO!

  • Gary doesn't seem to trust that glowing pyramid.

  • PUSHING....THE LIMITS...OF ROCK AND ROLL...GARY NUMAN'S MUSIC...IS BOTH ROCK AND ART...

  • @divisionmagus It's much better than rock. It's New Wave. :D

  • Wahnsinns Song , echt G.N. ein Meister seines Fachs !!!

  • "Where's your head at!". Lol. Who did that song? It sampled this one I believe.

  • @shelly10538 Basement Jaxx dumb ass!

  • My favorite Gary Numan song. It is exactly how I feel. Alone. Abandoned. So many family members, friends, co-workers, lovers. I drift out into space. I talk to the stars!

  • @GPWS339

I felt that way when I was 13 too

  • @GPWS339 yeah....i know that kind of feelings

  • brilliant. soooo fucking brilliant.

  • SOOOO AHEAD OF ITS TIME....

  • Oh, shit! What a massive ignoramus I am! I had no idea that Basement Jaxx jacked this song for his "Where's You Head At" track. My respect for Numan's legacy deepens...

  • Jaxx sucks!!!!

  • Excellent excellent excellent..well....'cos it is.

  • I haven't heard this song since the early 1980s, when I played it continuously on my walkman, but listening to the song again in 2010, it holds up quite well and is still one of my favourite songs from the Pleasure Principle.

  • Man am I tripping G.N. has some great music.

All this time I thought he was stuck in cars.

  • @skyehoyt1971 It's true honey, you WERE trippin. Are you from the US?

  • Just how far Gary was ahead of his time can never be ascertained. But I truly believe he should be knighted! Arise Sir Gary!!!!

A campaign should begin to achieve this. Lobby the powers that be and make it happen!!!

  • @harbecca Would he even take up a knighthood? Is he even a royalist?

  • yes!

  • I didn't know Basement Jaxx ripped it off from this song and artist! I was shocked when I heard this.

  • @RussX5Z Same for me

  • @RussX5Z Same here, I just learned it today. Plus never looked into it until i heard Jaxx's song and saw Gary Numan in comments, so I had to check it out....lol

  • @RussX5Z Amazing sound for the tech at the time

  • And M.E. I eat dust...

  • Got the original vinyl the other day. This album is just amazing!

  • @DimensionsofChange were you searching up songs to download while driving the car? this is important

  • I always knew the new version of this song, but I never knew this one was originally done by Gary Numan! Cooleo! XD

  • I think this might be the earliest case of running distortion through a flanger to get that late delay distorted cracking sound.

  • I just saw him live here in Denver last Thursday. It was awesome!

  • I just saw him perform this in NYC last week. AMAZING. He is so powerful live. Now this song is in my head. One of his best

  • gary, can i have your autograph?

  • Basement Jaxx? fuck off, this Guy is where it all started,u need Numan in your Life.:)

  • noel fielding got me listening to gary numan lol

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER

  • @LIVEEVILINC IT REALLY IS.

  • Every time I find a new gary song like this I just play the shit out of it till I find another I like

  • @NuggetBlubber That is so much like me. Hahaha. His genius songs are neverending also.

  • @Beatmyguest001 yah hes my favorite

  • he is paramount! im in love!

  • if we is avin a synth night ill ave this one with me chips!

  • @nathansomers Great accent. :-)

  • Perfection

  • I remember when I first downloaded this song. It was the middle of winter 2008 in Micigan and I had just crashed my car. The song really went well with the snow from Michigan winter and the feelings of starvation that went along with Wrestling, and my fridged girlfriend

  • cool always loved this one !

  • All Gary Numan fans should go and post comments on all of the "Where's Your Head At" clips and remind them how it ripped off this song. People deserve to know and maybe you'll help someone discover GN for themselves.

  • @RSVPBlogger i didnt realize gary numan i never realized but you are a genius

  • and me i eat dust

  • @stanleymurray we're all so run down i'd call it my death but i'd only fade away and i hate to fade alone now theres only meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!

  • fascinante composición. Es genial como se eleva por el teclado desde el 1':36"

  • HEEEEEEEY!!!!!!Basement Jaxx sampled this song I wonderes where they got that beat.

  • @TheVikaDoll Is it "Where's Your Head At"?

  • the Pleasure Principle. Gary sure got it right.

  • MGMT has a lot of inspiration of Gary Numan, especially the vocal style

  • AWESOME

  • Bought the album in dont know when, awesome upload,i need to get out more

  • Regarding lordtrousers comment...I don't think this song is about being the last robot on earth. I think, as with most of Numans songs, his message here comes from a serriously itroverted point of view. Just as in Complex, Me I disconnect from you, and This Wreckage. I love Numan's early stuff... mostly because I can fully relate. Great music! Long Live The 80's!!!

  • @chandrob Well if you remember Numan is an Aspergers sufferer, I think that the fact he finds it difficult to grasp the social graces translates into his songs and it's probably where this idea of a robot comes from a Robot unable to grasp human interaction. You'll also have to remember that he liked to put several meanings into songs so Loudtrousers may be right as well. I suppose in the end it's what the song means to you.

  • great album ,was at his first tour ,great night, ohh the memories

  • THIS . . . . . THIS . . . . is a perfect album!

  • how sweet it is

  • 3:12 The drum roll makes it sound very modern...bravo Gary (-_-)

  • F*** basement jaxx..this is a classic

  • I remember when i was a robot we used to play this at robot gigs - this song is about the last robot left on earth - that was me

  • So scary, so true...

  • wow, Gary has many good ones!

  • damn it basement jaxx

  • @gewmonster why? i like where's your head at?, it's a classic

  • Still a timeless classic to this day. Everytime I hear this song, it don't matter how old it has become it still sounds like it's brand new, out of this world.

  • always loved this track.

  • We ,me and friends used to bust up when we first heard the line 'Me i eat dust' funny yet sad, the android thinks he's 'people' he's more human than most.

  • This was sampled on Where's your head At by Basement Jaxx

  • This is bugging me. There's a popular song that sampled the beginning part from :09 to :12

    HEEEELP ME

  • Where's your head at?

  • no, Gary numan 1979, ; - )

  • the song that sampled it was "where's your head at" or something lke that?

  • actually the last minutes of the song reminds me to the extention that NIN put in the Metal cover they did years ago.

  • Well NIN's cover of Metal was supposed to be a blend with Remember I Was Vapour and M.E. with it. That's why it's so long.

  • @Jobana thats becasue its the same synth line, they also used the piano from Remember I Was Vapour.

  • Basement Jaxx used this song as a sample for the track "Where's Your Head At". Check it out.

  • i'm pretty sure everyone who knows this Gary Numan song knows that Basement Jaxx did a remix with the riff. Not the other way around though :(

  • It's true. Wall-E was based off this song. Pretty much used this song as the concept of the film.

  • Always believed Wall-E was a spinoff of ME.

  • @TillDeathDoUsApart83 No way?!! Someone at Disney or Pixar listens to GARY NUMAN?? ......THIS Gary Numan?!

  • @jrmetmoi mate it isn't that surprising, what's surprising is that someone at disney likes devo, now THAT'S bizarre

  • i agree ... i wish that they could've used this song in "wall-e"

  • The movie Wall.E is very similar to this, very similar.

  • yep, and I think Wall-E was based on this song, or they got their idea from it.

  • And M.E. I eat dust We're all so run down I'd call it my death But I'll only fade away And I hate to fade alone Now there's only M.E. We were so sure We were so wrong Now it's over But there's no one left to see And there's no one left to die There's only M.E.
  • Why should I care

    Why should I try

    Oh no, oh no

    I turned off the pain

Like I turned off you all

    Now there's only M.E.

  • Love this song so much. The 'new' version that was on Hybrid is horrible.

  • @Cleooo1981 I totally agree.

  • classic!!!!!!!! thank you for posting it

  • See how sad these lyrics are but it makes you think and smile hearing the great music within? Shame that his newer music is no where near as good compared to this with all the depressing crap he writes.

  • Depressing, perhaps, although I never found it to be so, dark and moody maybe. As for it being crap. Well again, no quite frankly, perhaps not as good as his very early stuff in general, but there have been several standout tracks in recent years that are as good as anything he's ever done.

  • I lvoe this and live is the best version! I remember back in 81 I saw this and he played this live, first he did Airlane and then ME as he ussually does, 5/5 great show!

  • does anyone know what is said just into the instrumental part? around about 1:38?

  • It's not included in the lyrics, just like the outro to Moral where he starts talking about something...They should have included this stuff in the full lyrics.

  • it's just talking I think.

  • This is one of the best songs he had on that album, the lyrics are really touchy.

  • This is one sad song, you can really feel the emotion in it.
