According to Lee's autobiography, when Ponting went over to Papps he had no memory of being hit - he'd thought Lee had pulled out at the last moment and there was still a ball to come. That's how hard it hit him and why he had to retire hurt - another blow could have been seriously dangerous. I feel for him, even as an opponent you never like to see injury on a sporting field.
I think if I was in Michael Papps position, the best reaction would be to go up to Brett Lee and casually smash him square in the face with the bat.Teach the fucken arrogant Aussie cunt a thing or 2 about the spirit of the game
Oh my goodness, it looked like as if Chris Martin is batting....Brett Lee absolutely thrashed Michael Papps with his pure fast and lethal bowling...Papps should play at domestic level rather than international cricket..
dammit i trie SO many times to hit guys in the head with my bouncers, just wasnt good enough hehe. That said, tough young man is Papps but really, not well played at all, a bit 'too' brave coming forward so far.
@Catatofish He would've been carted off to hospital. To give him credit he didn't flinch or fall down in a heap. Though that first one he ducked into.
A lot of bats look to come forward to the quicker bowlers rather than back so that they are already in position to drive the loose ones. Although it puts them in a rather vulnerable position, it's a risk they are willing to take seeing as they are really only going to get one short ball an over and thus they would rather be waiting on the front stool for the fuller ones than on the back for the short one, that's if they even get one...
Against this type of pace, your first movement really has to be back. On both the bouncers, his trigger movement is to step on the front foot, and at that pace that ball is too quick to allow you time to make adjustments, that's why he got pinged.
He hasn't played international cricket since this game.
@Mladenovski28 Agree. Pretty odd that his last foot movement before the ball hits him is a big step forward, crazy batting, he isnt Viv Richards, even if Lee bowled a yorker he was odd on to be plumb LBW, really shouldve been going back. Poor bugger.
@robelinda2 Poor bugger indeed. It turns out that Brett Lee ended his career. That has to leave some mental scars. But really with helmets these days he should not have had that big a bump on his head, the next thing to be revolutionised in cricket has to be the helmets.
@Mladenovski28 Actually, thats not entirely true. He hasn't played ODI cricket since then...but he did get selected to go on tour to South Africa in 2007 as an opener. Didn't do very well there either...got done in by a few short pitched deliveries from Steyn and Ntini in the two Tests.
@Mladenovski28 hmm i agree with you in some aspects but as a short opening batsmen myself i find that if you're first movement is back even slightly and you get a full pitched ball it makes it very difficult to adjust and can lead to sniking and LBW often. Although i have never faced pace like this so i guess i wouldnt know for sure, just my observation anyway :)

If that was me on the receiving end, I'll run up the pitch and punch the shit out of the bowler.

Although this was the last match he ever played, he averaged over 50 in ODIs during his brief time in international cricket.
